They should have included one as a goodwill gesture.

But then again hardly gonna entice people to adopt a new standard if they have a free adapter to use old gear.

Apple is no longer the start up company and they can't just give a free adapter just to tug some heartstrings. How would they determine who didn't buy the connector because they read the small print during ordering?

It would have been good to lower the price of the adapter to a reasonable price at least for this one generation of iPhone for the people who do happen to have docks or accessories since I believe people who do have accessories with a 30-pin connector are in the minority.

IMO, they should honour what they said regardless.

And as a shareholder I have no interest in that happening either.

Totally moronic comment. Apple is already considered the new Microsoft: an evil, greedy company. It is no longer cool to own Apple phones, and moves like this one drive people away to Android or Metro even quicker.

As a shareholder, you should realize that Apple can make much more money with happy customers who buy phones, music, apps, services, and useful accessories than a few millions from selling these adapters way overpriced.

On the other hand, pissing everyone off, getting bad press, even worse public image, lower market share and less sales is a matter of billions.

Almost everyone has bought at least a second cable because of the iPhone's abysmal battery life.

They should include one adapter for free or at a discount ($5-10 range) for loyal customers.

And BTW: an adapter for the old charger cable also doesn't require a chip or anything as it just has to pass through the USB signal. At least such a thing ($.20 to produce) should be included. Maybe Greenpeace should be informed. I mean, what a waste of perfectly fine material because everybody has to buy new cables...

The financials speak for themselves and they say you're full of it.

Why does every alleged scandal have to have "gate" attached on the end of its name? Watergate was the name of the office buildings for god's sake. What a bizarre language twist. :)

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I agree with those who think this is a little cheap of Apple. It's paradoxical that a company that can give fantastic customer service (from first hand experience) can also be rather cheeky with their pricing levels.

Oh and by the way, since this news came out, Safari seems snappier.

I'll wait till after my iPhone arrives before I complain to Apple. Don't want to get my pre-order canceled...

Financials? Where we're going we don't need financials. :D

:)

We certainly won't need past financial statements. Besides, Apple actually disappointed in Q3, so much for "financials".

Financial reports show what has been, they don't say anything about what could have been or what will be. Clearly, market share is an indicator for that as Apple would have made more money with higher market share, i.e. more items sold and more post-sale revenue/profit. iOS has lost relative market share to Android in every country worldwide. This is due to cheap Android phones for one part. But it is also due to iPhones being perceived as not cool for another. (from badass to boring, looking the same for years, hardware and software hardly evolving.) Additionally, Apple is constantly getting bad press for their closed system, for being cheap, ripping off their customers, and locking in users. A negative brand image WILL impact success and "financials" eventually.

Apple's new connector is already being used against them by Samsung to promote their own high-end phones. This just shows that these sort of things actually DO have an effect on market share and future sales. The least Apple could have done was to include adapters or make them easily (and affordably) available.

I called Apple yesterday to ask whether they knew for sure that the adapter would not be in the box with the phone. The Apple customer service rep I spoke with said that there's some confusion on their end about what exactly will be in the box. She said to wait till I get the package and then to call her if the adapter is not in the package and she would see about sending me one at no charge.

Totally agree - they have an unenviable task right now as a highly successful company. In one respect, you have the whole "don't screw with the winning formula" approach and in another respect they need to innovate and continue to push themselves to higher standards to avoid the rest of the market catching up and reducing their USP.

And that's all you have to say? You find this practice perfectly OK? You don't want to call Apple out on this? So if you say "why waste the resources to produce and package 50 million of them for free?", then how about Apple give those that want one for free? How about giving people an option to order one for free when they buy an iPhone 5. Your reasoning is flawed. Stop making excuses for this greedy company. Despicable.

All I hear from you is; " APPLE GIVE THIS FOR FREE, YOUR BAD FOR NAUGHT GIVING ME A FREE ADAPTOR! GRRR!! GIMME GIMME! FREE FREE! UR BAD APPLE, UR BAD mmMMmKay?!!!
"
Why should Apple supply it for free? Would you? I'll bet you wouldn't.

No, you're right. I would slap my loyal customers, who have bought docks, cables etc. over the past years for well over $100 (which cost me $5 to produce), in the face and sell adapters at some extra premium price. Umm... let's say something like $29/$39 a piece? And you know what? If you're an international customer I'm going to charge $10 extra, just because I can. And now shut up or I'll add another $10.

That confusion was corrected. It does do audio out, now says that in the description of both the adapters. My understanding is that it doesn't do the kind of video out people have in their cars.

ah...i missed that update. thanks! im still gonna pass on the iphone 5 though. not enough change frim my 4s, maybe next year.

I don't understand? why would you need an adapter if the phone comes with a lightning cable anyway?

I dont understand that even after advetising it with the iPhone that they wont atlest give it to people who oredered in that time frame. Better yet give it for FREE to all pre-ordering, or better yet include it for free with every new iPhone.
Or they could atleast reduce the price for people who pre-ordered.

Apple that is just plain greedy. You are 600 billion dollar company you can afford this good gesture.

Apple makes more money then Exxon which is a gas company, pretty amazing.

So Apple please include this.

They can look and see "Oh we fixed the description at 6:25Am (just an example), so therefore anyone who ordered from launch to 6:25 get it included".

Everyone who ordered before 6:25 AM? That would probably be in the hundred thousands. I doubt that many people actually read the print and thought they were getting an adapter.

You would be underestimating a lot then: I did, so did so many others.
