Anyone have any idea the best way to do this if adding 2 new lines of service? It seems like the i5 would have to be activated on those new lines to keep the subsidized price? Or no?

Basically, if I first activate a dumbphone on one of my new lines of service, will it trigger a full price cost for the i5?

What I've learned from this thread is that the thing that makes you lose your unlimited is using the upgrade on the UDP line, even if you transfer it to another line. It seems like as long as you upgraded using another (non UDP) line's upgrade, you can go ahead and activate the phone on the UDP line without any problem, but NOT the other way around.

If I were you, Battlefish, I would try your luck getting a phone in-store using your dad's line, and just return the one that comes to you. As soon as you turn on that phone that's shipped to you you are going to lose unlimited data and have no way to get it back.

WRONG, I HAVE JUST CONFIRMED THIS, LET ME BREAK IT DOWN TO HELP ALL OF YOU OUT...

My situation:

Family share 700 min with a corporate discount. 2 iPhones on UDP, 2 dumb phones

2 upgrades available were 1 iPhone and 1 dumb phone. Pre-ordered last Friday by transferring the 1 iPhone upgrade to 1 dumb phone and ordering 2 iPhone 5's with 2GB data pkgs on each dumb phone number

Got both phones today, didn't even open them, brought them to the store. Very helpful VZ manager activated both new iPhones ON THE DUMB PHONE LINES. She didn't even turn the new iPhones on first (not sure if this matters). Then we turned the iPhones on. She then transferred the equipment (2 new iPhones) to my current iPhone lines with UDP. When she did this she used NEW sim cards, said it was necessary (take that for what it's worth). Old sims were tossed. iPhones were now working on LTE and their phone numbers were on both of the old iPhone lines (UDP lines). Then she linked up the dumb phones back with their numbers (re-activated them). I then had to call my in-laws and have them pushed *228 then option 1. After that their dumb phones were back to normal and numbers were as they should be. Just got home and checked my account online, new iPhones are showing up with UNLIMTED DATA. Dumb phones are as they should be with PAY PER MB USED. Looks like this is a success, thank goodness for great VZW customer service. I'm very happy and will remain a VZW customer for a long time (as long as nothing changes) :)

BTW, getting mid 20's download speeds, zoom!

Good luck to you all!

yes select the phone line that you want the iPhone 5 on, not the line that was eligible for the upgrade.

Type in the MEID from the back of the box,
Type in the SIM Card IICID from your receipt when prompted.

Pick a new Unlimited Data Plan or whatever plan you are using

Done

heres another question where is the receipt? does it come in the box?

I am honestly very confused.

Here's my situation:

I have an individual plan with unlimited data. I have an upgrade available October 10th. I don't have a "dumb phone" or "dummy line", or anything like that. It's just my iPhone 4. That's it.

What is the detailed process for me to keep unlimited when I get the i5?

My mom also may want to get on my account by getting an iPhone (doesn't have to be the 5, and she doesn't care about data, as she hardly uses any). Is there a way for me to continue getting unlimited data while also adding my mom on my plan somehow? Or is this going to be too complicated?

I'm in the same boat. No mom issues though. Not sure of the cost of adding a line yet. I have heard anywhere from $10-$40 a month.

This would be easy for you. Add a new line to your account for your mom, pick 2GB data, order the iPhone 5 as the phone. Once it comes, activate it, then swap your phone and your mom's phone. She'll have 2GB data on your 4, you'll have unlimited on the 5.

Everything on this thread only applies to grandfathered family plans. Upgrading a line subsidized will force you to switch to tiered data. Adding a line to your account will require you to go to the share everything plan.

The above reply is incorrect, sorry - adding a line only works for a family plan, not an individual plan.

Your only option to keep unlimited data is to pay full unsubsidized price for the iphone 5.

it depends on what plan you have if you have the 900 minute one right now you can switch to the 700 minute plan (if you get the right rep) its only 10 bucks.. if you have the 450 minute plan then its most costly

I'm about to attempt this online as it sounds like this is working. Once you activate the iPhone 5 on the original unlimited line, does the old phone (in my case an iPhone 4s) get transferred to the dumb phone line, which is the line I bought the iPhone 5 on. Then can I just get rid of the 2GB data plan and deactive the iphone 4s, so I can sell it?

Can anyone confirm they transferred there upgrade from an unlimited line to an existing dummy line and activated the ip5 on the unlimited and didn't lose unlimited?

Okay just did the Verizon online activation and was extremely painless.

Step 1 is Choose the Activate or Switch Device
Step 2 Select the phone number you want to activate the iphone on
Step 3 Enter the Imei/Meid number found on your box
Step 4 enter the ICCID number for your sim card also found on the box
It may say your data plan is not compatible and to choose a new one but mine still had the unlimited selected and i just pushed next.
Basically after that you can turn on the phone, my phone was showing the original number i ordered it one when i turned it on and seemed like it would activate on that but it didn't. The data plan on the dumb phone line also never even activated it seems so i didnt have to cancel that.

I think this has been confirmed previously in the thread - you WILL lose unlimited data if you transfer the upgrade.

Wouldn't adding a new line to my account for my mom force us into the share everything family plan?

If not, then can you clarify a bit on the last step, which is to activate the i5, and swapping it my current 4? What does this actually mean (do I need to swap out sim cards, or change some setting online?)

Sorry, I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to this kind of stuff. :(

I transferred the upgrade already and the phones at home waiting for me. I still have unlimited on my line (just checked)

I should be able to activate it now on my unlimited line .. just trying to verify

Sorry, yes, my bad. I'd forgotten that single plans can't add a line now without moving to share everything. This whole thread only works if you already have an old Family Share plan. Sorry bud :(

So, if I add a line, it will force me into a shared family plan, and therefore I will lose my unlimited? :(

Ugh, there really is no way for me to keep my unlimited outside of paying for the full unsubsidized price (with or without my mom on the account)?

You can add a line but for $40 a month for a basic phone. Not $10

Activating online didn't work for me. I got a message that the SIM could not be activated and I have to call customer service.

Try again, as someone who has swapped phones using this tool a lot, that sometimes happens, and if you try again, it will probably go through.

Unless you know someone who also has Verizon and is eligible for an upgrade and they don't care if you use theirs to get your phone.

no, you can add a line to your account without changing you data plan or being shared everything. thats what i did.

So TdubyaC, Did your dummy phone still show the message you mentioned earlier.....something about it's waiting for activation? I imagine it just went away when you activated your IP5 straight to your unlimited line?...hopefully
