I have a difficult time getting up in the mornings and coffee plus a shower is the only things that help wake me up.

I, too, will pay the increased cost of coffee - gladly!

Well, we all know that you are a hopeless addict.

I, on the other hand, am a tower of strength and could forgo coffee for a long period of time...possibly a matter of minutes!:p

Yes, I know exactly where you are coming from; as I am not a morning person either, shower plus coffee is the only way I can contemplate facing into a new day…….

Heard the bad news about the price of coffee going up so I bought extra to hold me over for a while.. $9.99 each at Costco

a large iced coffee at dunkin is already pushing 3 dollars! i can't imagine having to pay more than that.

Happy hour 2-6!

99 cents all sizes. Go during those hours, and put it in your fridge overnight. Ta-da!

That's an awesome idea. Get enough for a year, though, cause it's not going to go down til next season (assuming it goes down)

I thought it was a good idea as well. BTW, the expiration date on these are March of 2016. I'll probably buy more the next time I go to Costco as long as the price hasn't gone up. I love this coffee, and for $9.99 for 3 pounds, it's a great deal!

I wouldn't pay much mind to the expiration dates. My mom is friends with a Nun, and at their convent, had stocked up on tons and tons of food in 2001, after 9/11, in case things went really wrong; they would be stocked for sometime.

Last I saw her, she told this story, and said that they were just finishing some of the food that they had stocked up with, most of which expired in 2003. They've been eating it for about 12 years.

So, if you have the storage space in your house, you might as well stock up. Who knows, if I had known that fuel was going to up so high, I wish I would have "stocked up" on it when it was less than a dollar. But I dont think that that would have lasted this long lol

No.

Just no.

!2 year old food!?

Never.

And we won't even talk about coffee!

;)

As long as that? Are you suggesting that you consider yourself able to forego coffee for several whole minutes? Periods of time marked by several rotations of the seconds hand on a clock……..what an eternity……I'll concede that I cannot see how this can be achieved…..

I'm speechless. And this is not something which happens often.

The topic of nuns and food belongs to a long, detailed philosophical discussion, preferably in a different thread at another time…..but it is an avenue of self-imposed deprivation which is fascinating to explore…..

I think the best you could say about 12 yr old coffee is that is probably won't kill you. :p

That's the operative word...and I wouldn't bet on it!

It's a matter of will...a matter of courage and fortitude.

OK..it's a lie!

It sound incredulous, I know; but evidence suggests that as long as the can itself maintains it integrity, the food inside is probably safe* to consume.

* How good it tastes, is another question!

Per the NPR report, Don't Fear That Expired Food

"In 40 years, in eight countries, if I think of major product recalls and food poisoning outbreaks, I can't think of [one] that was driven by a shelf-life issue," Ruff says.

Canned food, in particular, can stay safe for a really long time. In 1974, scientists at the National Food Processors Association in Washington, D.C., got their hands on several old cans of food.

Janet Dudek, now semi-retired and living in Vienna, Va., was among the scientists who analyzed this old food. Her assignment was a can of corn, vintage 1934, that was found in someone's basement in California.

When they opened the can, Dudek says, the contents looked and smelled pretty much like ordinary canned corn. Analysis showed that it had most of the usual complement of nutrients — although there were lower levels of a few, such as vitamin C.

Results were similar for century-old canned oysters, tomatoes and red peppers in cans recovered from a sunken steamboat, buried in river silt near Omaha, Neb.

Dudek says, as far as she knows, nobody actually tasted this food. That just wasn't done, she says. But they probably could have. "It would have been safe to eat if the can itself maintained its integrity," she says.

First beer then coffee. And I hear peat is likely to become scarce too, so there goes my scotch.

Bloody hell.

I might have to hitch to MA and scout for a certain flat-topped coffee maniac to mooch off of....

Don't worry, i've been to Islay recently and they have enough peat for a thousand years easily!

I appreciate your fascination. I like that story. But it's true, expired stuff won't kill you :p

I once gave up coffee. Worst hour of my life. There are many around me that would not appreciate me being without my morning cup of coffee. I'm stockpiling.

I once tried something with half the caffeine of coffee. Worst hour of my life. Never tried coffee.

I looked into this a bit...

The Brits used to be into coffee, but a bug took over the crop in areas where it was being produced and they had to switch to tea. Coffee production was eventually moved to new areas and supplies improved.

Like the tree eating beetles, temperature changes have allowed those same bugs to follow the coffee plant to the new areas. Trouble is, there aren't now even newer areas to move production to. So a solution will have to be 'stay and fight'. Ie, chemicals, DNA, etc.

Chocolate is also getting pricier. The price of both coffee and cocoa beans are climbing. Just sad...what would I do without both of those wonderful things??!

Drink water. From the tap. There's enough chemicals in that to spark a buzz.
