Closeup Photos Show Clear Difference in Thickness Between iPhone 5 and 4S

I'm curious on how many new customers have the 4S compared to the 3GS and 4 as this may impact this years sales due to 2-year contracts in North America and any other nation which has contracts. It seemed the 4S had the most sales of any iPhone launch to date (especially given new launches in countries that didn't have iPhone's).

Interesting question. I got my 4S on release day last year. According to my AT&T account online, I'm already eligible for a full subsidy upgrade. So, upgrade I shall.

I don't notice the thickness THAT much, it still looks as "fat". So many on here say that it looks like the iPhone 4. The only thing that's the same is the sides where you press the buttons.

I'm curious as this may [negatively] impact sales as customers will either wait for next years model or [some may] pay the full price for an off contract device. Either way, I can't imagine the "5" surpassing the 4S in global sales. Any one have exact figures? Thanks!

Looks at least possible for the 5 to be the biggest seller if history is any indication...

Of course, we never know exactly how many of each iPhone model has sold.

Is it just me or does the speaker grill seem a bit out of place for Apple. Five holes on one side and eight on the other, it would look much cleaner if they just did five on each.

There's nothing wrong with a little asymmetry (although most people are wired to accept symmetry over asymmetry). The camera and earpeice weren't symmetrical before. And its on the bottom so who's really gonna pay attention to it once in hand?

Double the security, double the leaks. For the first time in many years, I might actually skip the keynote, lest I become bored.

This just in.... Apple has cancelled the September 12th event and has told the media to simply refer to the images on the rumor sites and keep an eye on their online store on September 12th for pre-orders opening up.

Am I the only one who wants a more rounded or tapered designed iPhone now? The slab design of the 4 and 4S are great but I want a change.

Also, is this the design Jobs worked closely on?

Sigh, I wish they had gone with a more radical redesign. The 4th generation chassis was my least favorite iteration of the iPhone and this feels like more of the same. Is this really the best Johnny can do or is Tim too afraid of killing the sacred cow?

I would suspect the average consumer waits at least two years. I skipped the 4S despite being able to upgrade on day 1 from my iPhone 4. I suspect sales will still be higher than the 4S.

Same. Feel like the iPhone 5 has been out for months now with all the leaks. I went through shock and minor disgust at the new design.... had time to get accustomed to it... grew to really like it... now already have became bored with it. Apple doesn't need an event this year. Just tell everyone when it goes on sale and put it on the website.

Yawwwwwn

The more recessed screen and unibody design should add quite a bit of strength and rigidity.

Looks good as well.

Just wait until they show the video with Ive talking about the design and manufacturing process as they show iPhone bodies being machined out of solid blocks of aluminum. Then all of a sudden the opinion will shift back toward "cool".

Apple is on a path of incremental innovation. It is very difficult to jump from one design to the next, especially when they haven't learned everything they could from the current design. My guess is that after "5s" they will have exhausted just about everything they can do with this form factor and then try something new with new technologies in 2014 on "iPhone 6" (liquid metal?).

I can guarantee you that those efforts are already under way. Perhaps the wider design that was rumored/leaked before the 4s unveiling last year is the prototype for the 2014 model.

Either way, I think people need to stop clamoring for a redesign and realize that this is a redesign. It may look similar, but going from the previous design to unibody is not a small change.

Dont get the Bottom , the feeling just looks not right but as they say it grows into you!!;)

I don't even think most are arguing that the design isn't different enough... I think it's more that this design leaked MONTHS ago in almost its full form. Everyone's already gotten used to the new design and it's lost the little bit of "wow" it would have had if it didn't leak so early. Just MHO

It's thin enough. Give me a bigger battery. Motorola's Droid Razr Maxx HD (yes, that's the name) gets 2x the usage as the iPhone. Who remembers when the iPhone's battery was the envy of other smartphones?

Unless, of course, we've all been unknowingly looking at the next iPod Touch.

DUN, DUN DUUUUNNNNNNNN...:apple:

Yeah! Next blog entry: side to side leaked picture shows smaller connector in new iphone! wOW!

Sorry for the spoiler...

...reports have pegged the iPhone 5 thickness at 7.6 mm, 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S at 9.3 mm.

But iPhone users will across the globe will bury this slim device in a otterbox case and make it thicker than a 3G!
:D

How incredibly true. For the life of me I cannot understand how people continue to put their iPhones in cases that make them look like bricks...oh well, mine looks perfectly fine in the nude.

haha yeah part of me realllllly hopes this is Apple trolling all of us with intentionally "leaked" faux-iphone parts. THAT would be pretty funny.

meh. Not impressed by the appearance. Maybe the internals will wow me away from my iP4. 10 mega pixels, 1Gb RAM, etc. etc.

I like continual refinement (iP4 to iP4S) and the pursuit of strength (unibody, recessed glass) but appearance is not enough to jump on this thing as an upgrade. What I do want is an actual deal on an iP4S. People charge way to much for their used phones IMO.
