Putting it at the bottom makes it consistent with the iPod touch. I would argue it also makes more sense since the headphone jack can force you to orient your device in such a way that double clicking the home button to access music controls isn't easy. For example, the headphones are in while your phone is in your pocket. You have to pull the entire device out to change songs, whereas you could expose only the bottom quarter of the screen from your pocket if the jack was on the bottom.

It also makes it less awkward when you have the USB cable and headphone jack in and they're not on competing sides.

Another thing: When you're talking and it's raining, water is less likely to fall in the speaker hole. I'm not sure if this was ever an issue, but it's something I think about when I'm walking the dog and talking when it's misting or raining lightly. I'm sure it's more about maximizing space than anything, but that would be a benefit.

Can't take it anymore

For ***** sake Macrumors!!! Does anyone care about these leaks anymore? It's the same crap on every site. We know what it's going to look like already. The iphone has leaked!!! Ok we get it. Macrumors--Please stop comparing leaked iphone video/pic/specs/etc. WE GET IT!! same ****, taller phone. Can I get a amen from someone?

Why don't they make the aluminium go the whole thickness of the device, and the glass would slip inside a tiny bead?

That would look neater and a smoother one piece look that the glass slapped on the top, in an "external" looking manner

I've wondered the same. The reality is that it probably goes against their "use as few parts as possible" design goals.

In that scenario, you'd have to manufacture a separate "cap" piece that would snap over top of the glass onto the unibody sides. In doing so, you'd probably create a weak point where that top cap could come loose with regular use. My wife's Droid had such a design and the cap would pop off regularly until it finally weakened to the point that it would no longer stay attached at all.

Ultimately, I think Apple places a high value on the aesthetic design of having the front of the device be purely a flat piece of glass.

I said it before and I'll say it again...I really hope that Apple is playing everyone here by intentionally leaking fake parts out, and they'll actually reveal a new iPhone next week that looks different than this. I'm good with the taller, but not wider, screen. But I'd like to see an iPod Touch (and original iPhone) styled curved back. I also don't see why the phone needs to be so much longer to accommodate the longer screen. It seems to me that they could give us a longer screen in the same length body (or close to it) by eliminating some of that "dead space" above/below the screen (possibly necessitating a non-round Home button).

Another advantage is when you reach into your pocket to remove it (hand pointing down, phone upside-down in pocket with headphone jack facing up), and then move it to your face to use it (hand pointing up, phone right-side up), you do not have to reorient the phone.

Yes, it's also easier to plug in headphones looking at the bottom of the device when it is on a flat surface oriented up, rather than reaching to the top to do it so it isn't a blind plug-in.

I don't really know of any advantage of the port being on the top.

meh. Not impressed by the appearance. Maybe the internals will wow me away from my iP4. 10 mega pixels [...]

I really hope not. More megapixels would just bring more noise. Let's hope for a larger sensor and for a lens with a wider aperture (iPhone 4s has a f2.4 aperture). That will bring huge improvements to your photos, more megapixels will not

Having the speaker grills machined out of the aluminum rather than having the mesh is so much better, both in looks and in design.

I know the asymmetry will bother some, but I like the move to this unibody chasis. As much as people are whining about how it doesn't look all that different, the processes involved to manufacture this device are obviously much improved/advanced than before.

Two easy steps.

1. Make the holes symmetric

2. Make the holes smaller. jesus christ this looks like it's a recycled Mac Pro. It just looks dated...theyve shown it with the unibody macbook pro that they can make the holes much smaller.

Overall I am really underwhelmed by this design. THIS is what they come up with after 2 whole years of designing it? a slightly refined iphone 4 design?

That, to me, is the biggest advantage. I walk with my phone in a pocket a lot and having it "Right side up" is a pain when getting in & out of pockets.

Fair points, but I've yet to see anyone else manufacture a better industrial design. Some of the Lumia phones are close, but it isn't as easy as people make it out to be to just throw away everything you know and start over so that people can say that they bought a phone that looks different.

How many years have the Mac Pros looked the same? MacBook Pros? iPods?

This incremental behavior is not new at Apple.

Why would they make the holes symmetric? That would be stupid. The microphone only needs to be so big. The extra holes belong to the speaker, which will hopefully improve sound quality drastically. As the sound quality from the speaker on the iPhone 4/4s is terrible.

Design for the sake of change does not create good design.

No amen from me. This is what this site is about. Why do you even come here around a time when you should know dam well this will be happening. Seems like you are getting yourself worked up about something silly, but hey , its your heart attack.

I liked it better at the top for only one reason: When I'm using it and listening to music at the same time.
L-Headphones/Earphones will be a nuisance if this happens to be the design, but I guess I'll get used to it.

What carrier are you on? I'm looking to sell my (AT&T)4S it's in perfect condition. willing to go under "market price"

I'm on AT&T for now but will carrier unlock any 4S upgrade before moving to Europe early next year. All GSM iphones are unlockable regardless of contract with 3rd party "insider" services. I'll PM you an offer.

I don't feel right upgrading from a 4S to get something just a little bit thinner and a taller screen. LTE might be enough but I can survive without it.

Post the new iMac leaked photos...

When in a dock, when in a shirt pocket, when in a pocket (unless your motor skills are challenged), when in a car dock, when it's next to you in a seat etc etc etc. Now You have to remove the headphones every time you do something else... that's some real cleaver design there Apple

It looks like a iphone, with a chinese android-phone-like-design around it, not made by apple.

Same. Feel like the iPhone 5 has been out for months now with all the leaks. I went through shock and minor disgust at the new design.... had time to get accustomed to it... grew to really like it... now already have became bored with it. Apple doesn't need an event this year. Just tell everyone when it goes on sale and put it on the website.

Yawwwwwn

Agreed.

Half of me is hoping that Apple is REALLY ********* with us and Tim Cook pulls out something "different". :apple:

The other half says these leaks are legit and I'm in for a real letdown on 9/12.

If this is in fact the iPhone 5, it is a more refined product. It's seems like a natural evolutionary development from previous versions. It's new enough to keep current iPhone owners interest peaked, but also not a drastic departure from their candy-bar format to loose their already establish product identity within the marketplace.
Innovation without refinement results in a schizophrenic product line. Multiple directions. No focus.
Apples approach to refinement reminds of the body style changes BMW makes for their vehicles. Subtle, but new and fresh.

Maybe it's just me, but over the last few days, in the latest leaks I've noticed that the black version of the iPhone 5 has lost that blue-ish gunmetal band. It looks more like the iPhone 4S, with the shinny silver. Is it possible that the people building these mockups are using parts from the White model and just mixing them up?

I gotta be honest, I like the black with the gunmetal look much more than the silver.

Anyone else?

I agree with the original post. I find it hard to believe that Jony Ive would have allowed it to be designed that way. It just looks "off." Nothing eye-pleasing about it.

I get what you're saying, but make the holes the same. Apple is known for eye-pleasing designs, and the bottom of that phone ain't it.
