What crack-addled mind seriously thinks it'd be sensible or probable that Apple would come out with a new iPad 5 months after... coming out with a new iPad?

I mean, I suppose, if they just wanted to take the biggest splashiest attention grabber product they have and not bother capitalizing on all the time & money they spent on iPad2, and just completely hamfist the frickin thing up it's own arse for the sheer bloody hell of it, then yea, sure it makes total sense.

Also, the cloud is only as good as your connection, which is usually less than wonderful, especially with every frickin app in the appstore trying to stream everything it does over wifi, not to mention, god forbid, you actually have other computers in the house trying to send data over your network too. Open that physical USB bus up already! ...or better yet light peak connectivity...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8G4)

They just need to bring the ability to edit photos from my aperture/iphoto library on my ipad, while syncing those changes back to Mac after!

My thoughts exactly. Our school district (ISD 482) just bought 1,465 iPads for its students, and I can see us getting really mad if Apple were to release a new iPad 6 mos. later.

Jesus, it's not like the iPads you bought suddenly stop working when a new model comes out.

How am I suppose to access my music via cloud via 3G? Especially if one has tiered data?

And, why would they sell iPhone 5 without iOS 5? Thats just ...

TechCrunch likely doesn't know jack about dates or new features in iOS 5. Just saying.

They have a terrible track record. I think the fact that they're still going with the iPad 3 release this fall completely invalidates anything they're saying.

So if i'm getting this right then..

iPhone 5 to be unveiled in WWDC '11, but with iOS 4 firmware.
iPhone 5 to have Dual Core A5 processors and rumored bigger screen + other new tweaks
They will do a preview of iOS 5 though.

So WWDC '11 will focus a lot on Lion, which is amazing.
And we'll be seeing iOS 5 which is going to be a complete revamp? This is almost too good to be true! So i guess iOS 5 probably be using the Dual Cores in the iPhone 5, which would mean that some features will be omitted from the iPhone 4.

If Apple delivers then i won't mind waiting a few more months for iOS 5, so all in all WWDC '11 will be the deciding day.

Very good news.

But what's this about an iPad 3? I find that very hard to believe, since Apple clearly said that 2011 will be the Year of the iPad 2.

My thoughts (as a developer):

Reasons to push it back (or more technically, announce it later):
1) Data Center in NC was supposed to be ready in 2010, but actually ready 3-6 months later than planned.
2) iOS 5 tied to cloud services, see point #1

Reasons not to delay:
1) In 2008, Apple said they would strongly prefer not to release too many services at once (they turned on MobileMe and the App Store in July, and MobileMe suffered terribly for weeks to months).
2) More time to let Android and webOS catch up.

Of course, I want iOS 5 ASAP because notifications are so horribly broken, it's kinda sad, especially on the iPad where you KNOW it can be done in a better, less obtrusive way. That's one point where I say iOS for iPad really is just a scaled up iPhone version.

I'm not really sure Apple cares about your school district.

As long as they show it and preview it, I'm okay with waiting. Especially if it's a redesign

Agreed. As long as the preview looks amazing, and Apple delivers, and if this is a complete revamp of iOS, then i'm all up for more waiting.
But the iPhone 5 should be released in the usual time period.

Problem I have is timing. Why does Apple continue to release the new iPhone / iPad yet we have to wait months afterwards for the iOS update to take advantage of them? Last year it took until November for the original iPad update. Now they're going to offer the iPhone 5 with a several month lag for the iOS 5 upgrade?

makes perfect sense from a business point actually:

when the new software comes out apple will see a boost in hardware sales due to the new functionality.

Meanwhile early adopters, really feel welcomed to the Apple community when months later their product is suddenly even better than they ever planned.

Its amazing how people are so quick to assume Apple doesnt know what they are doing.

i want what the "reliable sources" are smoking.

jokes aside, this is terrible. too long of a wait.
and apple better not skimp my 4th gen touch on features, i want FULL iOS 5 support.

Apple will do a point release to support all the new hardware features of the iPhone 5. Like they did with the Verizon iPhone.

I highly doubt this is the case. The iPhone still leads the forefront for iOS devices and will receive iOS 5 when it is released. The only way this works is if the release of iPhone 5 is in September and I don't see that happening any time soon.

I just don't understand the thought of an iPad 3 this fall. Unless they're trying to line up iPad updates with iPod updates, I don't see how this is possible or even really needed. I like the timing of the current releases. It offsets any updates of iPhones and iPods because they all have different release times.

Having iOS 5 this fall does make sense, honestly.

The rumors talking about the iPad 3 are mostly saying it would be a different model than the current iPad. There's multiple Macbook Pros. Don't be surprised if there are multiple iPads, like an iPad pro.

For anyone thinking Apple will release a new iPad in the fall... don't bet on it. The last two releases have shown that it takes AT LEAST several months before supply is able to adequately meet demand--especially when you look at it from a worldwide perspective. Do you really think they'd risk a shortage during the holiday season? Not a chance.

What crack-addled mind seriously thinks it'd be sensible or probable that Apple would come out with a new iPad 5 months after... coming out with a new iPad?

Perhaps one who thinks Apple are going to be far more aggressive with the iPad than they were with the phone. They watched Android steamroll over their early lead. Maybe they don't want to see that happen again. Add one more month to that figure and you have a twice yearly refresh. Not that insane, if the refresh is small.

Upgrade the screen and/or add NFC, and you have a legitimate iPad 3 that is not so far away from the iPad 2 as to:

a) require significant re-engineering.
b) cause the stupids to freak out that their perfectly decent iPad 1/2 just got made obsolete by the sheer existence of this modestly improved V3.

The pay-off is that new buzz is created going into the holiday season, and crucially keeps the impression of Apple being just out of reach of the competition.

Or perhaps you thinks that Asus and the like wont flood the market with just good enough devices at a cheap enough price point to make consumers question whether the $500+ device is really so much better than the ~$300 device on the shelves at WalMart?

You really don't seem to do shades of grey well. My iPad continues to show my calendar just fine when away from my WiFi. When it's in range of my WiFi however, it just has the ability to auto sync changes. Given that, what exactly are you ranting about here?
