ok here is my problem i was visiting the states a few weeks ago and a buddy of mine helped me buy a verizon 32gb iphone 4S on ebay model number MD279LL running OS 5 with firmware 1.0.11 from my understanding at first i thought the phone was already unlocked since it was advertised as unlocked but it turns out that it isn't even so i thought i could unlock it and use it back in china... now i am back in shanghai and when i insert my sim card it says "phone has not been activated" and other such error codes when i plug into itunes or when i insert a prepaid sim card i buy here in china... the phone doesn't work... is there any way that i can unlock or jailbreak my phone for it to work? i've never had a service with verizon before and i have no plans to return to the states anytime soon

should have gotten the sprint version since they are gsm unlocked! Anyways, I would recommend you to get a friend that has verizon to call them up for the unlock.

so if i have a friend in the states that uses verizon all he/she has to do is call verizon and ask for an iphone unlock code that i can punch into my phone like a cheat code in a video game and my iphone will become unlocked? or do i have to send my phone to a friend and go through a lot of hassle?

----------

the problem is that my iphone 4S is a verizon iphone 4S but it was never activated? or it was cancelled shortly after and the guy sold it to me through ebay? doesn't the phone have to be currently active on the verizon network for me to be able to unlock it?

Yeah i think the phone needs to be active with a Verizon line for them to be able to unlock it, otherwise, again you may be out of luck. I doubt your friend can call Verizon and have them unlock it unless he had bought it and was tied to a line....

I think so. The best option may be to see if the seller would accept a return. Barring that, perhaps put it back on sale on a forum to see if someone is willing to do a phone swap once the unlocked version goes on sale in the US later this month.

Tell her to call Verizon and ask for an iPhone unlock code ( I don't know if Verizon is offering the feature for the iPhone yet but they said they will within 60 days). She gives Verizon your imei number and Verizon submits the requests to apple. Within a week or so apple unlocks the phone from their side and there u have it.

That's not quite how it works. Verizon performs the unlock, not Apple. Verizon's unlock is not the same as an Apple unlock; you will not get the iTunes confirmation with a Verizon unlock, since the iPhone will still have an MNC/MCC restriction for U.S. GSM network SIMs.

Once you request the unlock from Verizon and they perform their thing on their end, it is immediate.

verizon will not give you an unlock code, but they will send your imei thru apple data center to the white list!

how you know that?
I have a Verizon iPhone 4S and have gotten my phone unlocked from Verizon Global Support. The phone will work with any foreign SIM (and roam on US GSM networks with a foreign SIM) but will not work with US network SIM cards. The iTunes unlock confirmation screen does not appear.

Factory unlocked iPhones, however, do provide the iTunes unlock confirmation screen, and do not have any US GSM network restrictions.

Are you telling me they will give you an unlock code for an iphone 4s?
There is no "unlock code" for the iPhone 4S. The unlock is performed on the server side, not from the phone itself.

so yea I was half correct then with the server side! So I guess cdma iphone 4s list are on verizon/sprint server instead of apple if I didn't miss anything rite?

Exactly, although I'm not sure about Sprint's situation but I'd assume it is the same. I do know that currently the Sprint iPhone 4S comes with a SIM unlock right out of the box (with the same US GSM restriction as the Verizon iPhone 4S.)

I see! Learn something new today. Thanx buddy lol.

If you try restoring your iPhone through iTunes you'll get the unlock confirmation message.

AT&T Terms?

I had to accept the Apple terms and also AT&T terms. Though no account information was given. I've yet to activate my iPhone. Last time I bought two I do not remember accepting AT&T terms. Did you guys accept AT&T terms? It was not a contract but some terms & conditions.

does anybody have any experience making a reservation for the iphone and then being able to buy it for full price as 'Device Only' ? I cant find a single store around which has the phone in stock and my only option is to now make a reservation or wait until the unlocked version is released..

Yes, that's no problem. Just reserve an "AT&T phone" tonight at 9:00, and then when you buy it tomorrow, tell them you want to buy it "device only." Most stores will do that for you. That's how I got mine.

I need some advice for the experts on this unlock deal. I purchase a white At&T iphone through Apple.com. I decided I don't want it anymore and plan to get a black Iphone instead. I went to the Apple store to hopefully exchange it but was denied because it was bought on Apple.com. So I went ahead a bought a full priced 64gb Iphone even though I have one already active on my account. I'm not sure if the clerk rang it up as a "device only" purchase but the on the receipt it mentions: "No wireless activation during Iphone sale".

Now the plan is to start the return process on the white Iphone that I still currently have from Apple.com. In the mean time I bought the Black Iphone as a temporary so there was no downtime without an Iphone. So what options do I have to get this thing unlocked? I'm thinking of actually doing a real return (not exchange) on the white Iphone through Apple.com. Open the new full priced 64gb Black Iphone and hope to get it unlocked. The problem is, when the first white iphone completes its return process. I'm supposed to go back to the store to get a price adjustment on the black (2nd) Iphone to get the $399 price point. Whether that includes going through the whole Itunes process, I'm not sure on that? Anybody know? Hopefully it's just paperwork instead of the whole activation process. The Apple clerk said they would do a price adjustment. Will that ruin this whole unlock thing? Any workarounds?
