It all went well until I re activated the dumb phone which turned out to be a "feature" phone and had to add a $10 data plan

So for lines 2 and 3 of your illustration, you purchased single line nationwide Talk plans for $40 each before discount and also purchased 2 Gb of data for each at $30 a piece. Did you do that over the phone or in store? Didn't they think that was strange?
Then you called a CS rep and had them move all your lines to one family Talk plan and chose 1000 pooled text messages for 2 of the lines. I assume that was line 1 and 2. Didn't you have texting on line 1 to begin with or were you forced to change since it was all one family plan?
Do I really need the dummy phone if I already have the old Droid Incredible? What is the optimal order of activating these devices? What is your monthly cost? Thanks for taking me by the hand through this. I always said they would have to pry my unlimited data out of my cold dead hands.

I purchased one new iPhone through Verizon.com and the other through Apple.com. Because I had an individual plan, my only options while ordering online on were to convert to a Share Everything plan or new individual plans. I spoke with Verizon beforehand to make sure I could convert them to a family plan so I felt comfortable signing up for 2 new individual contracts.

I don't think there's really an optimal order of activating the phones. You just can't move a phone onto another line before deactivating it. And you do need a dumb phone because the Droid Incredible will require a data plan.

Here is my total monthly cost:
$50 base charge for 700 shared minutes
$29.97 access charge for 3 lines
$20 1000 messages for 2 phones
$29.99 ULD for line 1
$30 2GB data for line 2
= $159.96

----------

It all went well until I re activated the dumb phone which turned out to be a "feature" phone and had to add a $10 data plan

Call Verizon CS, they should be able to take the data off that line. I called and they took it off with no questions.

Or you can try going into the settings online and block all services. Not sure if this will remove the data automatically, though.

I went on Verizonwireless.com and signed into my account. However, I do not see the option of signing up with the nationwide plan - I only see Share everything and prepaid. Am I missing something?

As long as you can get the apple store to sign you up on a nationwide plan, everything should work fine. After you get that, the rest is through Verizon.

And if I'm already on a nationwide plan I'm golden aka set for life? :)

What is your current plan? You can't sign up for a new line on a nationwide plan unless you already have a nationwide line.

Yeah the new share everything plans are the ones you want to stay away from :)

I ran into a snag while trying to move my old 4S onto our other line. The other line in question is the one I used to order my 5S to keep unlimited data. When I go to "Switch Device" I see this message:

Is this your New Device?

Apple® iPhone® 5s 32GB in Space Gray

Please realize I have already activated the 5S on that line, deactivated, went to Verizon to get a SIM card for my line, and activated it once again.

It lists the phone number and all the details about the phone, with no option to say no. Do I have to wait a certain amount of time before I can activate a different phone on that line? When I click next, it begins the activation process of the 5S, which I do NOT want to do.

Edit: Never mind. To my surprise *228 is still in use. I had no idea.

Here is my plan - what gives? Do you think I should try to work with a CS over the phone? Thanks for any advice.

What the... you're right! I have unlimited and eligible for upgrade. When I went through the process to get a new subsidized phone with the upgrade on this line, it allowed me to keep my unlimited data. This is definitely new and is pretty big deal if it's a change Verizon just made.

Curious what would happen if someone attempt to upgrade using this "site glitch." Would Verizon eliminated the unlimited data plan?

I'd be curious if it's an unadvertised change they're going to make official after a ton of people upgraded their old 4S to a subsidized 5s and lost their unlimited.

yes I was the one who posted it on hofo :D I really doubt it's a glitch since it's been working like this since monday

Nope :) most are able to complete the upgrade fully without incident and retaining their unlimited data plans. You even get confirmation email about the upgrade and retaining your plan as is. !! Now it doesn't work for everyone and it doesn't work on every phone for some but it does work unconditionally for others :) but as always try at your own risk.

Thanks for posting it :) and I do hope it's permanent policy change. On another subject would you happen to be a supporter of Alabama? I don't like them ;) ....

I wonder if Verizon got sick of people using the upgrade tricks and quietly changed their policy?

Recap:

I had a family plan with UDP on IP4 (A) and a dumb phone (B).
Both have upgrades.

I ordered via Verizon online using the upgrade on dumb phone.
I got the 5s today and followed these directions using Verizon online.
http://www.dimascorner.com/2013/iphone5s-upgrade/

Basically, activate on dumb phone line first.

At no point did I ever take the SIM out.

5s activated fine on dumb phone line. When I went to put the dumb phone back on that phone line, it made me select $10 for data for the dumb phone. I guess the LG Revere wasn't as dumb as I thought :) Fine, I selected it and reactivated the dumb phone. Dial the *228 to activate the dumb phone and press 1 when prompted.

Next, I activated the 5s onto the UDP line. No problems. entered IMEI# and the SIM# (Look at the packing slip you got. There's no need to take out the SIM) Be sure to turn off the phone before doing all this.

After everything is entered, Verizon online will tell you to activate the 5s (Turn it on!). Everything should boot up fine while it searches for LTE. Then you restore on your iTurns and Boom...UDP on an 5s!

I then went back to my Verizon online account and chatted w/ a CSR. She took off the $10 data charge on the dumb phone and also verified that I still had UDP.

Done.

bc979: Use the SIM that came with your 5s!!!

I did almost this exact thing, except for one difference. I added a new line which I am actually using to give to my mom. Bought a new 5S yesterday via Apple.com and in-store pickup. Went home and activated it on the new line that I bought it on. Made one test call and then went online to VZW and switched the device with a RAZR that I had laying around. I, too, was made to add a $10/mo data package for the RAZR, but when I called VZW, they said it was a mistake and removed it immediately. I then switched out my 5 for the 5S on my line via the VZW site, and voila, I have a subsidized 5S on my ULD line, a 5 for sale on Gazelle for $300 and a pink RAZR for my mom for $9.99/mo.

There was no need to swap SIMs or acquire a new one.

Thanks to all on this thread for the insight, as it made it simple as cake. My only regret was not ordering one on launch day, although it sounds as if I may have gotten one quicker using the in-store pickup option anyway.

:D

My only regret is not taking advantage of this past weekends "Site Glitch" and having to go through all this stress and research on keeping our UDP.

Just by looking at my data use for the past week, I feel entirely justified in the effort to keep UDP since my data use did go UP. Having ultra-fast speed on LTE IS ADDICTING!

I want to thank all the members here for sharing their experiences with everyone! :D

Quick question on this scenario.

I want to order the 5s and put it on my wife's line, activate it then switch it to my UDP line.

I have an iphone 4 now without sim. Won't the new sim in the 5s be activated to her number only? How would I activate it on my phone line?

Wondering if I need a new sim card for that.

thanks.

I didn't have to do anything with the sim, however, I'm coming from a 5 to a 5S, but I still don't think that matters.

I might be getting a Space Grey iPhone 5S (64GB). Not sure yet. But I have 2 lines available for upgrade.

Decisions, decisions.

I have unlimited plan with Verizon. Upgraded to 5s using one of my other lines, then swapped out phones with no problem.

Question - Does using the "Personal Hotspot" effect the grandfathered data plans? Never done that before.

Hotspot is a "feature" that you can add/remove as you wish, without affecting the unlimited data plan. I've actually added it many times for a day or two and only got charged the prorated amount on my bill, which ends up being approx $1/day since it's a $30/month feature.
