It's been stated customers in good standing with AT&T can request to be unlocked for travel reasons.

Where has this ever been stated? ATT has refused this for me and everyone I have ever read about on EVERY occasion I have ever read about.

I bought two extra iPhones at the Apple store on Friday. I specified device only and paid full retail. I didn't specify or give them a carrier or phone number though. My receipt says they are AT&T iPhones. Do you think these are unlocked? I don't want to break the seal but I'll go buy more if they are unlocked.

I would but I want to keep these phones sealed in the box like they are. I have both a white and black. If they are unlocked I will go buy more tomorrow, if not I don't want to break the seal and then be out an iPhone.

i want to know if some one brought their iphone from at&t store not apple store ,for full price and got an unlocked iphone?

I'm keeping up with this thread for definite answers so I could maybe buy one at AT&T without a contract and use it for T-Mobile. ^^

I bought a full priced 32GB 4S from an AT&T store and it's locked. I think because the rep pulled up my AT&T account and activated on that line even though I didn't extend my contract and paid full retail price. At this point I have a few days to return it. I'll pick up one from the Apple Store once there's a confirmed way to get factory unlocked ones from there.

I think at this point it's fair to assume that if you don't give them your phone number at the store (which means you have to pay full price), the phone will be unlocked when you connect to iTunes.

This sorta makes sense coz it's the same price anyway, a lot of us paying full price will return within 30 days to get the official unlocked version if the phone came locked. So this saves everyone the troubles and money from us returning, and Apple refurbishing the returned units to sell at a discount later.

I posted this yesterday:

And I tested this all day today to see if it was true:

And the model number is the same one that's sold by AT&T.

Even my receipt says:

My model number for a wht 64gb is MD272LL but I think mines is lock to ATT because I didnt get that msg.
Hope the dev team can come up with a unlock for me, which is slim, since they havent fully unlock the 4 as yet.

I have a question then

I'm currently eligible for an upgrade.

If I go to BestBuy and get my buddy to just hand me the iPhone 4S without even opening it, and then later at home sync it with iTunes, will I get that message since it wasn't even activated at the store?

How did you guys buy the phones from the Apple Store anyway?

Did you just come in and ask them for an "off contract" phone or how?

I'm going to go try this tomorrow.

Edit: I don't have a contract with AT&T. Just on holiday here in the States. I preordered mine from Canada but it'll be great if I can get one sooner.

I posted the two iPhones I bought on Friday off-contract on the local classifieds. Got a call a few minutes later. A friend and I went to meet the person, we broke the seal plugged in the iPhones and the unlocked came up. He guy bought, I made several hundred dollars on the deal and the guy will buy more if I get more. Going to the Apple store tomorrow to get as many iPhones as I can, I hope the general public doesn't find out about this.

How are you making money on an unlocked phone o_O, they cost the same as the off contract phones anyway. I don't get it.

99% of population still thinks that unlocked iPhones won't go on sell until November. Obviously I didn't tell him how I did it.

Just got back form the Apple store 5th ave NYC.
I bought an off contract white 32GB 4S with AT&T based on this thread's, and guess what, it's UNLOCKED!
I also tried restore just to see what happened, the pics say it all.

He'll find out eventually seeing searching "unlocked iPhone 4S" in Google brings up a couple articles in the first entry stating it can be now be bought unlocked.

You'll just look like a asshat next time you try to sell more devices to this guy.

Long time reader of MacRumors but I guess I never registered a forum account...

Anyways, is it plausible that Apple mightrevoke/ban these unlocked phones from the IMEI list? Certainly possible, but would they?

And it seems odd to me that for over 24 hours, from when 4S phones were available Friday morning, that no one else discovered this until Saturday? Or people just aren't observant? Or all restoring from old phone backups? So odd...

I wish I lived closer to NY, I'd go buy a phone right now... Thanks for the insight you guys. I was fairly ticked off when I tried to pre-order an unlocked phone at 3AM last week and couldn't.

Hmm, I'm terribly confused by all of this. Two questions:

1. If you get the Congrats message in iTunes, is your device unlocked forever? The explanation seems to be that activation through iTunes will send info to Apple, who will then lock your phone, meaning your iPhone was unlocked momentarily until you activated it with ATT or whoever.

2. What happens if you buy a subsidized phone and renewed your contract but you "forgot your SIM card at home"? Will they still fiddle with and lock your phone or will they give you a brand new box and tell you to activate it at home once you put the SIM card in?

btw, the secret is out: http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/15/apple...contract-free-iphone-4s-in-the-united-states/

when you buy the full price iphone, do you need to have an active at&t line?
or could I just walk into a apple store and buy a full price phone?

I'm traveling in the US at the moment and since I'm not a us citizen I don't have a SSN, and can't open a contract with any carrier.
Would I be able to purchase?
