Just went to my local Apple store and I have to say that I didn't even find the lag that bad. On 1400x900 there was no general OS lag. On safari it was barely noticeable on average websites, the verge was choppy but tolerable. It still pings up and down fine and is responsive, using the scroll normally on rich content websites there was no lag. Howver I tried it on the normal MBP15 and I agree the scrolling was smoother but the MBPR isn't that bad, if I didn't try the old MacBook I wouldnt have noticed the lag.

However with x1200 resolution the lag was noticeable, so I can see what Anand means. But 1400x900 best for retina on lion is perfectly useable.

This was without the 1gb update too. I definitely think that the scrolling issue is overstated. It's only going to get better on mountain lion.

I suppose it depends if you're a perfectionist or not, I could easily live with it and don't even see it as a compromise. It's also worth noting that Anand never said Haswell will fix it, he actually said that it will "take some time" to catch up with the screen resolution.

I literally can't tell the difference between the UI performance in your comparison videos. Maybe you should get a better camera to more properly illustrate your hyperbole? I hear some scientists have created one that actually allows you to record the passage of actual light waves frame-by-frame. This seems perfect for you.

In fact, your videos (along with the wonderful videos posted by the OP here) have convinced me that the rMBP doesn't have a UI lag problem. I can take a lost frame or two in exchange for that resolution.

Your exaggeration of the problem and incorrect advice is in direct conflict with the status of informed developer and walking buyer's-guide you've given yourself. Cease and desist.

PS: you appear to be frustrated on the Internet.

In other words, stop posting.

Why do so many people who do not own a rMBP think they can give a conclusive assessment of its performance? Why?

The only people who should be making conclusions are owners. After you use it for 1 week, you *may* notice the performance issues many, many others have posted about on Macrumors.

In my experience with 3 machines in here, problems have cropped up all over the place. In iMovie there's stutters that pop up while using the program. Loading OS X Finder Windows in applications also has tendencies to stutter. Swiping into things like Dashboard can stutter. It's not always as bad after things are cached but it crops up all over the place. It's frustrating.

I am not interested in making any excuses for Apple. There is no excuse. Either they have this figured out when they launch a product or not.

What is my recommendation? Buy it and use it for 13 days, if you don't like it, take it back. But you need to actually use it everyday to make a proper assessment.

Will I take mine back? I've been close to doing so. But I'm going to keep 2 of the 3 for development purposes and live with it. I do really like the screen, it runs cooler, and it's thinner and lighter. But the performance is frustrating.

I've owned every single Apple laptop there is, everyone except 17" models. That's even the PB 2400c, the Lombard, the Pismo, a gazillion Wallstreets, iBook Clamshells, including the Paris edition. I've used every version of OS X.

This computer reminds me of running OS X on the PB Wallstreet. There wasn't any GPU support and pretty much everything was offloaded to the CPU. It was slow and choppy (OS X UI events).

I'm sorry but this is an honest assessment, and after running tests and seeing others complain about choppiness, there's no denying the issues. Just to everyone... go buy it and use it. Time will sort this machine out.

How about using the rMBP to perform graphics, video editing and animation via Adobe applications or FCP & Motion? Would like to see them in action. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

I've been messing around with Photoshop (CS 6) and I'm not impressed. Moving layers around is somewhat choppy and slower than my 2011 MBP. It doesn't feel great. But let's see if Adobe updates their $ware to optimize it for ML.

So you're going to call my opinion wrong because your experience is different? Nice.

The way you go on about this damn issue one would expect it to be noticeable as soon as they use it, that wasn't the case for me. Are you going to call me a liar over that? And to be honest, I fail to see how having the laptop for 1 week or 2 weeks is going to make a massive difference if I don't find it intolerable as soon as I use it?

The issue seems to be a non starter for me. And for the record my post was my general observations and my thoughts, unlike you who try and pass your own opinion of it as fact when the OP of this thread has evidence and an opinion contrary to you.

Typing a small request... just a minute.

Imageshack.us won't let me upload it there so I had to upload it to Mediafire.

Take a look at this image (2880x1800) of pebbles. There are two images At what distance you can't tell the difference in quality of two sides?

Look it at full resolution (2880x1800), no extra zooming, full screen.

Here.

Thank you very, very much.

Took me just shy of 3 feet, at roughly 34 inches. Is that good or bad?

It's pretty clear that the left one is higher resolution at a distance of around 2.5 feet. You might be asking the wrong person as my eyes aren't great though :p

The difference is pretty clear because the details in the pebbles are noticeably blurrier on the right image.

Unfortunately I have no plans at this time to install the CS5 Master Collection I have due to the lack of Retina optimization. I do plan on purchasing Aperture and FCP later though so I might be able to help you out there.

What exactly would you like to be shown? Do keep in mind that all I have is my iPhone's camera, which I have to hold in one hand while pushing buttons with the other, so it won't be easy (or will take a long time) to do anything worthwhile on video.

Guys, it's just a computer...

Thanks to the OP for taking the time to make the videos.

How far you have to go for images to look the same?

2.6 feet? If I start seeing differences at 2.5, that's the logical answer :p
Thank you for your time but I'm not sure I understand. Correct me, please.

Closer than 2.5 ft difference in images is obvious. At 2.5 ft, difference is obvious. Suddenly, at 2.6 ft, they look the same? Is that what you're saying?

Don't be mad, just trying to figure something out.

No that's not correct for me. The closer I am, the more remarkable the difference is. The pebbles on the right, especially the two big ones in the middle, are very blurry. As you get further away, the blurriness starts to fade. At close to 3 feet I could honestly no longer tell the difference, so if someone did a blind test switching them, I couldn't confidently tell you which is which.

The way I tested it is I stood roughly 10 feet away. Didn't see any difference. I then stepped closer. Didn't see a difference. I kept coming closer until I did see a difference. I was now pretty close, so I stretched out my arm and noticed the screen was just barely out of reach. So I measured my arm. 33 inches. I added one inch to my measurement since that's what the gap was from the screen to the tip of my fingers, and posted my results here.

So are you going to tell us what these results reveal?

@TheMacBookPro - Seeing any ghosting issues on your rMBP? Getting mine in a few days and it seems to be an issue on MANY rMBPs...

I'm not him, but fwiw after 2 weeks I haven't seen so much as a hint of ghosting.

Thanks for this thread.

One thing I'm sure will invoke lag (if it doesn't then this computer is surely legendary) is to scroll while a Youtube video is playing.

Could you show a video of scrolling up and down (quickly) while this video is playing in 360p, 480p, 720p, and 1080p?

If you have the time, can you also do the same except while the video is set to "large" mode?

Thanks

At 2.5ft I start to see a difference in quality, and at 2.6+ it looks the same to me.

A little bit. I was on Safari for around 12+ hours then when I minimized the page I saw a slight hint of the address bar on the grey background. It was extremely slight- if I had a normal background on like I do now I wouldn't have noticed it.
I went to grab a drink and by the time I came back (2 or 3 minutes?) it was already gone.

Thanks for this thread.

Sure, I can do that. Give me a few days though, I want to group in all of the requests into a single video.

To the OP: thanks so much for making those videos.
I ordered a MBPr last week and have been biting my nails reading all these rants about performance / image retention, etc. Even contemplating cancelling the order.

Thank you for giving me a good night's sleep finally. I can't wait for the laptop to arrive now.

To the peeps having the performance issues: are you running fresh installs of the latest Mountain Lion DP, or are they 'upgraded' installs? I think we should be working together to better determine what, if anything tangible, is causing the problems some are obviously having.

Mine is running fine on Mountain Lion DP 4.1 (Updates all done). However, I have noticed some slight graphics card glitch when waking the machine up from sleep, it will take a couple of minutes to come right otherwise, restarting it fixes it or putting it to sleep then reopening it again. Besides that running perfectly. I did a clean install and NOT an upgrade.

I took 2 videos from my iPhone 4s. I don't notice any lag with my base rMBP and OS X 10.7.4 lion. I have only felt lag once and that was fixed by logging out and logging back in. If ML has performance improvements and better memory savings it will be sweet. But I don't feel lag, on the base rMBP.

Let me know your thoughts.

and

and the background noise in the first video is my A/C, and my fan in the second video.

The rMBP is pretty quiet.

There is a bit of UI lag using mission control in the second video! The first I've seen... quite laggy indeed. Does the lag only occur when having a large amount of spaces and apps open? Mission Control seemed quite smooth in OP's video.

Hi! I was following this thread for a while now, I'm having the same problems around the rMBP.

Since the words around the issues are quite variating, I'm trying to get a better birds-eye view of the problems around the rMBP. Would you guys be so kind to fill in the following form?

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEVtOGswaGZ0SEs3by10SWdqN0JZVlE6MQ#gid=0

I thank you in advance! I'll keep you guys posted on any conclusions that I'll find.

I haven't noticed any more lag than my previous 2009 iMac ,2009 Macbook Pro, or 2011 MBA.

Remember I was really stressing out the spaces and apps. I was also driving a 24 inch ACD with a resolution set at 1900x1200

Could someone running ML DP4 please try this on their MBPr :

Apple, About this mac, More info, switch back and forth between the overview, display and storage tabs.

On mine you can clearly see it re-draw, maust be around 10fps!!!!

Running off mains, base model, clean DP4 install. (+Aperture, FCP X)

Thanks!

I'm not going to bother making a video for something as simple as that but I can tell you that it's fairly slow on mine too. I don't think I'll be going into More Info that much though.

Thats cool, no need for a video - thanks for confirming that. I know its not just mine and thats the main thing. Thanks very much.

Glad to help :)

To those who are still waiting for me to fulfill your request: sorry but I've been quite busy over these few days. Give me a week or so and check the OP- they should be up by then.
