What`s the resolution of the screenshot? Does it match the new stretched screen for iPhone?

Obvious fake is obvious, if it were real the bottom left wouldn't be copy and pasted in and stretched up to a hideous pixelation...

Wow, a few years ago this would have looked like sci-fi. I love living in the future where i can have a conversation with my phone while my robot is cleaning the floor. :)

I would love if Apple acquired Waze - it's become one of my favourite apps and the navigation features are top notch. It would be awesome if it could be a default install on every iDevice (even if they don't buy the company).

Looking forward to the updated Maps app, though. Anything to rid iOS of the terrible Google apps. The sooner iOS sheds itself from Google, the better.

I know there are some good turn-by-turn solutions paid and free, but it would be nice if Apple offered one with the OS without need for a subscription.

Apple will offer turn-by-turn in 3D (for those who can fly)

Why all the haters?

I personally don't know why everyone is hating on this...I think it's going to be really great. If you are visiting somewhere new and you want to see what the area looks like what are your options right now? Google streetview is lame compared to this. If you can zoom in and free-look around the town that will be really awesome. Free navigation software for the iPhone would be nice too although I've already bought TomTom and am pleased with it.

Apple will offer turn-by-turn in 3D (for those who can fly)

Since Apple will have created a 3D photorealistic model of the entire city there is no reason why they can't start from a distance (in the sky) and then zoom in to street level to show where you are and were you're going. It'll look like a video game except it's the real city and not some mockup.

Could this possibly be a new iPhone only feature or will it be for all iOS 6-supporting devices? I'm eager to have this on my 4S.

I'm really looking forward to a fresh take on turn by turn navigation. I really hope they offer a good solution this go round. 3D is nice, but I could care less, for now at least.

(If they add turn-by-turn navigation, I will NOT be glad to have it  I’ve seen my Android friends get in a bind when they lose their cell signal and Internet connection. Driving instructions are too important to be reliant on the phone company’s signal! I’d be in the same boat if I used Waze or MapQuest on iOS. Instead I paid a measly ~$20 for Navigon MyRegion and have full navigation even with NO phone signal available. Which includes the most remote areas, where GPS navigation is vital. Full navigation apps are so cheap that having “navigation sometimes” for free is hardly an Android selling point. It’s yet another thing that sounds good in a bullet list and doesn’t mean much in practice: spend ~$20 and get something far better. There are many nice GPS apps on iPhone, with no ongoing subscription costs needed.

Turn by Turn merely refers to the Apps ability to give you instructions. As you point out, Navigon gives you turn by turn by doesn't require an internet connection. That is because with Navigon the map of the whole Country is downloaded. Who is to say you will not be able to download Apple's Maps eliminating the problem you mention?

Nokia implemented this 3D mapping in OVI Maps ( now Nokia Maps ) last year, also using C3 Technologies before Apple took them over.

Yes, and you can still try that "future technology" out at maps.nokia.com, just click on 3D maps and install the plugin. It's amazing, and with Apple's GPU accelerated implementation and multi-touch interface it is going to be even better.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.

That phrase was invented for a reason. Given Apple's poor attempt at using the OpenStreetMaps in iPhoto (which were horrifically inaccurate and out of date, not to mention not crediting the OSM project) I dont hold out much hope for a half decent Maps app.

Google Maps app works fine, there really is no need to replace it other than to satisfy the stupid 'Google is evil' nonsense that seems to be spouted around by a few childish people.

You say that like other phones aren't using GPU accelerated multi-touch interfaces lol.

I would assume we'll see Nokia's 3D maps on Bing Maps on Windows Phone 8 as well....Google can't be far behind at all either since Google Earth essentially has this already.

Agreed, these "mockups" are useless.

On another subject, though, I don't see the usefulness of a photorealistic 3D view for navigation. That's like saying I can stand in the Hollywood Hills, look out over Los Angeles, and figure out what streets I need to take by looking at the city. What I need is a 2D overhead view of the streets! No need to add complexity just for the sake of "improving".

This is generally true, however I can imagine one scenario where a 3D view is better than a 2D view.

Imagine there is a large, irregularly shaped building, that you have only a single address for. You need to find a specific entrance into the building. The entrances are labeled, but from an above head view, you wouldn't be able to read them.

If you had a 3D view, on the other hand, you could fly about the building so that you could determine where the entrance is.

Street view sort of works with this, but it's very tedious to move along the entire perimeter of the building by rotating the bubble until it faces the building, determining it's not the right spot, rotating the bubble again to click on the road, waiting for it to load, and repeat, again and again.

This is a real issue that I have occasionally. I think the new view could be very helpful.

You obviously didn't watch the original C3 promo video then did you, the 3D maps crap all over any map program to date.

Its cool youre so invested in this map program "crapping all over" everything else, but really what good is a 3D render of the city when it comes to navigation? I always thought apple was about being minimal and simple etc.. no extra features that do nothing but add clutter.

If you don't want the clutter, you can keep the 3D turned off and pretend that because it's not useful to you, NO ONE finds it useful. The rest of us will turn it on and off depending on the circumstances and our needs at the time.

The phrase doesn't apply here. Apple is limited (by the license they pay for) in what they can do with Google Maps. When they own the maps, they can cache the data longer for providing turn-by-turn directions even when you lose connectivity for a while.

If you can't imagine ways to improve on the Maps app, you're not trying very hard. When they get it perfect, you can use your phrase.

The new maps in iPhoto for iOS are ridiculously outdated and even have plain spelling mistakes. They are beautiful, but there should be a bit more to a map than just the look.

I don't know if it's that ridiculous. I have an old US road atlas that I love, and in the few places where it's wrong, well, you'll have a fun adventure getting unlost. :)

They have a Waze to go before I drop my current mapping solution. Waze is a solid solution for turn by turn at any price. Can't believe someone didn't just buy these guys.

Maybe its supposed to be Steve Jobs cam or something...

I did watch the demo video, looks great but it's basically Google Earth on steroids, I don't find that revolutionary. That's my opinion, deal with it.

Well, if technology and products have to change, i don't mind if they are beefed up. better that then they're not!
