Is there a fee to cancel the plan on the dumb phone line once you transfer the IP5 to the unlimited line?
No, data plan can be dropped without any fees as long as you put the dumb phone back to its line. This was discussed earlier in the thread.

Thanks. Seems like this is a nobrainer then.

Maybe you should update the original post with all the questions that keep getting asked? Wading through 12 pages takes a while.

Nope! That I can say with 100% certainty as I've done it before.

But you do need to keep some level of service on the "dumb" phone line correct?

If not there has to be an ETF otherwise how would Verizon be paid back for the iPH5

Yes basic service is required to remain on the dumb phone line or you will pay an ETF, just the data can be canceled without penalty.

Ok I'm sure I was just reading the direction of the post wrong.

I want Verizon to keep this "loophole" open for about a month. I plan on trying to add a sub account to my individual talk/text ULD plan. I want to add the 2gb for $30/10$ talk plan, use the subsidy on that line to get the iPH5 then make the magic switch. Drop the data on the line I added and bob's your uncle I have a shiny new iPH5

He says you CAN activate and then call, but the question is do you HAVE to activate the dumb line and then have it switched back? I would prefer to just call and have the iPhone activated on my line without the headache of the 'swap'. This is the one instance I'm a *little* happy to be getting my iPhone a week later than launch day...at least I'll know the proper protocol the day I receive it...
You might be able to, but personally I wouldn't want to risk losing unlimited data or being charged full retail price over something that takes two seconds to pro-rate your account the $29.999.

So I'm on a grandfathered FamilyShare plan and have my own unlimited data plan. We do have a "dumb phone" line that could carry out this process. My question is - I've already preordered my phone through Apple, but it doesn't deliver until Oct. 5th. Would it be possible for me to cancel my preorder (where I'd selected a 2GB/month data plan to go with my iPhone 5), not have my account changed, and then have it purchased on the dumb phone line and transferred over?

"typed in the imei to update the line to show the new upgrade then typed in the old imei of the dumbphone"

What do you mean by this? Could you go voer step by step the process you used?

For me I already have a dumbphone line, so when the iPhone comes in I will look at the box open up the website, go to the dumb phone click change device type in the IMEI of the iphone 5, log out, log back in so that the dumbphone line now shows the iphone and the 2gb data plan, change the iphone back to the dumb phone and then change my UDP line to the iphone 5 log out, then turn on the iphone and activate it, and BAM it works no problem with unlimited Data.

Yes you can do exactly that, but would need to do it over the phone, or in person at verizon

What about the nano sim? I thought that was connected to a specific phone number, so to complete the process you'd have to go to a Verizon store. I may be wrong, but it's just what I've heard.

I was told the 4g micro sim card is going to need to be switched in store because its going to be linked to the line you bought it on

The sim is not activated to anything, until the phone itself activates. The phone activating is telling the sim what number to have. So if you do it the way I spelled out, you do not activate the phone until you change the IMEI back to the UDP.

Thanks! I can cancel the order with Apple online though I'd imagine and my plan would remain unchanged?

I might see if Apple will let me change the phone number I preordered with from my line to the dumb line instead. Then I'd imagine I could just call up Verizon to switch the phone over to my line and restore the dumb phone?

Ya but you have to activate the iphone on the dumb phone line first which is going to link the sim card to that line

...to recap

So with people not reading and now turning the simple process into a bunch of what ifs and complicating the matter...let's recap.

It's seems the new question from people is whether or not transferring a line will drop you from the grandfathered UDP. The original question of using a dumbphone (non-smart phone) with an available upgrade to use the loophole of keeping the UDP is still there so we'll start with that first.

I just went to a VZ store and spoke with the manager about the "loophole" and he said it will work and everyone is aware of it. I'm assuming he's saying that everyone in the store is aware of that method of upgrading and being able to keep the UDP. He said this after I asked him if I needed to speak to him directly when the ip5 arrives or will anybody be able to help me.

Although I plan on upgrading to the ip5, I didn't pre-order because I'll wait until people actually try this and report back. So when I was speaking to the manager, I asked the manager if he was sure this method would worked and said that it will and in fact it's actually the old method of upgrading. He spoke with complete confidence and actually mentioned the "transferring" method and said that method would actually terminate the UDP. (Referring to the new question as posed by some posters)

I also asked if the ip5 using UDP will be operating under LTE of 3G and he said LTE. I also asked if I could add hotspot and he said you can for $20 and it would only be good for 1gb and not the unlimited data of the grandfathered plan.

So for those that are using the "transfer" method, I might be a little cautious because you might lose the UDP whereas if you use the dumbline to upgrade to the ip5 method, you should be fine.

Please don't hold me to this as I'm only passing on information from a store manager that sounded like he knew what he was talking about. Good luck!

Everything was good until the hotspot feature.

It is $30 a month and it is unlimited for unlimited grandfathered users.
Ask me how I know this? I have it now for my gnex.

My friend is a store manager at Verizon here in NY. He said that adding a line for the "loop hole" does work. However he did say that Verizon "audits" accounts and could back charge you full price if they found out you did this. I'm waiting till people try it before I buy like you are. I'm hoping to save myself $800

What would they audit, it's not against the contract. It's no different than selling the phone.

Of course VZ has every right to audits their accts but from what the manager was telling me, this was/is common practice so there's nothing to charge back. If in fact my acct was charged back, I would def have a serious problem. I think if all goes well and I proceed with this, I'll be sure to ask about charge backs before I sign.
