Two years ago, Apple caved and gave out free cases to early adopters. I bet they do the same thing here.

I can understand them not giving them out for free with every order in that it would be a waste in that not everyone would even need one, but for gawd's sake, at least make them cheap! NOT $30! They could even make more profit if they made them cheaper because*MORE* people would be apt to buy one or even two or three! JEEZ!
Not to mention the reputation they are going to get for being greedy!
People don't like GREEDY! I think this is a very bad marketing agenda.

Whats confusing? Apple changed the adapter so none of our current cables or adapters will work. Instead of throwing in 2-3 of the 20cent adapters with each iPhone purchase, or even charging a reasonable $4.99, they are charging $29 or $39 and doing it with a straight face. Shocking, but not unexpected.

Apple PR should now step up and issue the following statement....

"Hey everyone, we made a boo boo. We're human and boo boos happen.

So, to put this right; as an act of good faith to our customers and by way of an apology for our boo boo, we're going to give everyone that pre orders, or has pre ordered the iPhone 5, an adaptor.

Right up to 11.59pm next Thursday, if you order an iPhone 5, we'll give you an adaptor, and by the way-we're genuinely sorry this happened"
.

IMHO of course.

WOW!!! How effing cheap and GREEDY of a company you are APPLE!!!!
AMAZING how people will continue to support this behavior from a company that continues to show it's GREEDY ways. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! MS is giving over 90,000 of their full time employees a Surface Tablet and a Windows Phone 8 device. YOU WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING APPLE!!!!

Microsoft has to give them away to get more users on WP platform. After getting TWO free WP devices including the Lumia 900 I am still using an iPhone as my main device. Ecosystem is not there yet and won't be until comon kernel codebase in WP8 takes off if ever.

I'm glad we're not getting them, what a waste of plastic that most people will throw in a drawer and never use. At least they're being a little environmentally friendly.

If it was $20 it might not be as big of a deal, but, as it is, it is $30-40, not $20. $20 is what another lightning to USB cable costs. This does not connect to our Car audio, etc. that we NEED the $30-40 adapter for! AND I don't buy a new iPhone every year, it has been 3 1/2 years for me.

...
To those who say "If you can afford the cost of an iPhone you can afford to pay for the adapter": SHUT THE F UP! That adapter probably costs Apple less than $5 and they are charging $30-40, this is outrageous! It costs enough to buy a new phone with all the extras you need: getting a car charger, case, etc., etc.

deal with it bro. study hard in school to get a better job so you don't have to sweat 20 bucks.

Just another example of Apple being cheap and forcing users to convert. The first iPhone included a dock which was really nice. Now they are moving to a better connector but ignoring the HUGE installed base of the old iPhone connector and basically turning their back on all the customers.
Typical Apple; "we're moving forward and we don't care how many legacy devices you have. Deal with it"

Add another $30 to the most valuable company in the world.

You'd think after "bumpergate" Apple could have thrown us a bone here.

I'd usually be the one to defend Apple, but I was surprised that not only is it not included but its $30. That's alot for what it is. It should be more like $10.

BUT It's fine. They sell chargers for $1 on ebay. They sell cases on ebay for $1 (they are decent cases too). I'm sure I can get a converter for less then $5 on ebay too.

Sorry if I have been wrongly confused by this, but in my countriy's Apple store (United Kingdom)

Lightning cable: ≈ 24.37 US dollars

Lightning adapter: ≈ 40.62 US dollars

Why would someone buy the adapter to use their old cable, when they can get a whole new cable for less?

Again sorry if I have been mistaken please don't "flame" me :)
(I know people on the internet like to do this when someone makes a trivial mistake). :p

Adapter would be needed for specialized docks or car stereo integration.

i demand answers!

this was originally included but one of these big wig apple execs overruled the inclusion.

THIS IS MADNESS!

Whilst it isn't a great situation for those that have docking stations and existing cables, what would you have preferred Apple to do? I mean really?

They could have kept the 30 pin connector but times change, technology moves on. We could all still be using serial & parallel ports, floppy drives and ISA connected graphics cards and the modem computer wouldn't have progressed nearly as much as it has.

They could supply a free adapter to help soften the blow, but think about that for a minute. By using it you will be extending the centre of gravity of the phone. I doubt my current dock connector will still stand up if I used the adapter. In fact I'm not sure the connector in the dock won't snap of! It's simply not that practical to convert them.

But I'm sure there are somethings it'll work ok with.. and supplying one adapter will make a few people happy. But then you'll get the people who need two and they'll complain that two weren't given away... and the people who need three, four, etc.

So yeah. It's annoying. But its life and the price you pay for progress.

In my opinion Apple know it's not practical and is why they aren't given them away. I'm surprised they have made them at all, other than the micro USB one to comply with EU laws.

Lol I was just thinking Adaptergate or Lightninggate.

Every release of an iPhone there is something to fix. It's like they do this on purpose and then send out free adapters to show how great their customer service is and how much they care about us. Can't wait for my free plug!

1st is - $100pricereductionsosorrygate
2nd - Antennagate/bumpergate
3rd - Adaptergate.

I'm certain there will be some iPod touch 5th gen mishap and Loopgate is next.

You also forgot the change in charger with the 3G. Granted this was more of a safety issue but I still got a new adapter out of it :p

The adapter should most certainly be included--$30 for a stupid dongle is insane (and $40 for their USB cable is even more insane). I think Apple is making a real jackass move by switching connectors just to nickel-and-dime people on dongles. Apple just gave the entire accessory market for iOS devices the finger and rendered all of the existing docks, speaker systems, chargers/batteries, etc... useless for iPhone 5 buyers.

Does the new port/cable have some sort of Apple proprietary crypto-module in it that prevents the use of 3rd party dongles and accessories?

Nah....they switched connectors to make your **** thinner. Sounds good to me. The dock connector was the thickest thing left apparently. The revenue from the sale of adapters is just a bonus.

After owning a RAZR MAXX for 6 months I have forgotten what bad battery life is like.

You've probably also forgotten what a nice screen looks like. ;)

The iPhone battery life isn't bad as far as I've noticed. Except where I have signal issues at work, it works great and lasts a full day.

Although I bought one right away to avoid issues. . . I agree it would have been a smart pr move just to include one. Maybe it'll be like the cases on the iPhone 4, where they end up giving them away / offering a refund for a short time after introduction.

Doubtful though. It's been a nice decade of mostly compatible products :) . .

I actually read on the adapters page on the Apple Store that it will not send iPod information through the adapter. Essentially say that this adapter will only be usable for charging? If that's the case then $30 just to use a charger when I can buy a new charger with the new adapter in it is just ridiculous.

Does anyone know if the included charger is a lightning to power plug or if it is a lightning to USB with a power plug adapter, like it has been with every other iPhone?

If it was "in there by accident" then obviously Apple intended to provided a free adapter at some point.

Must have backtracked

Yep, they realised how much extra cash they can screw repeat customers for.

Greed, greed, greed.....

I have been an Apple fanboy since 1999 but have recently become disenchanted with the way the company is going, a reflection of the way America itself is going, to hell with the average person....look below, are these people any different from the greedy bankers? Are they really worth this kind of money?
This is why you are paying ridiculous amounts for adapters etc (oh, sorry I forgot, it's called free enterprise!).

And that's why I won't be buying anything Apple. Sad really...

As part of their recent promotions to senior vice president status, Apple executives Craig Federighi and Dan Riccio have each received stock grants currently worth well over $50 million.

According to new filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple's SVP of Mac Software and Engineering Craig Federighi and SVP of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio were awarded 75,000 shares of restricted company stock worth $50.62 million at current prices.

The filing, first reported by CNET, specifies the stocks will vest at three separate intervals over the next four years, the first being a batch of 25,000 on Dec. 23, 2013. The remaining units will vest equally on Apr. 23, 2015 and Aug. 23, 2016.

Federighi and Riccio were promoted to Apple's Executive Team in late August, alongside news that formerly retired hardware chief Bob Mansfield would return to the company in an

Also noted in the SEC filing was the sale of 25,000 Apple shares worth approximately $16.6 million by board member Mickey Drexler, who is also the chairman and CEO of J. Crew.

Apple usually offers restricted stock units to its executives as an incentive to remain with the company and to foster consistent performance. In March, Apple CEO Tim Cook, CFO Peter Oppenheimer, and SVP Phil Schiller netted a total of about $150 million in vested stock granted in 2008.

Yeah, this isn't just a typo. This is more like, "let's go ahead and include one for free"......web guy rushes to include the note...."On the other hand, not everyone needs one and we can make more money if we don't.....where'd that web guy go?".....web buy busy playing COD completely misses note to reverse the included text.
