Does Apple release anything that's the same as the competition? It's not like they're slapping Lenovo's touch bar on their Macs. This one will be unique and much better in one or more ways.
Yes, yes, your religion is the revelation of God's will on earth and all others are heresy

what you need to do is get an ipad an do your dinky little 'computing' on that and quit ruining the market for people like us who want a real computer with power, ports and features. You already have your stupid ipad, why do you insist on ruinig our tool as well?

Because the vast majority of the world doesn't need computers like 'you' do. Apple is now a mass market company, albeit one with high profit margins. You are a minority Apple consumer.

What you need to do is get a Mac Pro to do you mainframe 'computing' on that and quit ruining the market for people like us who want a thin and light computer with power, sans ports, and features. You already have your stupid MacBook Pro, why do you insist on ruining our tool as well?

Yeah, see what I did there? I'm going to drink your tears when Apple disappoints you, you go to Microsoft and bitch and moan even more about how crappy Microsoft is. You and your computing needs are becoming relics outside of special niche circumstances.

Wait, so is this replacing the tactile keys?

Meaning, the keyboard is now just a flat touch screen?

If so, that's the worst thing ever.

I would love to use this with something like Photoshop for creating different shortcuts. And the first thing I thought when I heard about this the other day was having an option to put the dock there. The nice thing about the Mac is that if you can dream it, you can do it. Someone will figure out a way to hack the dock there.

Bit touchy aren't we? There are other choices in the market, no-one's making you buy a Macbook Pro. Thinkpads still have great keyboards, plenty of ports and fully interchangeable parts you can access with the Phillips head. Go vote with your wallet and buy something else.

I don't have an opinion either way on this third-party mockup. I'll wait until Monday to see what's announced and then I'll wait until they ship before I play around with it. It's a computer, not a frigging blood transfusion.

OK. This is actually really cool. Looking forward to it - hope they explore the possibilities of the innovation.

Woo! A positive comment from me! First in a long while.

Why wouldn't it? SaaS, Cloud Computing, Streaming. There's very little need for ports, or large storage, or anything else for that matter. Yeah, yeah 'Pros' may use Apple computers, but that's not who the majority of their customers are. Also, their revenue driver is the iPhone not Macs. Plus, their focus in on emerging markets (China, India) and what their consumers want. So, yeah... sorry to disappoint, but Apple isn't going anywhere: their focus isn't 'Pros' anymore. Apple is no longer a niche company.

Nail in the coffin but so true!

It took me a while to realize we were only talking about the top row and I was pretty sold on the idea as the entire keyboard being touchscreen. I was excited thinking it could become other parts of touch interface when typing not needed? But I think the top row only makes more sense, less complicated & more useful in realistic terms.

Thing is, touch screens and haptic feedback are getting so good, possibly one day a full screen keyboard will be realistic and comfortable like a regular one? I can definitely see that happening eventually, in fact we seem to be getting close.

Well, that's really cool.
But nothing beats the keyboard of the ThinkPad X220

Indeed. I wish more people knew what you were talking about. I really really hope that the new MBP keyboard doesn't resemble the MacBook keyboard. The Apple scissor keys may not be in line with a classic ThinkPad's, but it's still pretty nice for what it is.

Now I can actually see it as something useful. Might be something hard to fully grasp the use for without developers doing something with it. Function keys are definitely wasted and I honestly don't even know what they do aside from the "other" function logos I see (brightness, volume, play, etc.). If I had Photoshop open and F6 allowed me to switch layers, it would be much more helpful to have a button that said "switch layer" instead of me remembering it amongst 15,000 other keyboard shortcuts.

Unless Apple found a way to make it not the worst thing ever. For instance by not making it work just like any other flat touch screen. Why are noone thinking Haptic Feedback?

When I first saw a story on this everyone was hating it, now everyone love it.

This concept certainly shows potentially, I thought being touch and not being able to touch type on it would be bad, but I honestly rarely use the bar. If it was truly customisable like this it would be great. Imagine being able to launch an app with a tap, have iTunes/Spotify minimised in the corner, or access all the top menus without having to move your hand to the track pad, find your cursor and click. Would make things a little smother after time. :D
