And what's stopping another country from building a database of photos they find troubling and telling apple "you must detect matches of these, you have to comply"?
Nothing will stop it, once the tech exists it will be used, just a matter of time.
People are simply too stupid to recognize and interpret this.

“Nobody has the intention of building a wall!"
Walter Ulbricht - June 15, 1961.

On 13 August 1961 the GDR started building a wall that divided the East and West of Germany for 28 years.

And what's stopping another country from building a database of photos they find troubling and telling apple "you must detect matches of these, you have to comply"?
Apple claims that an offending image must appear in at least two countries' databases. But really, what would stop that is that it's just not a very useful surveillance method. Remember that the system matches specific photographs, not subjects or concepts. And the user would need several images matches before Apple would be notified.

If China wants to find someone, they have much easier methods.

Road signs are passive objects, put a permanent red bar with blah blah in their chat views and we’re fine.
And this style of argument, that nitpicks back-and-forth about the flaws in the other's analogy (every analogy has flaws) while the original point is lost… well, that's a lot like a meandering country road that gets rougher and more overgrown the longer you travel on it!

Okay to build on your stupid analogy. What if they built a system inside your car that would detect when you're about to run someone over and the brakes come on and say "are you sure you want to run over this person? This could send you to prison for a very long time and the cops will be automatically called if you continue" -- That's basically what this system is doing, and it's only for kids under 13 for pete's sake.
Auto driving cars would do that for you too btw. The rest is off topic.

Also, you see it as fallacy, but we see what will likely happen in the future. Guess what, it’s not hard to figure out what those governments are going to do, just that we have little to no power to alter it.

I just don't understand, apple says the CSAM stuff is done on device and known images are reported. But in that case, couldn't apple use "on device machine learning" as an excuse to carry out anything a government wants them to do by law? What's to stop a government from making a law that requires apple to report images that promote homosexuality? I'm usually not a slippery slope kind of guy, but this concerns me.

Yes, but governments could do so today.

In fact, the CSAM Detection system is poorly suited to detect a "gay lifestyle" whatever that is.
The Photos app would be a tremendously great tool for it, though.

And yet, people are worried about the CSAM Detection System.

Imagine thinking that companies don't already scan, catalogue and sell information about the photos of your device.

What’s to stop any government from requiring similar of android, or windows?

I’m for a license(like a driver license) to allow giving birth, that would safe many children from incompetent parents.
Wait, so you're against any form of on-device processing related to the protection of children, because that's a violation of your autonomy and privacy… but you're in favour of stopping people from having consensual sex unless they have government approval? Or are you advocating forced abortions for unapproved mothers?

I’d argue selling my information is the LEAST of such worries. They can sell all they want to advertisers, but hell I’d hate being arrested because of a few clips from pxrnh0b.

Those clips are likely copyright infringing already and the police are already pushing to get constant, perpetual, on-demand access to citizens phones.

In the words of Ronald Reagan, "Trust, But Verified" ...

if/when Apple decides to bring back CSAM, a-lot of people will be watching them closely, & for good reason !

Looks like I have an angry stalker! For the record @Shirasaki, I'm not angry at people who hold opposing views to mine on an Internet forum. I am angry however when I see apathy regarding the abuse of children. There are people here who can see that these issues are complex, and who try to balance both sides of the argument. There are others who either make light of these serious issues ('Think of the children!', 'grab the popcorn', etc), or speak like the sanctity of their personal iPhone is the very cornerstone of human rights, to the exclusion of all else. Perhaps you should direct some of your anger their way?

Two angry stalkers!
Maybe we just need more (like button) emojis to express our feelings.

This should serve as a reminder to all that Apple not only has the ability to find child pornography, but any sort of pornorgraphy.

Perhaps they already do...

You can search for "Sunsets" and "Beaches" in Photos, maybe Apple is also keeping track of other types of images at the same time.
full exposed moon

Cut off the access of who can send messages to the phones of kids under this age and only allow pre approved access to websites by the parents. Why someone 13 and under needs a phone other then maybe direct contact with their parents at most is beyond me. Seems like a better solution than Big Brother scanning all our phones but that's just me.
