I love apple, but this is really one bad move on their part. It would have cost them nothing to throw in one adapter. I know this is cliche to say, but it is very true in this case....STEVE would have put it in the box!

Considering the ones you can order won't be shipped until October, it might not be down to cost. They might have realised they wouldn't be able to produce enough to put one in the box from launch.

A bit upset at the adapter showing up for free.

I mean, it wasn't put there by mistake. It was typed up somehow by an apple employee.

Then they say our mistake for putting it up, heres a 29.99 fee if you want it thoe.

WOW!!! How effing cheap and GREEDY of a company you are APPLE!!!!
AMAZING how people will continue to support this behavior from a company that continues to show it's GREEDY ways. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! MS is giving over 90,000 of their full time employees a Surface Tablet and a Windows Phone 8 device. YOU WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING APPLE!!!!

Bad move on their part. Its not like they don't already know that people want them to include an adapter, so to make the mistake of saying they will is especially bad PR

Remember when Steve gave original iPhones to all retail employees who had been with the company for more than a year? I wonder if Steve would've allowed this to happen.

it's sad to see that the adapter won't be included with the iphone 5. It would make sense for them to include the adapter in the box of the iphone 5 and make it an optional purchase for an ipod nano or ipod touch. just like how the power adapter comes with the iphone and not with the ipod nano or ipod touch.

right!?!?

Concise and correct. £30 for this is a joke, that's almost a console game.

Couldn't agree more. 30 quid is taking the piss even by Apple's standards. And forget the 'Steve would have put one in the box' BS. He wouldn't. He was around when they decided to no longer bundle remotes with laptops. Let the man rest in peace for f's sake.

Sorry if I have been wrongly confused by this, but in my countriy's Apple store (United Kingdom)

Lightning cable: ≈ 24.37 US dollars

Lightning adapter: ≈ 40.62 US dollars

Why would someone buy the adapter to use their old cable, when they can get a whole new cable for less?

Again sorry if I have been mistaken please don't "flame" me :)
(I know people on the internet like to do this when someone makes a trivial mistake). :p

Because some people have a dock that plays music or a car adapter where going to a USB end would do you know good. Take a look at some of the accessories in the Apple store where a USB cable would do you know good compared to the adapter.

Most people won't actually need the adapter, so why waste the resources to produce and package 50 million of them for free?

If it was "in there by accident" then obviously Apple intended to provided a free adapter at some point.

Must have backtracked

It's probably pressure to keep up margins. It will be interesting to see the tear down of the phone and the estimated bill of materials compared to the 4S. The adapter is about 95% profit for Apple (all that kind of stuff is - that's why Best Buy pushes Monster Cables). If we find that the new iPhone costs about $10-15 more to build, that's where the adapter comes in.

Aww shucks? Aww darn? really? REALLY?!?!
That's all some of you have to say? You know very well if any other company did this, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Microsoft, Nokia; if ANY of these companies made such a greedy move, you would be all over it calling them out on it. But for some reason, so many Apple die hards refuse to see this for what it is, PURE GREED!!! How can any self thinking, self respecting individual allow themselves to be used and abused in this way. You know your a blind follower when....

The adapter should most certainly be included--$30 for a stupid dongle is insane (and $40 for their USB cable is even more insane). I think Apple is making a real jackass move by switching connectors just to nickel-and-dime people on dongles. Apple just gave the entire accessory market for iOS devices the finger and rendered all of the existing docks, speaker systems, chargers/batteries, etc... useless for iPhone 5 buyers.

Does the new port/cable have some sort of Apple proprietary crypto-module in it that prevents the use of 3rd party dongles and accessories?

I don't know; as someone who used to have to buy a whole new set of chargers every time I switched phones, I've been a happy Apple guy that this is the first time since switching to the iPhone that I've been faced with the possibility. If Apple was trying to "nickel-and-dime people" they'd have changed the connector every single time. That's not the reason for the change; there have been announced, reasonable explanations for the change in the adapter.

Furthermore, the reason the adapter is expensive is because there's actually a chip inside that helps 8 pins do more than 8 things.

I'm not saying that Apple isn't going to benefit from these changes, but the idea that they did it just to screw consumers is blatantly untrue.

If people keep up the pressure, maybe they will relent, just as they did with the iPhone 4 antenna. The best thing is to send a complaint to Apple through their site or e-mail.

£30?!?!?! What exchange rate are Apple working to? $29 = £30?! Yeah...sure.

I've been wondering the same thing. The prices don't make sense.

Most people won't actually need the adapter, so why waste the resources to produce and package 50 million of them for free?

And that's all you have to say? You find this practice perfectly OK? You don't want to call Apple out on this? So if you say "why waste the resources to produce and package 50 million of them for free?", then how about Apple give those that want one for free? How about giving people an option to order one for free when they buy an iPhone 5. Your reasoning is flawed. Stop making excuses for this greedy company. Despicable.

They should have just put a bucket full in each apple store and let people help themselves. For free for maybe a week or 2, then start charging for them but I'm amazed that they think anyone would pay more than £10 without it being a bitter and painful transaction. I don't mind that I shelled out £599 for a phone this morning but I draw the line at £30 for a f@cking adaptor. Microchip or no microchip, it's a ridiculous price for what it is.

Agreed! We need to start something w/Apple...

I mean we're not paying $49 for a nano, these phones are costing us a few hundred bucks, not to count the wireless plans that come with them.

If the adapter was only $9.99 I don't think this would be as big of an issue. But $29 for a plastic adapter and $39 for the same thing with a bit of a cable attached is quite expensive. I was hoping that since Apple's MagSafe 2 adapter was only $9.99 that they had finally decided to stop with suck expensive adapters. Then again the Magsafe Adapter is a tiny piece of metal with five contacts, and this adapter is a tad more complex.

Either way I'd love it if it were cheaper. Let's hope 3rd party manufactures are already working on their own version of Lightning cables & adapters. They'll probably be cheaper too. I can't wait for Monoprice.com to make some. ;)

Agreed! I live in the US and never saw a screen that one was included. We need to start something with Apple and DEMAND at the VERY LEAST to know their cost for the 30-pin adapter and 30-pin cable!! One should be included with the iPhone 5 for the first six-twelve months while third parties catch up to the new design!!! (don't put them in the box, duh, include it separately with a note that this is to accommodate early adopters until such and such date). We need to DEMAND this from a company that has billions in profits they don't know what to do with!!!

Don't get me wrong, Apple is a company that knows how to do business and I respect them, in a bad economy they did not dip with the rest:apple:, however, the pricing for these adapters is quite extreme, to the point of gouging when you look at what price most people are paying for the device itself IMO ($30-40 on top of $200-400 is too much to expect, especially when we'll still need to get auto chargers, cases, etc., etc.). And there is no way they are not making at least 50% profit, more likely 80% or more on these adapters.

If you look at the first link at the bottom you will see that, last quarter, Apple reported they have close to $8 BILLION in cash reserve! They can afford to include the damn adapter!!!

NOTE: It will take SOME TIME for other manufacturers to make adapters that will work properly. The 30-pin connector had digital and analog signals going through it. The 8-pin is proprietary digital and requires DAC (digital-analog converters) to work at all with other devices, and, even then, what it works with is limited. Fortunately, the one plus is that we will be able to plug right into USB devices that will be compatible.

NOTE 2: For those in other countries that have that text that shows the adapter is included, legally they HAVE to include it, they can't just say "oh that was a mistake".

(I just think they need to be reasonable about this, NO ONE wants to pay $30 for an adapter to connect to the device they already connect to, it does not cost anywhere near that, I guarantee you, they are only doing it because they can get away with it, so let us not let them get away with it!).
