Now I gotta try this. I paid full price too since I wasn't eligible for upgrade. I wonder if it's just the 64GB since it's new...mines the 32 GB...Restoring right now and we'll see if it works.

Mine is a 16gb so I don't think storage size matters. Just laid the kids down for a nap, maybe I should restore again and get a screen shot.

----------

Did you have your AT&T sim in it when you did the restore?

Yup, the one that was shipped with my phone.

I had the AT&T sim in too... I wonder if these unlocked iPhones are also compatible to be activted with Verizon and Sprint...?

I wonder the same thing, but I am guessing they aren't. I say this because Sprint and Verizon normally lock the ESN of the phone into a database. If it isn't in the database, they can't activate it.

Didn't work. Mine gives me that welcome screen to setting up iPhone and all..I don't think its an iTunes error. Did you get a black phone?

so people who upgraded and didnt pay full price dont get this message?
I actually paid full price for my phone as well... I still don't get the message though. When exactly does the message show up? I restored as new, and then it just takes me to the screen where it allows me to set-up as a new phone or from a back-up.

I think it's because he paid full price. With the iPhone 4, if you bought it full price with AT&T, they had to come unlocked.

The message came up as soon as I went through registering the phone in iTunes. Blah I just restored this morning and don't really want to do it again lol.

BS. Unlocked iPhones are not available until November. I don't care if you paid full price or not, it's locked to your carrier. Until one of you stick in a Tmobile SIM card and get it working I don't believe this is anything but a bug in iTunes or a misreading on the part of us customers.

I paid full price for my iPhone 4 and it's sure as heck not unlocked.

lol completely understandable. I'll give it a try once again later.

You might have gotten lucky because both AT&T and Apple had some severe server overload yesterday? Great advantage either way though!

When you pay full price, do you still have to give them your AT&T phone number? I wonder if that makes a difference. Maybe giving your phone number causes them to ring it out and activate it differently.

I'm in line at the Apple Store now. I'm going to try to buy it without giving a phone number. I'll report back after I do a restore in iTunes. I also have plenty of MicroSIMs from different carriers to try that I've collected when traveling the world.

Screw it, I'm restoring again and ill post a screen shot....

I think it's better for u to go to T-Mobile and ask to borrow a card to test out if it's really unlocked or not cos it may have been a fluke that unlocked ur phone and if u restore it again, u may lose it.

I'm anxious to see how this plays out. I'm waiting to get my hands on an unlocked phone next month to use on T-Mobile. If I can do it now via ATT I'd be thrilled!

Man if you guys got unlocked phones because you paid full price I am not going to wait till November and just buy one now.

If you're going to pay full price why not just get a factory unlocked one from apple whenever you want?

Here is a picture... It says it is unlocked...

Happened Again

I restored the phone again. As soon as iTunes was finished restoring and the phone restarted this is what popped up. I also included the next screen.

Did the Apple Store ask you for your AT&T phone number when you purchased it at full price?

I bought it on the Apple website on the 7th and yes I have 2 lines one was eligible for an upgrade the other wasn't. I used it on the one that was not eligible so I had to pay full retail. I had to select data and text messaging I wanted so it appears you need to be an at&t customer to purchase an unlocked one for right now until November.

That was my same situation.

Maybe that's the key. If you buy from the Apple Online Store, you end up with an unlocked one even though they're not officially available yet. If you pay full price at the retail store, it's probably still going to be locked.

I decided not to risk it and try it at the retail store. The line was moving pretty slowly, and I didn't feel like waiting just to be disappointed.
