I hope there a possibility of 3rd party PCI Express version so users can retro fit them into mac pro ? Be nice for their 'pro' pro machines can garner some new firepower too.

I do think this is fake sorta. I mean I can see it happening.. but what about that adaptor (that looked like USB)... this is completely different. So idk what to think now.

this was supposed to be the lightpeak connector!
  • physically compatible with USB-Ports, so save port-space!
apple-Light-Peak.jpg

now what? How are we gonna get access to fast standard Harddrive enclosures - most don't have Firewire and Apple gives us no eSATA, no USB3. Do they really think that those manufacturers will implement yet another physical port? With a USB-compatible jack they might have but like this? Never!

Plus, Apple could have offered us TWO LightPeak ports + 2 USBx Ports with no extra space!

I won't believe this until it's out - and then I'll shake my head hard!

I fully agree! What happened to USB3 compatible LightPeak? At least with USB3 compatibility these ports would have seen real use but now they are there just costing money and eating space without any real use.

So true.

Also, this could become another Apple mediocrity like FireWire. Who still uses FireWire? If I didn't have an ancient iSight plugged in, I'd have NO reason for FW, ever. It's been an antiquity for 3 years now.

So wrong. I have an external FW800 drive for my MBP. It blows the doors off USB2. If you think USB2 is a sufficient replacement for FW800 (or even FW400 for that matter) then you either don't need even moderately fast external drives, or you just don't know a lot about FireWire.

The only reason I don't use FW800 for all my drives is because it's getting harder and harder to find peripherals that support it.

Look at the pictures in the earlier post that shows all the ports on the side of the new MBP. It looks like the jack is not as tall as the USB port next to it.

Are we looking at the same earlier post picture because to my eyes it DOES look just about as thick (tall) as the standard USB ports next to it?

It does look a lot less wide than those USB ports- maybe 40% as wide, but we still end up with a relatively square port almost as tall as it is wide. My guess would have been for a port design aiming for the thickness of the ports on iDevices or SD media card slots. I expected something to compete with mini-USB or micro, so that it had the potential to be integrated into all peripherals including cameras, iDevices, etc without having to mix and match ends (other form factors) on the cables. Instead, if this is it, we're probably look at at least one ALT form factor for the other end of the cable (or worse, probably several).

100% Fake. You have all been fooled.

Personally, I'm hoping for that. I was looking to get the low end model of the 13" with some upgraded internal hardware but if this is what they will be like I'm not really looking forward to it.

Can't wait for the damn release tomorrow so we can actually figure out if this is BS or not.

Why does something of so much importance have a terribly lit and heavily grainy photo? Take a decent picture.

I do - for external hard disc ( FW800 ) - though there aren't other any viable options -
* USB 2 isn't an option because its far too slow.
* Apple won't add USB3
* Apple won't add SATA either

There are plenty of USB3 hard disks and they are fairly cheap too.. a shame, we can't use them.

That's the picture-- SlashGear had the same pic but a bit bigger and it clearly is shorter than the USB port (not much, but shorter). But, I agree with you, I would expect a new connector in this day and age to be more micro-USB sized than normal-USB sized.

1440x900. The new MacBook Air has it. 1280x800 is a low res for a 13" MacBook Pro in 2011. Besides, what about all the rumors (rumors, I know, but still).

I agree the resolution should have been higher, but I wouldn't call the pics fake because of it. (1440x900 would be great)

At first glance 'Thunderbolt' sounds stupid, but once you think about it, it's not any dumber than 'Firewire.'

And we all got used to that pretty fast.

So, eh...I'm already over it.

It makes sense for it to have poor quality if it is a legit leaked photo. The only way to get one, really, would be to work for a store that has had them shipped already. Thus, a worker would be leaking the photos. How many people do you know bring a full DSLR to their job? Chances are it ould be a small, ****** camera or, even worse, a cell phone camera.

There's something called a flash. My iPhone can take a better picture.

first im happy that firewire800 is still there and i know many people who are still using it...

i dont get why its important which connector is on the harddrive. a manufacturer who is implimenting lightpeak to his accessories can put it in any port as long their is a cable to apple's thunderbolt/mini display connector... or am i wrong?

Fake. Really hoping the name is fake too, Thunderbolt doesn't make sense, sound is slow, light is fast.

Not everyone has an iPhone though. If I'm right and this is a cell phone picture then the quality makes sense. Not everyone has a brand new smartphone with a good camera in it. My cell phone would likely take a picture even worse than this.

Also, it's a zoomed in version of the original photo which is bound to ruin quality.
