Yes, that's no problem. Just reserve an "AT&T phone" tonight at 9:00, and then when you buy it tomorrow, tell them you want to buy it "device only." Most stores will do that for you. That's how I got mine.

Same thing here. I reserved, went in, paid full price as device only... plug into iTunes, UNLOCKED right away! :)

Anyway to verify on the receipt if it was purchase as a device only purchase?

the price you paid? $649, $749, $849. (and not the $199. $299. $399).

I trust apple is good at all these things, should NOT be a problem, anyway i am waiting for the official unlocked iPhone though!

Nope, the only thing that differentiates is the high price, I guess. And under AT&T Account Information it says "No Wireless Service Activation during iPhone Sale" if that means anything. But it looks like all the full price phones are automatically unlocked.

The sales specialist told me it wouldn't work for me, but I knew better, and it does work :)

I mentioned this before in this thread, but my receipt did NOT say "Device Only"; however, it did say "No wireless activation during sale". Upon connecting to iTunes, I did get the unlocked message, twice. (I did a restore after the first time, as a test.) I swapped out my AT&T SIM with a T-Mobile SIM, and it worked.

Since then I've swapped back to my AT&T SIM, but just yesterday, I put in the T-Mobile SIM again, and it still worked. The test will come when I go to Korea and get a prepaid SIM there, but I won't be able to do that until next June.

Well I just got a replacement from the Apple store and I no longer get the "Congratulations your iPhone is unlocked" screen in iTunes when I restore. Is there any way to find out if my new device is unlocked or not without having to get another carrier's SIM?

sounds like your factory unlocked imei from the previous iphone 4s did not carry over! I would suggest you to return the iphone and buy a new device only.

I was worried about this scenario, so didnt get it till now. Will wait for true unlocked phone to be released.

Im not 100% sure but dont you only see that screen/window once?
The first time its restored or upgraded after the unlock and since that it never comes up again I heard.
To be sure stick in a Tmobile sim and see what happens.

With my original one that was purchased "device only" that screen would come up every time I restored. I wish I knew someone with a t-mobile microsim so I could test it.

folks - hopefully i am not deviating off-topic from this thread - but for people who followed the reservation system - i live in CT and i missed the 9:00 pm deadline - and by the time it was 9:30, all i saw was none available - how long before they sell out, I know i am gonna set tripple alarms today, but is there any hope?

Also, do I use the online registration form or the app from the app store. The app store app was asking me if this was a new line or upgrade to an existing line and all that kind of questions.

does anybody have any experience making a reservation for the iphone and then being able to buy it for full price as 'Device Only' ? I cant find a single store around which has the phone in stock and my only option is to now make a reservation or wait until the unlocked version is released..

if anyone has any experience, pls help. sold my iphone 4 today and going through iphone withdrawls already. :( :(

I made reservation and went and picked up from Apple store at full retail. No problem at all, Apple store employee just kept reminding me that phone is still locked to ATT. Which was untrue.

Someone on page 20 reported back that he/she was able to get the replacement iphone and it was unlocked. Did you try to restore your phone ? Now I'm thinking of return mine and purchase the official unlocked version.

Yea I did the restore but didn't get the message. There's no way for me to find out bc I don't have an active SIM from another carrier.

There is zero need to do this. Please another SIM in and check to see if it is unlocked. I no longer get the message and it remained unlocked. Before you do that ask the Genius to check the lock status and they can look it up and show you.

Actually the sim doesn't need to be active, you can pop in any sim that is not at&t. If it unlocked, it probably display no network. However, if isn't then it will bring up the activation screen (but once you reinsert your sim, it will go back to normal )

Does t-mobile make micro sims? If so, maybe I'll head down to the store and see if I could put one in to test it.

Yes I bought $30 pre-pay SIM from T-Mo and tested mine. They've cutter which they use to cut the regular SIM in to a micro SIM.

Does anyone know if this still works with the new EasyPay system that Apple is using? I was at the store today, and they wanted me to fill in all my information before getting to the step where you choose no-commitment or 2-year pricing. I assumed that would sign me up for AT&T service, so I left without buying it.

If your phone shows the message of congratulations..... It's unlocked and you do replacement under warranty, the new phone is default factory unlocked and such factory unlocked phones don't show any message when restored as they were not locked to begin with. My iPhone 4S purchased unlocked from London Apple store also does not display any congratulations message when restored and accepts sims from any carrier.

Mentioning to genius that your phone was unlocked at the time of replacement also helps.

Hope this is the info you all been looking for!

That makes sense.
Good luck El3ctronics.
