If you only use a Smart Cover, does the back get scratched up under regular use? I don't want to ruin the lightness of the iPad Air 2 with a case but also worried the back might get scratched up.

I was going to get an iPad Smart Cover, the guy who was buying it said to me that he had had people coming in who have smashed/dented and scratched the back, and told me to buy the case. After telling him I didn't have the money, he knocked £10 of the price!

I used a gelaskins skin (sticker) on the back of my ipad 4. The skin got quite scuffed over the last two years, but when I peeled it off last week, the ipad was perfect underneath. I'm getting a new one for the back of my Air 2 - Nuvango (the gelaskins maker) says they'll have them for sale by the end of the week.

How did the corners fit?

Edit: and how thick are they? Thicker than Zagg or Ghost Armor. I ask because I usually use Ghost Armor. It allows a case to fit. But I'm thinking of just a sticker and sleeve now.

Considering Smart Cover but scared for the back of the iPad.

Let us know what you think and whether the Smart Cover fits flush. Thanks!

The Smart Cover fits fine. Actually there's a gap where the Smart Cover hinge doesn't cover the whole edge, so about 1/8 or 1/6" gap in the back. No big deal.

For the price this cover is excellent. Won't protect from a drop much, but it covers the whole back and all the edges (except the edge where the Snart Cover goes) with a soft rubbery like thin skin. It's a shame it's not clear or a solid color. It's frost, which I'm not crazy about. But the price is right.

After four different cover/case combos.....

Howdy Folks,

I went through a trial and error period with my iPads for the "perfect" protection and case. I started with an iPad 2, and tried a full blown folio case which acted as a swivel stand and case for the iPad. It however weighed as much as the iPad 2 itself, so effectively doubled the weight and made it much thicker to carry. So, I switched from that two an Apple Smart cover and a plastic back (learned about the necessity for a smart cover compatible one the hard way). That worked perfectly, or so I thought.... The case and cover added very little weight or thickness to my iPad 2, and I initially thought it was an awesome combination. Over a period of a few months, the backing begin to split and crack at the corners, and I ended up replacing it with another brand. It was also about this time that I noticed what looked like rub or wear marks on the aluminum casing where the smart cover attached to iPad (via magnets). That was the proverbial last straw, and that was when I purchased an Apple Smart Case, and switched to that. Granted it was thicker than the previous combo, but the added weight was negligible, and best of all the only parts that touched the actual surface of the iPad was covered in microfiber. I ended up using this case, and it even carried over to my iPad 4. So, when it came time to get a case for my new iPad Air 2, it was a no brainer, and I purchased the Apple Smart Case immediately. I am a little disappointed that they no longer offer a polycarbonate smart case, and only the leather one, but it is worth it to me for the protection. The aluminum case will only scratch if something hard than it touches it, and I would expect that the shiny Apple Logo would be susceptible to scratches as well. I wouldn't leave the back naked. It is not like if you scratch it, that you can erase it, it is scratched forever. In my mind the cost is well worth it, think of it kind of like "scratch" insurance :) Conversely, I never use screen protectors (other than the cover of the smart cover) on my iPads (or iPhones for that matter) as I don't put them into situations where anything other than my fingers or micro fiber touches them.

Thanks for the photo. I appreciate it!

I Should add that after using it for a couple of hours, I'm not so sure.

First, it's soft. When you grab it by the bottom, the part that grabs the bottom is very thin because of the speaker cutouts, and it jiggles a bit. Also, I see the issue with the cover now. This skin comes up a bit to protect the iPad if you were to lay it screen down on a surface. It's a small lip. The cover still closes, it's a very small lip. But I see where the Smart Cover doesn't sit flush. If it sat flush, they'd be no protection.

I'm waiting on a clear case from Kaycases (also Amazon) to see if a more rigid case is more to my liking. I'm not liking that grabbing the iPad by the bottom seems to juggle the thin piece of case protecting the bottom.

I've used the Incipio Smart Feather covers for my last 2 iPad Mini's (i.e. original and Retina) and my wife's last two full size iPad's (Air and iPad 2). I thought they worked great. They don't add much bulk (very minimal), were very grippy and keep the smart cover locked in place...it won't come off (i.e. some don't like this feature....but I did).

Now, my wife just upgraded to the Air 2 and I to the Original Air. We've both opted to use just the Smart cover this go-around. Personally, I much prefer using the iPad without a back cover (i.e. can really enjoy the thinness of the device). Plus, we're both very careful with them...so not too worried about back scratches or drop's/cracks!

i've had my ipad air for a year now and have been using the same blue smart cover the whole time sometimes bare even and I have no scratches or scuffs whatsover its still pristine even the chamfered edges *knock on wood lol*.

I travel with it a lot and it gets heavy use at home mostly by the kids but I find its a lot harder to drop that big device as opposed to say an iphone so that probably helps and the fact that when using it you will most likely be stationary as opposed to walking or driving also helps so you should be fine with just the smart cover.

The iPad aluminum is very resilient. The only scratches or dents my iPad ever accrued was from banging it into something, or dropping something on it.

Sliding the back of an iPad across a dirty table strangely will not affect it at all. I was surprised how well it resists scratches. I could set it down on nearly anything, even in my toolbox, and nothing would happen.

People always want to run around naked until they get their ... Valuables damaged from lack of protection. Drop your iPad once on anything but carpet and you won't love those stickers nearly as much. New iPad air 2 screen is likely expensive.

I ended up exchanging my Smart Cover for the midnight blue smart case. I want to protect that chamfered edge!

I went for midnight blue smart case on a white and silver iPad. I usually go for space grey and black case but fancied a change. And I think it looks awesome.

The back is fairly scratch resistant, but as now I'm about to trade in my Air, the back has incurred a few light scratches, and one very deep one.

If you don't protect the back, and frequently place it down on a myriad of surfaces on its back, yes it will scratch.

I had the smart case on the Air and it worked well. My new one is gold and there's no way I want to cover the back so I did the black Smart Cover with kayscase. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OC5OTWE/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item

Can't do clear plastic. Looks cheap day 1, looks horrendous after a few months of wear.

anybody get the white cover...or is that going to be a regrettable decision? The case takes away all the advantages of being thinner for the 2.

The corners are cut out, so they're easy to smooth down. When I first put the gelaskin on my ipad 4, one of the corners had a really tiny fold in it that I just couldn't seem to smooth out, but somehow that magically disappeared (I think maybe it had something to do with the material being stretchy and flexible). I got a couple of tiny air bubbles that showed up days after I put the skin on, but then those disappeared too.

It's pretty thin - other than a texture change, I can't really tell that it's there. I've never used Zagg or Ghost Armor so I can't compare.

I'm using my Smart Cover from the Air on my Air 2. I just stuck four of those sticky rubber nubs on each corner of the back, just to make sure it doesn't slide around and cause scratches when I set it down. I'm careful with my stuff and no one shares MY iPad so I should be good with this approach.

I tried couple of those back covers on the Air to go with the Smart Cover. They both have a lip causing the cover not to close flush, and one of them had sharp edges around the cutouts which is not pleasant to the touch. I'll just go naked this time.

I still have the smart case for the Air. Too bad it doesn't fit the 2 and I'm not gonna pay $$$ for another.

So they don't leave the corners open? I've used iCarbon and Ghost Armor. Ghost Armor have these cutouts that leave some of the corners unprotected. ICarbon kind of had a slit that you fit together to cover the entire corner. Sounds like these are more like iCarbon.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going with a sticker and sleeve this time so I want something a bit more interesting than the clear ghost armor I have been using.

Thx again

I just got my Dolce, and my new Air 2, today. I agree with ZBoater about the thin pieces above the speakers. They are floppy. I'm also not used to the edges curling up and over. My old iPad had a case where the edges of the case just cane to the edge of the screen. That part isn't bad, just something I have to get used to. This will do nicely while I decide if or what case I want.

My Smart Cover also arrived. I never had one before. It's okay, because I only paid $14 for it (eBay.) No way would I pay $39 for one. I really don't mind spending for quality, but this isn't it.
