Sloppy mock-ups always make me worry... Hopefully, the actual Maps in iOS 6 will be much nicer.
For that to happen wouldn't Google need to write their own iOS app for Maps? As far as I know, the stock Google apps (YouTube, Maps) were written by Apple.
The Gmail app is made by Google.
I know there are some good turn-by-turn solutions paid and free, but it would be nice if Apple offered one with the OS without need for a subscription.
Apple will offer turn-by-turn in 3D (for those who can fly)
(If they add turn-by-turn navigation, I will NOT be glad to have itIve seen my Android friends get in a bind when they lose their cell signal and Internet connection. Driving instructions are too important to be reliant on the phone companys signal! Id be in the same boat if I used Waze or MapQuest on iOS. Instead I paid a measly ~$20 for Navigon MyRegion and have full navigation even with NO phone signal available. Which includes the most remote areas, where GPS navigation is vital. Full navigation apps are so cheap that having navigation sometimes for free is hardly an Android selling point. Its yet another thing that sounds good in a bullet list and doesnt mean much in practice: spend ~$20 and get something far better. There are many nice GPS apps on iPhone, with no ongoing subscription costs needed.
Nokia implemented this 3D mapping in OVI Maps ( now Nokia Maps ) last year, also using C3 Technologies before Apple took them over.
Yes, and you can still try that "future technology" out at maps.nokia.com, just click on 3D maps and install the plugin. It's amazing, and with Apple's GPU accelerated implementation and multi-touch interface it is going to be even better.
Agreed, these "mockups" are useless.
On another subject, though, I don't see the usefulness of a photorealistic 3D view for navigation. That's like saying I can stand in the Hollywood Hills, look out over Los Angeles, and figure out what streets I need to take by looking at the city. What I need is a 2D overhead view of the streets! No need to add complexity just for the sake of "improving".
You obviously didn't watch the original C3 promo video then did you, the 3D maps crap all over any map program to date.
If you don't want the clutter, you can keep the 3D turned off and pretend that because it's not useful to you, NO ONE finds it useful. The rest of us will turn it on and off depending on the circumstances and our needs at the time. Its cool youre so invested in this map program "crapping all over" everything else, but really what good is a 3D render of the city when it comes to navigation? I always thought apple was about being minimal and simple etc.. no extra features that do nothing but add clutter.
If it aint broke, dont fix it.
That phrase was invented for a reason. Given Apple's poor attempt at using the OpenStreetMaps in iPhoto (which were horrifically inaccurate and out of date, not to mention not crediting the OSM project) I dont hold out much hope for a half decent Maps app.
Google Maps app works fine, there really is no need to replace it other than to satisfy the stupid 'Google is evil' nonsense that seems to be spouted around by a few childish people.
The new maps in iPhoto for iOS are ridiculously outdated and even have plain spelling mistakes. They are beautiful, but there should be a bit more to a map than just the look.

I did watch the demo video, looks great but it's basically Google Earth on steroids, I don't find that revolutionary. That's my opinion, deal with it."nothing revolutionary" lol...
