When you activate the phone online, do you still have to call the number to initiate 4G LTE service like it says in the instructions that come from Verizon? I don't have access to another line so I was curious about this before I power on the phone in case for some reason the 4G card is coded to the line I used the upgrade on

Worked for me. Xferred my upgrade to the other line when i ordered last week. Called today after getting the phone and a rep helped me activate the phone on my line. Still have unlimited data. Everything working fine. Phone is blemish free as well as far as I can tell. I didn't even have to really wait for a rep to come on the line either.

so you didn't even buy the 5 on the dummy line? You just transferred the upgrade and bought it under the Unlimited line and kept unlimited? That seems like the easiest way to do it, but also the riskiest.

I stand corrected. This just worked for me over the phone. I didnt open the box before i did it. It was crazy easy. When i went through the activation it used the dumbphone number but once it actually acyivated it went to the UDP number. Easy peasy.

sorry, but I don't follow. You must have left out some steps.

Ok it seemed to take. It said initially it wasn't compatable with my plan but then let me select it anyway. I'm doing a restore now and then will see but it looked like it may have service....fingers crossed.

I did it online by the way.

Would the process work the same way if you're not using an upgrade associated with your account at all? IE if you got an upgrade from a friend who had one and was willing to give it to you so you could keep your UDP?

Where did you find such a friend?????????? I want one.

how did you do it online if you dont mind me asking?? like once you got the phone you just went online and switched it?

Better keep checking your account. Everyone else on this thread is saying that Verizon is going to take away your UDP if you do a transfer upgrade to another line. I can't do mine until October, so hopefully things will have settled down by then with some success stories on exactly what one can or can't do.

I have learned one thing though....no matter what...

DO NOT TURN ON YOUR iPHONE 5 UNTIL YOU CONTACT VERIZON

Received phone
Activated it on dumbphone line
Cut out micro-SIM from Galaxy Nexus and put in iPhone 5
Called to switch ESN back on old phone, turned out it automatically switched
Verified unlimited data was on the iPhone 5 line

Ok it shows service but I can't seem to dial in. Does it take a bit for the switch???

Just tried to call again from my home phone and it works now....yay.

I did. Unlimited still there. I also turned my phone on when I got it. Though I waited until I was on the line with a rep. But we hadn't activated it yet.

sorry, but I don't follow. You must have left out some steps.

I just did this. So my upgrade was on my dads dummy line, on the 14th at 3am I transferred the upgrade to my unlimited line and ordered the iphone5, even accepting the terms saying I'll be going to 2GB.

SOOOOOO, during this past week I've spent many hours chatting and talking with Verizon reps and driving my self literally insane. Coming to the conclusion that on Friday (today) I'll just have call in or go to a store....

So I get my phone at 11:50am CST and literally hug the FedEx man!

Then I call Customer care and she says that I have two options since even though I used my dads dumb phone upgrade line, I stupidly upgraded my unlimited line.

Option 1: Return phone, re-order on dumb line like I should've in the first place. Then I'd be keeping my unlimited.

Option 2: Activate on my unlimited line forcing it to go to 2GB.....

While the rep was doing some research I called one of the local Verizon branches, AND I expl my situation and she says, "no problem, come on in and will get it all worked out for you".... I'm ecstatic, I hop in my car (un-showered, although did brush my teeth for the stores sake) and go down there (15 minute drive, made it in 9 minutes by doubling the speed limit) Walk in and theres literally no one there (this store is a privately owned store) and she recognized who I was and she was actually very cute. I asked her to activate it on my dads line and then cancel the 2GB on his line and activate on my unlimited line. She's like "why would we do that"....I'm thinking of great, I just drove over here to get no where.... BUUUT THEN, SHE SAYS "WE CAN KEEP YOU'RE UNLIMITED AND JUST ACTIVATE IT ON YOUR LINE"..... I'm so confused but I trusted her and obviously holding her to it if something gets messed up. Sure enough she worked her magic and I KEPT MY UNLIMITED!!!!!!!! I purchased a pair of screen protectors for $15 (basically just so happy, I bought her sales pitch) and left a happy man!!!!

I went to activate/switch device. Then I clicked on the line I want to to have the iphone 5 on. Not the one I upgraded it on. Then you type in the info it asks you for and its pretty self explanatory after that. Like I said, I did not turn on the phone before it did this.

I just did this one 2 new iphone 5's and can confirm that it does indeed work. I was able to keep unlimited.

RECAP TIME:

It seems like the step of activating on the dumb line FIRST is what is messing the most people up. Apparently this is unnecessary. The most success seems to be to just go online before you turn on the IP5 and then do the "activate or swap device" option in the menu to activate the IP5 on your UDP line, allowing you to keep the unlimited. This should make it so that your SIM doesn't get messed up AND there is no downtime on the dumbphone line.

If people who are doing it this way can keep checking in with their status as they do it this way, that would be great. I am on vacation and my iP5 is sitting at home (it just got delivered and my gf signed for it), so once I get back I should be able to know the best way :)

Thanks to everyone on the front lines!

alright so from what i gather is that you go online, go to activate or switch device, chose your current line and then activate the iphone 5 on that current line?

What's the best way to keep your unlimited data if you transferred your upgrade from your UDP line to a dumb phone line?

Is this not possible? I see so many methods, but not sure if those methods would work with this.

yes select the phone line that you want the iPhone 5 on, not the line that was eligible for the upgrade.

Type in the MEID from the back of the box,
Type in the SIM Card IICID from your receipt when prompted.

Pick a new Unlimited Data Plan or whatever plan you are using

Done

Thanks writtensarcasm. Anyone find out if it's necessary to call that toll-free number to activate 4G LTE, or does it just work?

Well I did the alternate upgrade (upgrade was on my dad's dumb phone line) and I agreed to switch to 2GB lol.... THEN, when I went to the verizon store the gal says I get to keep my unlimited AND I could've just done it from home....

Sounds like if you had an upgrade on a dumb phone and you activate it on your unlimited line, JUST DON'T TURN THE PHONE ON, either activate it online to your unlimited line or go in-store if you're really worried about it and BOOM, you keep unlimited!

So since a lot of new info has come in, I thought maybe I'd re-evaluate things for my issue:

* Grandfathered FamilyShare plan member. My line has a smartphone with unlimited data. My dad however has a "dumbphone" with an upgrade option as well.
* I didn't know about this method last Friday before I ordered on MY line. So I initially selected my phone #, did the 2 GB/month plan to replace my UDP, etc. Ended up in the Oct. 5th group.
* Read about this approach to keeping unlimited data, decided to see if I could get a iPhone 5 today at a store (and then just cancel my Apple Store order).
* This morning Apple changed my order to "Preparing for shipment" and thus now I can't cancel it online. Local Verizon store has plenty of iPhone 5s still (there was no line).

I'm stuck until my pre-order comes in it seems, so I'd given up hope on keeping my unlimited data. However, reading that some have had success going into stores and getting them to let them keep it has me wondering some questions:

1. Is it likely that I can go into a store and get them to let me keep my UDP somehow even when upgrading on my actual line? (ericsnow25's post has given me hope)

2. Is there a limitation on time/how often to switching the phone to one line and then switching it back? I was basically wondering (and admittedly I haven't read every post in the thread so not sure if someone asked it - sorry if someone did, but I've been super-occupied the last few days), is it possible to take the phone I preordered on my line, go ahead and switch it/activate it on the dumbphone line, and select 2 GB/month for the data plan on that line, but then just with the phone right back to my actual line?

For those of you that activated online -- did it reset your upgrade date for the line that you ultimately activated on or did it only reset your upgrade date for the line that you originally ordered the phone on? Thanks.

What I've learned from this thread is that the thing that makes you lose your unlimited is using the upgrade on the UDP line, even if you transfer it to another line. It seems like as long as you upgraded using another (non UDP) line's upgrade, you can go ahead and activate the phone on the UDP line without any problem, but NOT the other way around.

If I were you, Battlefish, I would try your luck getting a phone in-store using your dad's line, and just return the one that comes to you. As soon as you turn on that phone that's shipped to you you are going to lose unlimited data and have no way to get it back.

So not only did it allow me to select unlimited data by doing it this way it also said I was eligible for an unlimited data promotion for 23.99? Did anyone else get this? It seems way too good to be true?
