And what if the battery life isn't as good as stated, and is as bad as the iPhone 4S's???
Of which I often have to charge at least once during the day to get me by!
I will have to carry around my one cable that comes with it and keep track of it with my life! I have ordered another cable so at least I can have one in my car but it is backordered for 2-3 weeks!
Here's hoping the new battery has longer life because my 4S was HORRID!
All my custom docks will no longer work but I knew that going in. STILL SAD ABOUT IT THOUGH. :(

My big question is how the hell did someone get a hold of an Apple rep? They took the chat feature off their site and their phone has a pretty annoying message about expecting a lot of calls so they're just ignoring all of them.

There's a large markup on everything (not just apple products). It's unlikely including one would have added to the retail price, it just would have taken some money away from apple

And as a shareholder I have no interest in that happening either.

You include things in the box that most or all customers need. If they don't include earbuds with the iPad why would they include an adapter lots of people don't need?

Damnit Apple, a free adaptor would have scored you a lot of points.

Of course that doesn't matter, as we are all buying the stupid phone anyway!

We are such lousy consumers.

Apple is like an abusive spouse... We keep making excuses for them and going back every time.

It's probably pressure to keep up margins. It will be interesting to see the tear down of the phone and the estimated bill of materials compared to the 4S. The adapter is about 95% profit for Apple (all that kind of stuff is - that's why Best Buy pushes Monster Cables). If we find that the new iPhone costs about $10-15 more to build, that's where the adapter comes in.

Margins?

I would agree if this was a component increase of $50. Hell, even $5!

But all well know that this free adapter costs below $1 a piece to make over seas

That's a terrible analogy and a slap in the face to people who've been abused. What's with the entitlement for a $20 adapter you don't even need? If you're really hurting over 20 bucks, maybe you shouldn't be buying a new iPhone ever year.

Sorry if I have been wrongly confused by this, but in my countriy's Apple store (United Kingdom)

Lightning cable: ≈ 24.37 US dollars

Lightning adapter: ≈ 40.62 US dollars

Why would someone buy the adapter to use their old cable, when they can get a whole new cable for less?

which lightning cable? There is a lightning cable to USB, that is probably the lower cost, and that is the one they include with the iPhone 5, this is just to purchase additional cables.

in the US store you can get:
Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) (this is the cable adapter) $39
Lightning to 30-pin Adapter $29
Lightning to USB Cable $19 (also one included with iPhone 5)

Total horse **** they are not including one. And to charge 30 bucks for it is just beyond price rape.

The per unit cost is prolly some where near the .50 area. 10 bucks is MORE then enough for it.

Apple is just using it to there advantage to charge the hell out of people.

Total BS.

Sorry, but count me as one who feels shafted by this as being greed; as we ALL need at least one of these to conform to our current apple ecosystem.

Nobody who owns a iOS device (i bet), will be able to survive without this adapter that is Overpriced. 9.99, ok- 30- pisses me off.

I'll survive just fine without one. Guess that makes me a "nobody."

In my opinion, as us Brits had to pay an extra £30 for the 16GB model than usual (£499 for the 4S, yet the 32 and 64 5's are the same price as the 4S was) I think this free adapter should be given :D I hope they honour this, as I have a screen capture of it on my computer, false advertising :D Too high price for an adapter, as much as I love Apple :(

And that's all you have to say? You find this practice perfectly OK? You don't want to call Apple out on this? So if you say "why waste the resources to produce and package 50 million of them for free?", then how about Apple give those that want one for free? How about giving people an option to order one for free when they buy an iPhone 5. Your reasoning is flawed. Stop making excuses for this greedy company. Despicable.

There's nothing else TO say. You're the one being greedy here, by DEMANDING they just give you for FREE, this little gizmo that only certain people even need. You're already getting a supercomputer that people couldn't dream of a decade ago, that fits in your pocket for $200. WTF else do you want?

Why I am glad I bought the 4s last year

With so many changes -- nanosim, replacement of sync port, larger size, LTE -- it will take a while to trickle out into the marketplace and be stable.

Thank you iPhone 5 buyers for taking care of all the bugs for me! Me, I like the S release iPhones, AKA the bug fix polished release.

LOL, guess people have forgotten the old rule, never buy a first gen new/re-designed Apple product...

One adapter should have been included in addition to the new cable.

Do you realize how much this would cost them when you ship millions and millions of these things? Apple knows customers will be happy regardless so they might as well focus on profitability to keep the share holders happy.

It's annoying, yes. I'm just going to suck it up for a few weeks. If I have to carry around my lightning cable, so be it. Rather than pay another $30 to Apple and whine about it, I'm simply going to wait until the cheap knockoffs are available on monoprice, ebay, etc. Then I'll pick a few up for next to nothing.

I doubt it's about cost, but resources instead. There is literally no reason to build a hundred million of these things if on a fraction will ever come out of the box.

In other words, the same thing you did with the old cable for the last decade. :)

If it was $20 it might not be as big of a deal, but, as it is, it is $30-40, not $20. $20 is what another lightning to USB cable costs. This does not connect to our Car audio, etc. that we NEED the $30-40 adapter for! AND I don't buy a new iPhone every year, it has been 3 1/2 years for me.

...
To those who say "If you can afford the cost of an iPhone you can afford to pay for the adapter": SHUT THE F UP! That adapter probably costs Apple less than $5 and they are charging $30-40, this is outrageous! It costs enough to buy a new phone with all the extras you need: getting a car charger, case, etc., etc.

I'd rather have the adapter than the headphones which will never come out of the packaging just like all my other ones.

This is a good point; that 'saves on resources' BS that some people spout is just wooly non-sense... I still have every pair of headphones from every ipod / iphone I've ever bought. All gathering dust in a drawer still in their little plastic packaging sheath. Mostly because they're crap headphones.

Ditto that! I never use the earbuds, they suck. They should have like 10 accessories that you can choose a certain number of to be included in the box! i.e. Case, charger, adapter, thats all I really need!

After owning a RAZR MAXX for 6 months I have forgotten what bad battery life is like.

I'd like to think tht if I'm paying 999 for a phone that WON'T work with my existing accessories the very least apple could do is throw in an adapter to facilitate tbis issue. Rather they want to charge me $40 for it.

I think I'll just wait until an aftermarket accessories are released. As much as I like their products, I hate their nickel and diming me for every little thing, especially a condition they introduced into their "eco-system".
