it's gonna be a laughing stock at retail stores if they JUST release a 4S.

Customer walks up to salesperson:

Customer:

"Whats the difference between the 4 and the 4S?"

Salesperson:

"The 4S is slightly faster and the pictures you can take with it are unnecessarily and unnoticeably larger in resolution!"

Customer:

Ok, I'll take the iPhone 4.

So this is the new World antenna for the low-end iPhone 4 8 GB model that's going to be sold for 99$ or maybe the world antenna for the iPhone 5 that uses the same case as the iPhone 4 but is still the 5th generation iPhone with a much better SoC and tons of other new features ?

People, the 3G -> 3GS update was quite a big update. There will be no "4S" iPhone, it's going to be a 5. Apple didn't fix the naming with iPhone 4 to break it again.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I am so tired of these non-sensical rumors about two new iPhones and about Apple messing up the naming scheme. The most obvious thing that would happen is that Apple will release an iPhone 5 that looks largely like the iPhone 4 but with vast internal improvements (the kind of thing that made my 3Gs so much better than an iPhone 3G -- good enough to still be installing updates on it). I think Apple will also replace the iPod Touch with the iPad Nano which is essentially the same thing, but with an option for a pay-as-you-go data plan.

If Apple gets the internals correct on the next iPhone, I'd be happy to upgrade my iPhone 3Gs and use the iPhone 4 form factor -- no redesign required -- just give it the right processor, memory, and hopefully 4G LTE and an upgraded screen.

Sure I think Apple should offer a cheap-or-free phone with contract, but I think the iPhone 3Gs has been doing just fine in that regard and so will the 8GB version of iPhone 4.

I'm in this camp. It's either just an iPhone 4S or just an iPhone 5, not both. Either way, the 4 becomes the $49 phone.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

You won't get LTE. You almost surely won't get a new screen. But I agree the 3GS is still one REALLY solid phone. I had my iPhone 4 stolen a week ago, so went back to 3GS until my upgrade availability cycles Nov. 1 -- plus whatever new phone is out by then. I'm not feeling the switch at all. In fact, in the ergonomic and rugged categories, I prefer the 3GS.

Combining GSM and CDMA phones into single design, Apple has more constraints on antenna design. As a result, iPhone 4S will have worse reception on CDMA than the current Verizon version of iPhone 4 and worse reception on GSM than the current AT&T version of iPhone 4. But Apple will save on manufacturing and logistics costs.

Wrong. The CDMA phone already had GSM capabilities, it was just deactivated. And no one knows how GSM runs on the CDMA phone for that reason.

My basic problem-and why I think Apple consumers are becoming dumber-is that Apple is never required to offer products that are best as they can be at the price point anymore but simply put as profitable as they can be. Their margins are high, and their products aren't even top of the line technologically, and their customers aren't demanding it. I think they can be and Apple can sell even more-but they don't have a reason to, and I can't blame Apple for this.

Not everyone who buys an iPhone is dumb. Although I think buying an iPhone is dumb right now. But I think the idea that consumers have a "Apple can, but doesn't have to meet your needs" attitude I see on this board? I believe those buyers ARE dumb.

And with specs, I won't give them the benefit of the doubt. If Sammy can do it, Apple can too. What Apple fan would disagree with that?

I understand your point and I think they could do better on specs on their products. But in the other hand they still ahead of the competition on many ways. Just because some of the competitors have "better" specs, people are jumping into Apple because the whole experience is superior.
That said if the new iPhone is faster, have less reception issues due the antenna and on top of that have the IOS 5, is a great offering imo. Sure I would be interested on a new design and larger screen and of course LTE but I can live without it for another year or so. I just don't see compelling reasons to go to a competitor phone just because their specs are better.

I think people are forgetting a few things..

the first being, the reason we're seeing people saddened by the of a "4s" release is because, IF they really are only releasing an updated iphone 4 then why has it taken them so long? the kept the june (i think) release schedule for the 1st 4 phones and missed it for this one which lead people to believe something big was in the works. more speed does not equal big.

2nd, it is entirely possible that these parts are not for even an updated "4s" considering all we have seen is the antenna band and front and back it could just be parts for a new batch of iPhone4 released at a decreased price with a fixed antenna. doesnt mean they're going to get up there and annouce 2 different phones. simply fix a problem and drop the price of the old one, then release the new.

Corrected that for you.

Guys,

most of you wouldn't complain if you were using a Droid now and were dealing with countless of pre-installed apps that Self Start, run all the time, kill your battery and you can't un-install unless you Root your Phone and void the warranty.

BTW, if you use some of these Pre-Installed apps, YOU WILL BE CHARGED EXTRA MONTHLY FEES!!

People are reading way too much into these parts. That band IS the iPhone 5 band. Anyone want to make bets on that?

Looks like these confidential insider sources use the same inaccurate terminology as my 60 year-old mother.

"The new iPhone's gonna have five gees, right?"
:eek::rolleyes:

Yes, mom. Five gees, and thirty-two gee bees.

Off-topic, but no way! Just because the nano has a touch screen, does not make it an iPod touch. It doesn't even have iOS. the touch and nano are completely different products for different needs.

Re-read his post. The "iPad Nano" is what he said. He means they'll rebrand the iPod Touch to iPad Nano and add 3G.

What sort of VAST IMPROVEMENTS can be made to the iPhone 4? Boost its speed, boost the megapixels and resolution of the camera...what other VAST IMPROVEMENTS can be made internally? The phone is perfect in almost every way.

If they don't redesign, they better have something UNBELIEVABLE to add to the 4. I'm talking like ridiculous unbelievable makes my willy big sort of unbelievable.

Great, another person who doesn't know the difference between resolution and image size. 8MP makes the images larger, but if anything, it decreases their quality/resolution. Don't fall into the trap of "more megapixels = better camera".

More resolution means easier zooming/cropping though. See the iPhone 4 vs Xperia Arc tests to see what a 8MP with superior optics can do. The Sony optics rumored to be included in the iPhone 5 are much better than the iPhone 4 and the added resolution means crisper overall images.

The Arc doesn't present the noise problems that are so often associated with high megapixel counts and smaller lens/optics.

When an image is higher in megapixel, it's DEFINITELY higher in physical resolution. It doesn't mean the picture is better in quality, but it definitely is higher in resolution. That's what megapixels do. They boost resolution. They do not determine quality.

I was saying the whole statement in a joking manner, anyway. In that, if Apple thinks that boosting megapixels and boosting speed a little is enough to make me buy an upgrade, they are out of their minds. And I'm the biggest iPhone person that I know.

That doesn't mean the iPhone 5 won't be much better. Use both a 3G and a 3GS and comeback here and tell us "No redesign".

Until iOS 4 broke the 3G and dropped features, there was no need to own a 3GS.

Currently, every report I've read indicates that iOS 5 runs perfectly smoothly on an iPhone 4. There are no additional features being offered that require the next best chip. When one does come around, maybe there will be a reason to upgrade. Until then, there is zero reason to own an iPhone with an A5 chip. It simply isn't needed.

But, you've been beating this drum of "The Amazing 3GS" for months, I don't expect you to stop now. It was an incremental upgrade that offered very few new features (video recording being #1) at the time.
