Thank you for your time and insight. I too would like Weight Lifting and Yoga as options on Workout.

I did cycling. Omg... The work out app is fantastic. Legit it CAN not be done better. I love it!!! I do want a heart rate graph though!
The results for anyone who care. :)

Ok, I just did another outside run and the results were very close to prior runs. The AW recorded my distance 2.63 miles. My prior runs recorded on my iPhone with Runmeter were always 2.66 to 2.70 miles for the same route. So very close. This is using the outside run on the AW Workout app.

As reported earlier, HR data matches prior chest strap data. Today I glanced at the HR on the AW at the top of a couple of hills when my HR is most elevated and it reported what I expected.

I did a few things different this time from my first run where I had problems (in first post). I used my apple wired headset connected to my iPhone 6+ carried in a flipbelt. In the first run I had used a bluetooth headset that was paired to my iPhone but not paired to the watch. I will try the bluetooth headset next now that I know the base case seems pretty accurate.

I also turned off wifi on my phone as I used to have problems with iTunes match when it switched from wifi (around my house) to LTE. This isn't a problem anymore with iTunes match but there are a lot of radios interacting with the AW and iPhone so I wanted to minimize potential issues.

Sport for me. I tighten it up 1 notch before a workout to help with HR monitoring.

This is exactly what I do. Tighten up by 1 before a workout. Readings are very accurate.

How do you like your flipbelt?.....thinking about getting one.

Flipbelt works great. I like it much better than armbands.

I found the same thing.
I don't think the watch is taking the data from the phone which uses GPS and the phones motion which has always been perfect and spot on.

I had a problem yesterday when I used Strava app on my phone and the workout app on my watch - the watch was .4m out on a 4.5m run - I wondered whether the app couldn't access the phone's GPS whilst Strava was running.

Then today I used the watch app for the second half of my bike ride with my Garmin also running - they were exactly the same for distance (15 miles), so I suspect the watch was getting GPS feed for the ride (maybe because Strava wasn't running?).

I went for a four mile run yesterday. I used the outdoor run setting on my watch but also used Runtastic on my iPhone 6 plus. I used a Jaybird bluetooth headset.

On the first mile, the watch was about a tenth of a mile off from Runtastic. For each succeeding mile the distance between the two was greater.

Today I read on this board that only one App can use the GPS so the watch was guessing. Next run I'll only use the watch and see if it differs.

I ran 3 times with my 38 mm sport watch and iphone with Workout app. Heart rate = accurate. Distance = accurate.

I totally agree with the original poster :
- The heart rate data needs to be indexed to the workout data on the iphone (graph or average)

I would also like to see 4 parameters *at the same time* on the Workout app : time, distance, speed and heart rate. We can only see 2 of them at the same time so we need to swap the screen to see others.

I am also impressed for now. I hope the distance/speed calculation will be accurate on a flat surface with standalone watch after the stride length learning using the iphone.

Alex.

Sadly, I went for another walk today and the HRM just did not work again. It looked like it was working so I started off on my walk. About 5 min into it I check my watch and it says my heart rate is 65. My resting heart rate isn't even that low. It stayed that way, in the 60's for 15 min. Then I tried turning the watch around so it was on the bottom of my wrist (where you would manually take a pulse reading). Then it jumped up to 143. I moved it back to the top of my wrist and it was back down to 70's. At one point I did get about 5 minutes of what might have been accurate readings. But then it dropped back down to the 60's and 70's again.

The really frustrating thing is I tested the HRM after my walk and it was great. It was within a couple beats of what I was getting from my chest strap. I waited a bit and then checked it again and it was still accurate. Maybe it's only when I'm using the workout app that it's not accurate? I'll have to keep playing around with it. Worst part is my calories are off because the heart rate is off.

I went for a run Friday soon after receiving my watch and found that it was very accurate. At first I had a hard time finding the workout history on the phone as I was expecting to see the history on the watch. I actually like the active calories as I feel that is probably a better representation but I really wish, like others, that there was a heart rate graph. I also wish there was GPS data(if there is I couldn't find it). I like to see the map of my runs and for this reason I will probably use the nike app instead.
Then this morning I chose "other workout" for a hot yoga class. I got super sweaty and the watch did great and was accurate on HR the whole time.
I really liked how the display stayed off in the run until I lifted my arm and I have no idea how it knew the difference between me pumping my arms and me lifting to look at the watch but it did. In yoga though it was harder. I found I wanted to look at my heart rate at certain times and ended up having to tap the screen but this is more because i was doing different moves and wasn't exactly in a position to lift my arm. I am interested to see what other apps can do for yoga. I hope that apple can/will give the apps full access to the motion and heart rate info as I could see that being pretty cool.

I have a question those using the workout app, I know the main page displays time, distance, pace, and HR, but can you cycle between whether the app displays the Pace and speed (mph)?

Basically I'm asking if the workout app will tell me mph (speed) instead of just pace. I'm wanting to know how fast I'm running vs my pace.

I believe this can be changed by force touching the pace and changing it to speed (mph) but I am not sure since I do not have my watch yet.

Today I did a stair climber workout and another elliptical. The HR results match my prior chest strap results very closely. So I plan to keep my AW. Fitness and HR monitoring were my primary reasons to buy it. Overall I enjoy the Apple Activity monitoring and Workout app.

Calories are consistently lower than my chest strap recordings but I can live with that. Maybe Apple has new, more accurate algorithms or they need to adjust them. It's just a new baseline to manage to but I would like to hear more details from Apple how they determined all this including resting calories for the day which seem too high (this has been commented on in other threads).

That said, there is a lot that Apple and developers can do to improve the reporting which I'm sure will come with time.

Tomorrow I will do another outside run and am curious if the distance will match what I expect as others have reported some differences.

What is AW heart rate monitor?

I wish the run app had auto pause feature so at lights or stops signs the app pauses. Most decent running apps have that feature

Agree, when fatigued it is hard to determine Force Touch from Tap. My Garmin auto pauses and the Nike + App does a great job of auto pausing. Pain pausing the Workout App while running (especially my last in the rain).

Going to run again tomorrow and I will not use the iPhone/Nike+ App to see if this improves the accuracy of the Workout App.

I use a treadmill at 12.5 percent grade. So it's not reporting my calories right at all. No way to tell it I'm on a incline.

Actually your HR will increase proportionately to the incline/speed selected. Calories burned are calculated off HR (perceived effort). So calories burned will be recorded.

For almost all cardio this works will (swimming being the biggest exception).

I don't usually feel very comfortable wearing the watch when I go to the gym(the handlebars of the treadmill get in the way and when I swing my arms, they can easily hit handlebars)....I do bring my iPhone so I'm wondering if the activity app will function just the same? And sync up with the watch when it is in range? Or do I have to wear the watch for the activity app to work?

Also when using weather as a complication on watch face, I heard it keeps location services on at all times on the phone therefore draining battery, as opposed to when it isn't a complication and location services aren't on at all times.....is this true?

What about power reserve? Does it still track activity? What does it mean? What can the watch do and NOT do in this mode?

I noticed that activity app only really does anything when you wear the watch...so if I have my phone in my pocket at the gym and not my watch on me, the activity app just does not do anything in terms of moving or exercising or standing....

I thought data would sync up when the iPhone was in range of the watch... But it doesn't

Quick question. What should I pick for my workout during indoor basketball? Indoor run? But some of you have said that outdoor run is more accurate...

You MUST wear the :apple:Watch for the HR sensor/calorie counter/Workout App to work. Also for just Steps you would have to carry your iPhone in your pocket (or hand) if you don't use the :apple:Watch.

I think 'Other" would be best. Running is for maintaining a fairly consistent speed (aerobic rate) over time.

Steps are only in the health app right? So the activity app really only functions while wearing the watch?

The results from the watch match near perfect to online calculators of gross calories burned on a level surface if I feed in the data. If I raise the incline to what I use on the treadmill in the calculator it then matches gross calories burned shown on my treadmill computer with a chest strap for the same work out. So something is up.

I did an experiment today and changed my age setting on the apple watch. I am in my 50's but very fit and exercise every day. My elliptical has age settings and I have to tell it I am younger to raise the HR max in order to complete some of the HR exercises.

So today I set my age to be 30 years younger (yes I wish) and did another elliptical workout.

Original calories: 278 active, 76 resting, 354 total
Younger age calories: 345 active, 76 resting, 421 total

This makes sense but I was just curious how age affected Apple's algorithms. Now time to set back to my actual age.....which I think is actually a bit conservative in my case but I would rather be conservative.

Also, HR results continue to be spot on accurate.
