Apple isn’t going to buy Disney. Didn’t Tim or someone recently say they don’t purchase large corporations? Ironically, I remember reading rumors that Disney was going to buy Apple back in the dark ages.

Apple should’ve pulled the trigger on purchasing TW. Had they, their Apple TV+ service would’ve had a wealth of back catalogue to offer along with original content.

Cue "expressed interest" in a full acquisition of Time Warner, but Cook was not ready to agree to the deal, which would have been somewhere around $100 billion. Neither Cook nor Bewkes expected to reach an acquisition deal, and Time Warner was ultimately sold to AT&T.

At $100 billion, Apple would have overpaid. AT&T only paid $85.4 billion for Time Warner Inc.

What could have been...

AT&T isn't likely to survive this mess. They still are saddled with their DirecTV service, and have refused realistic offers for that mess. Who knows what this will do, but I blocked Discovery Channel because I was tired of the BS programming. So much of it was just so far beneath me. I wouldn't even let my dog watch it! My MIL was addicted to watching that mess, and the Science Channel. I don't consider 'documentaries' about alien autopsies, and other freaky conspiracy junk science on any level. It's pure garbage, and should be embarrassing for any company to be caught broadcasting. Good grief...

Some of y’all are crazy. Apple does not have to buy anyone or anything, it would just add to antitrust issues anyways. Apple TV+ is a great add on service, much like prime video is for Amazon (early days of prime video we’re awful, at least Apple TV+ has good content). I’ll be more than happy to have Apple TV+ in my apple one bundle when my Apple Music free trial ends.

I think where Apple was going is that they would like the user to create their own library of content by subscribing to additional channels or buying extra iTunes content, or both. Apple’s original content is there to draw users into opening the TV app.

In this context, a back catalogue wouldn’t fit their goals at all. You spend billions on content that may not fit in with your overall theme, is likely already replicated by other streaming services like Netflix, and dissuade users from buying other content.

It’s just setting a huge pile of money on fire.

If what you described is their strategy, it's a terrible one.

Why do big companies need to keep buying other big companies? I don't think I like the idea of a media monopoly, and Disney is already bad enough buying up companies on their own.

Unless you consider Apple TV+ a much bigger property than it is, apple buying *any* media company is just a change of ownership, not a consolidation of media companies.

Apple TV+ would be more attractive to me if it included a back catalogue of films and TV shows from iTunes.

iTunes is a store for content providers to sell or rent movies and shows. What in the world makes you think apple would be able to use it in their atv+ service?
