just a thought..

I understand that the line that has the UDP can NOT be the line eligible for upgrade even if the upgrade is transferred to a "dumb" phone line. The upgrade has to originate from the dumb phone line.

In my situation I will be using my moms upgrade (dumb phone line) to purchase the iphone 5 and then transfer it to my UDP line. What happens to the upgrade that my line has now? (11/16/12) does it get transferred to my moms line?

Can that upgrade even be transferred/used?

Wait... so what if my family plan has all smartphones, and I do an alternate upgrade from one of them?

It should keep its upgrade, but if you want to keep unlimited, you can't transfer it or use it ever.

Yes, if you don't mind that line having 2GB per month.

There's now way of reactivating the phone that is currently on the line that the upgrade is being transferred from without it losing the UDP?

From what I've heard, transferring an upgrade from a UDP line will put it into tiered data. Not sure why, but I guess that's why this is a loophole.

Verizon's stated policy is that they will no longer subsidize the cost of phones on any of their unlimited data lines.

So you cannot do anything with the subsidy (use it or transfer it), if you do you will be moved to tiered data on that line.

I have an indvidual unlimited data plan, and reading through this thread some with the same plan have added a dumb phone line (for about $10 a month), used that line to get the iPH5.

I am just waiting to see a few of these to work all the way through the process and then i'm going to try and do the same thing.

There's something that I've been thinking about since I per-ordered my iPhone 5 using my mom's upgrade so I can keep my UDP ( she's already on at 2GB data plan, and available upgrade). I've read that I shouldn't turn on the phone at all, and take it to the store to activate it. I was wondering if this was correct, or what I'm supposed to do once I receive the iPhone.

Do I need to bring her phone with me, so they can do the equipment swap?

I really dont want to mess things up, and end up getting the 2gb DP on my UDP line.

Activate the phone on her line, then take it in to the store and let them do the swap.

I was under the impression that you can't add a line to an individual plan without converting it into a family plan (and thus putting it into tiered data).

This thread has gotten very long and i think i have read through all of it. Also there are a couple of other threads discussing the same topic. That being said there have been some folks on here that have said they they added a line to their individual plan. The added line was of course not ULD. They used the added line for the iPH5 and then plan to switch the iPH5 over to the ULD number and just add a dump phone to the added line.

I will comb back through this when I get home and try to pinpoint thos folks so I can keep tabs on their progress. :D

Anymore info about the nano sims? Will the phone have to be taken to the store and given a newly programmed sim to complete the swap?

I stated this in two other threads but I'll contribute here:

You can add a new line and keep unlimited data.

You can preoder and add a new line to your existing account at 3:01AM EST and not lose it in a simple way.

GO to My Verizon, Click PRE SELL.. Add the new line. Purchase the iPhone you want on the NEW line.

Find yourself a dummy phone [a non smartphone phone line a Moto Razr or flip so you'l only be charge $9.99 for the extra line instead of $40 for a smartphones typical data package. Then switcht he iphone 5 to your smartphone line

You can keep unlimited data, NOT pay $600,700,849 for a iphone, just at the extra cost of $10 a month.

Only issue is you have a phone with a new two year contract. No biggie..

I'll wake up at 5am, preorder my iphone, turn back over go to bed.

So just to question this, here's my situation:

I am off contract now and have unlimited data. According to your directions I would:

--Add a new line to my account, pre-order the iPhone on this new line and add the 2gb data.

--Once I get the iPhone, transfer it to my primary account that has the unlimited data, and then convert the add-on line to a basic phone at $9.99 a month

Anything else I'm missing? Should I create the add on line today, or will I have to do it tomorrow morning when I preorder the iPhone?

I added a line today for $9.99 and was not forced into a shared data plan.

I looked through the thread and quoted some of the folks that i think are like me and have the individual ULD plan and are using a "sub account". Please keep in touch with this thread and let us know how things go.

I'm on Nationwide Talk & Text 700 - two smart phone lines both with unlimited data.

Line 1 - eligible for upgrade 11/30 (Wife)
Line 2 - eligible for upgrade now (Mine)

Can I get an iPhone 5 on Line 2, which would force me to switch to the $30/2GB plan and then transfer the phone to Line 1 with my wife's Phone number? I don't mind the 2GB limit on my line (line 2) - she's the one who uses massive amounts of data streaming sirius xm at work all day (no wifi at work)

Yes, that will work. She will keep unlimited data as long as you never use her line for a subsidized upgrade, or until Verizon nixes unlimited data.

Yes, you can do that, as long as you in no way use or transfer the upgrade on the line you want to keep the ULD on.

Not that we can 100% believe what VZW reps tell us, here is a rep's response on the VZW forums:

"You will be able to utilize the upgrade from your eligible line and activate the iPhone 5 on the number of your choice. The best part is that you will not need a new SIM card. When the phone arrives go to www.vzw.com and activate the device. I hope this helps."

i asked about the sim card. they said we still dont do the sim card thing like the other carriers and it wont matter, well be able to activate it over the phone

This may be moot but it got me thinking...

For all those trying to keep their Unlimited Data Plan...

I've spoken to several Reps and have been told what everyone's been told...
that a someone on an UDP cannot transfer their upgrade eligibility to another line of service and upgrade because that would still be considered upgrading to a 4G phone which means you lose UDP, right? And that makes sense because you're still using the UDPs line to upgrade to a 4G phone.

Now, using that logic, shouldn't it be the same for a non-UDP line of service? That is, if a non-UDP line of service transferred its upgrade eligibility to a UDP line... shouldn't it technically not count as an upgrade on the UDP line and not cancel out UDP? Using their logic, it would be an upgrade from an non-UDP line.

I know they probably don't see it that way, but I was just thinking about how that technically should have worked instead of everyone having to just order off the non-UDP line.

Anyway, carry on.

Guys
Can u help with this ques? Still not clear after skimming 5 or so pages

Thanks

I want to swap plans but not cell# with my wife
Her iPhone 4 is unlimited data

I was on AT&T and tried to open my own account but actually her Verizon account is tied to my social security number from my old verizon days so I was forced to add a line to her (my) account for $199. (16gb ip5)

Anyway, since she is unlimited can I take her plan and she can take mine? I don't want her number, just her plan...

she uses basically no data per month, the unlimited is such a waste for her...

Thanks for he help

So when you call to activate on the dumbphone line, are you going to switch the iphone to your desired line and cancel the 2Gb data plan at the same time (i.e. all on one call) or are you going to make 2-3 calls.

why waste time making more than one call? not like its something new to them to have someone order a phone on a line they didnt want it for. ive done it tons of times. no reason to hide the fact you dont need it. you cant use it on a dumb phone anyway

Okay, so I'm gonna be tackling Verizon all by myself on Friday just because everyone else is out of town. I just need some confirmation at this point.

-I preordered iPhone 5 on my dad's dumb phone line, which was eligible for an upgrade. I chose a new 2GB data plan for this.
-On friday, do I need to activate the iPhone on my dad's line first? Or do I need to make the call to Verizon before activating? Does it even matter?

I will be reactivating his dumb phone back to his line, and subsequently dropping his (now unnecessary) data plan all in the same call. Is that possible?

Thanks guys!

No, the ULD plan is tied to her number.

This is essentially my question as well.

This is essentially my question as well.

Looks like we have the answer. Per Verizon chat. I actually don't think it matters, as both should probably work. But I think I'll do it this way.
