TechCrunch reports that Apple may be departing from its usual pattern of releasing major new iOS releases alongside new iPhone hardware in the June-July timeframe, instead pushing iOS 5 to a release in the fall, potentially with an initial unveiling at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference. Many people (including myself) were a bit disappointed that Apple didn't devote any time during the iPad 2 unveiling to talking about iOS 5, the next major revamp of the software. But there may be a very good reason for that: it's not coming anytime soon. In fact, the plan right now is to wait to launch iOS 5 until the fall, we've heard from two solid sources. With the later timeframe for the iOS launch and Apple potentially waiting until WWDC to offer the first glimpse at it, the company would presumably forgo its usual April media event where it has traditionally introduced developers to the major updates to give them time to update their apps for the public launch a few months later. One report from earlier this month had claimed that Apple would be holding such an event in early April, but TechCrunch indicates that this is unlikely to take place.

According to the sources for the report, iOS 5 will be a major update implementing the long-rumored cloud-based hosting for music, videos, and photos, as well as some new services such as location-based offerings. The fall release would reportedly also coincide with the release of a third-generation iPad.

The report offers no specific information on the fate of an iPhone update and whether that could also be pushed back to the fall timeframe, but the presumption is that Apple will follow its usual schedule with a fifth-generation iPhone release in June or July, but shipping with a version of iOS 4 ahead of the iOS 5 release a few months later.

I hope I can upgrade as soon as the iPhone 5 is released. This 3GS is getting old.

Perhaps in the same way that Apple previously pulled OSX software engineers to help polish iOS, they're now focusing on getting Lion out the door?

Either that or a decent notification solution is still eluding them :p

As long as we get the first beta some time in April, I couldn't care less about the Fall release. :D

As long as they show it and preview it, I'm okay with waiting. Especially if it's a redesign

Problem I have is timing. Why does Apple continue to release the new iPhone / iPad yet we have to wait months afterwards for the iOS update to take advantage of them? Last year it took until November for the original iPad update. Now they're going to offer the iPhone 5 with a several month lag for the iOS 5 upgrade?

If they were to actually do it this way this year it would be the first time they ever did it that way. Every prior iPhone came with a new iOS

    iPhone - iOS 1
    iPhone 3G - iOS 2
    iPhone 3Gs - iOS 3
    iPhone 4 - iOS 4

I feel like the iPhone 5 coasting in on iOS 4.x would imply a smaller upgrade. Otherwise a mega update to .x that could just as well be called iOS 5. (which seems less likely) Or this rumor is bunk.

I'm under contract anyway, so what do I care. ;)

My thoughts exactly. Our school district (ISD 482) just bought 1,465 iPads for its students, and I can see us getting really mad if Apple were to release a new iPad 6 mos. later.

Yay let us all surrender our privacy to the cloud... Sometimes I feel like the only one that understands the long term implications cloud based computer has when we allow our content and log files on others' servers. Thankfully I know I'm not the only one though.

Here's to hoping they correct the obvious problems like notifications, poor photo organizational control, a corrected USB voltage, and a simple central file system (I know, not holding my breath).
