Notches/pills only make sense on a phone because it's small and you hold it by the edges. iPad is more for viewing stuff on a bigger device without distraction and due to it's size and weight there's no point minimising the bezels that much because it needs larger bezels to hold on to without putting fingers all over the touch screen.

So that's a no from me.

Not sure how well fantasy island would work on Mac OS, especially on the smaller screens, considering it would be interfering with menubar items as its width changed.

I always thought the best place for the front-facing camera on the iPad would be in the corner (top right corner in portrait orientation) That way if you rotate landscape or portrait your hand doesn't cover it. Also the iPad would not have a have predominate orientation as is does now.

Not sure I follow…
When watching a movie normally, it would be up in the top, non-movie black area so it wouldn't cover up any of the movie.

Now if they would make the pill the ‘entire‘ length of the iPad Pro on *both* long axis, allow you to, oh I don’t know dock applications on the bottom and other general Mac OS type stuff up top. And make the icons magnify when you hover over them.

Tom

-and of course the pills can auto hide/show

Except the camera is not there. It’s on the narrow side, no?

*edit* I see what you’re saying. You mean a possible redesign. Na, I’d not want that. Then if you’re holding it portrait you’d have this annoying pill on the side of screen (I read books/comics/browse in portrait quite a bit). That would be quite the eyesore!

I'm more interested in this for the camera being in landscape mode (which on all non-mini iPads it should've been ten years ago). I'm otherwise wary of a display cut-out where there never was one. The Island is an upgrade over the notch, but not having anything poke through the display is even better...unless this is a new Apple UI convention that is the future of their platforms (in which case, this is just what it is).

I agree with you. There’s no good reason for the cameras to be out of the bezel.

I Don’t. The bloody placement on my pro m1 is a joke for Face ID because it keeps asking me to move my hands. Never have a problem on my iPhone but the cameras on the iPad need to be placed landscape as I don’t think anyone uses portrait mode as much as landscape.
I have no problem with moving the camera to be better in landscape mode as long as the hardware stays in the bezel. but they definitely should not be moved into a pill into the display like this mockup has done. That's what I'm objecting to.

This is quite a possibility of actually happening, what we do know is Apple is looking at making the iPad landscape focused… but there is one major issue…

The pencil module is right where the camera module needs to be, however, bringing dynamic island to the iPad actually lowers the camera module down making room for both.

I do agree though that the bezels can’t be too thin otherwise where do you hold… and I can’t imagine them making the bezels on the other sides thicker while that one bezel is narrower.

Potentially though… they could increase the bezels while in tablet mode (via software, so they’re sort of fake bezels) then when attached to the keyboard the bezels go thinner and the dynamic island appears… just a thought.

Intel demoed a prototype tablet with software bezels years ago.
Actually, they also patented the idea.
I'd love to see Apple's take on it. It's quite clearly the future.

Doesn't appear to be anything like DI™.
