Would you please explain what is this USB cable doing and if it’s necessary in such circumstances?

Also, have you tried to connect this cable with Nintendo Switch and Apple XDR? Thanks.
Both PS4 and switch can directly transmit HDMI signals to My LG 5K ultrafine displays which also only type-c input. I'm sorry I don't have XDR, but I think it should be the same principle. Sorry to confuse you, just trying to help.

The HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort converter in the cable requires more power than the HDMI port can provide so USB is required. Also a USB-C display may use the USB connection for USB audio (XDR doesn't have speakers), and USB hub.

Club-3d has a HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort adapter. With that you would need a bidirectional USB-C to DisplayPort cable to connect it to the XDR's Thunderbolt/USB-C port.

LG UltraFine 5K does not have HDMI input. Are you using an adapter? If you are using an adapter then it's not exactly directly transmitting HDMI to the LG UltraFine 5K.

I think what PCuser214 meant is, using the adaptor he mentioned, he could turn on the LG UF 5K by the HDMI source.

I'm sorry maybe I didn't express it well,I am not a tech guy. All I'm saying is this CABLE I shared above (#24) is just a simple HMDI output to USB-C input cable. It can transmit HDMI source like ps4 or Switch to the USB-C monitor like LG 5k with no delay when you play it and also no converter needed.

Based on the seller’s description, USB-C is actually use DP signal, and there is a chip built in this cable, so if you want to transfer the DP source to the USB-C monitor only need to add a DP to HDMI converter. Like this one.

For the usb2.0 on this cable it provide sound from WIN & MAC for LG ULTRAWIDE monitor special needs. For other USB-C monitors only need to use HDMI can provide perfect sound and video,I don't know why, maybe it needs power supply as you said.

Understood. A great find that I thought might never exist.

That DP to HDMI converter is only for 1080p. A more reasonable DP to HDMI converter does 4K 60Hz. However, you do not want to use DP to HDMI with a HDMI to DP cable because that would be redundant and the HDMI conversion is a bottleneck (it has less bandwidth than DisplayPort especially if you use the 1080p HDMI to DP converter).

I explained that already (USB connection is for power for HDMI to DisplayPort conversion and for USB audio to displays that have USB audio like the LG UltraFine 4K display which also uses USB for camera and brightness control).

@joevt

My friend have this LG ultrawide 4K model which does not have a built in microphone or 3.5mm jack ,Did you know how to input audio source to this monitor ? I mean is there any USB-C dock or something can make sound and video input signal separate to two input?

LG UltraWide 4K has USB audio. The USB audio comes from the computer that it is connected to (using USB-C cable, or USB+DisplayPort to USB-C cable or adapter). To get audio to the LG UltraFine 4K, the audio needs to go to the computer then there may be an app with a play through option that can take the audio input and output it to the USB audio output device of the LG UltraFine 4K.

Thanks for the help this is great to konw. One more help please, Did you known how to get sound from ps4 to this LG 4K use the HDMI to USB-C cable I found ? Because all LG ultrafine model did not get sound from this cable only video, We can separate the sound from ps4 USB sound adapter or HDMI sound extrater get 3.5mm or Bluetooth signal but USB-C. So is other way to put the sound separately to the LG 4k monitor?

If the PS4 supports USB audio, then the cable at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/combination-ps4-and-xdr-display.2217347/post-29266811 should be all that you need. Then change the audio output device in the PS4 menu to the LG display.

If the PS4 supports USB audio, but doesn't have an option to output audio to the LG display, then it means the PS4 has crappy drivers.

If the PS4 does not support USB audio, then you need to output the audio from the PS4 to a computer, and have the computer output the audio to the LG display using the USB connector of the HDMI+USB to USB-C cable.

This is the solution, thank you very much.

I found a HDMI output to USB-C input cable. The only option in the world. It work perfect. You can also add a DP adapter to directly become HDMI to DP.
I bought this cable and received this morning. Here I'm reporting that I tried with my Razer Blade Pro and XDR, and YES it works perfectly. With the connection of the USB cable, I can even adjust the brightness from the bootcamp panel. The resolution is only 4K, but based on this set up, I think those 1080p source, such as Switch and Xbox one, couldn't be happier.

I am glad I helped.I really found this cable in a super hard way for a long long time.
One question, can you transmit sound normally from Razer Blade to XDR ?

I cannot transmit sound from Razer Blade to XDR, and I have to manually select the output to internal speaker of the laptop.

By the way, the Switch doesn't turn on the XDR with this cable. I don't know why. But this cable does work with my Razer laptop.

Well, on my LG ultrafine I successfully turn on ps4 ps5 switch, If you can not turn switch on xdr you can try HDCP stripper it will disable the hdcp which xdr may not support correct. And recently I get sound when I connected to my PC by delete the sound source of my computer then reinstall it and select it manually !

They have a upgraded version now SOUND and HDR functions have been updated and longer cables can be used also support TB3 cable. They don’t do EBAY anymore, now they sell on wish.

That's interesting, on the wish site it is mentioned that only the newer version of the LG Ultrafine 5k is supported, but on the ebay cable description not.

Does anyone have either of the cables and an older version of the LG 5k monitor (before 2019 update) and can verify if it works or not (including sound through the integrated speakers)?

It can't work the the old LG 5K because the old LG 5K requires DisplayPort over Thunderbolt. There's no Thunderbolt controller in these adapters. The only way to get DisplayPort to a Thunderbolt 3-only display is use a Thunderbolt 3 add-in card such as the GC-ALPINE RIDGE or GC-TITAN RIDGE.

My colleague’s LG 5K is in the 2017 version supports DP-ALT mode. I try my adapter successfully connected. I think the seller’s explanation may be wrong.

I received the adapter but cant get it to work with

PS4 Pro connected to 27MD5KA-B (2017),

the specs state
Signal Input - USB-C: "Yes(x1, PD, DP Alt. Mode, USB3.1 Gen1), UHD@60Hz"

I'm not sure about the additional power delivery to the adapter

I tried both LG Thunderbolt cable and the usb-c cable which came with the adapter connected to the "usb-c" port of the adapter, with and without and addionional cable plugged into the "5v" port of the adapter.

the power cable I tried in a 5w iphone charger, 18w ipad charger and even a macbook air charger, also plugged in into a free usbc port of the LG 5k, but no luck

Does anyone have suggestions what I can try or is there a other limitation of the LG 5k even it has "DP alt mode"?

27MD5KA is the old LG UltraFine 5K which only supports Thunderbolt. Therefore you need a HDMI to DisplayPort adapter connected to a DisplayPort input of a Thunderbolt 3 add-in card, which is connected to the LG UltraFine 5K using Thunderbolt.

27MD5KL is the new LG UltraFine 5K currently being sold by Apple which supports Thunderbolt (5K60 10bpc) or USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode input (5K30 or 4K60 10bpc).

thanks for your reply and suggestions, according to seller there maybe 2 variations of the 27MD5KA-B, maybe the later produced support DP alt mode

also suggestion of the buyer to connect an iPad Pro resulted in iPad Pro saying: "the ipad does not support thunderbolt accessories" when connected to my 27MD5KA-B

I think I'm just out of luck with my old model, I wont invest in more hardware just to be able to connect my PS4 Pro.

The communication with the seller is really flawless by the way, he offered also a refund
