I am very much looking forward it being at this year's CES! If there are any other MacRumors members who will be in attendance, let me know so maybe we can meet up!

There's far too much to see, even in 4 days, so I'll have to pick and choose, but the whole HD DVD and Blu Ray displays will definitely be interesting to see. I'll see what else I can find with respect to Apple, Intel, VIIV, etc. and will take pictures where ever possible.

What Apple should be doing is putting it's butt in the Satellite Radio market with the ipod. Great things are about to happen with this and Apple should be apart of it. Setting up a link to itunes would even be a start. Not that Napster is doing great but hooking up with XM was a very smart deal. Apple should be with XM instead (or Sirius).

Not too mention partying with your favorite porn "actresses" just down the street!:D

An article on tomshardware suggested that the BD-drive with burning capabilities will be available for $500. Pioneer believes that enthusiats and digital media people will be the first adopters.:)

To me this suggests an quick availablility for the pro mac lines.
:D

I would love for apple to be the first comp company to offer the next gen standard.

I would pay! (if i had any money that is)
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple was the first to adopt Blu Ray as a standard feature. In the past, Apple was the first to adopt the 3.5" Floppy as standard, (also the first to get rid of it), and the first to offer CD-ROM as a standard feature. I also believe they were the first to offer affordable DVD burners (superdrives).

You mean the eternally beta Vista and the overhyped flop called 360? Oh, ok...

Great assessment - Longhorn/Vista has been delayed multiple times, and I have no idea when it will actually be released - definitely not on their scheduled release date, that's for sure! :p ;)

As for the 360, yeah, I've heard there have been troubles and lukewarm reviews of the system so far - I have no desire to own one. You think MS would have learned form Sega's hard lessons regarding the whole "first next gen console to market" experience (anyone remember the Dreamcast?) but evidently not.

Hopefully Never.
but really, maybe we'll get lucky and it will be after Leopard.

I seriously doubt Apple will have Blue-Ray in the first Intel Mac.Mainly due to compatibility issues with older standard CD's..The Pioneer BD doesnt play them.

Doubtful for BluRay in Mac before WWDC-timeframe

Here's an article from x-bit labs that pretty much sums up the rollout of BluRay in the next 6-9 months. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage/display/20051227220441.html

But this first drive, the Pioneer BDR-101A http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage/display/20050830204649.html seems geared towards the pro market. Most likely the first Mac to see the drive will be the Intel PowerMacs with Conroe, sometime after September, but I doubt it would be a Parallel ATA version Apple would use.

A slight delay makes sense - is their even support in MacOS X yet for either BD (or HD-DVD)? MacOS X v10.4.4 will be released around MWSF, and "digging in the basement" will reveal any hints of hi-def support files.

Also, the lack of CD support would likely "nix" it anyways from an iMac or mini - though they may see the Sony drive (if its S-ATA), but not the BenQ, which is only a BD-ROM. And at $500 it's too pricey for putting in a mini - especially if you want to add a dual-core Yonah (msrp = $1,250?)...

The slim laptop version will appear sometime in late spring or summer, which means it would be in the Merom PowerBooks around September. The iBook may not see it until early 2007

More info on BluRay

I've been hunting for info on when BluRay will appear, and I just came across this news item from The Register: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/11/18/panasonic_bluray_chip/ I think it would be best if Apple waits for the "v2.0", which would have this enhanced chipset. Panasonic lists BD-ROM, BD-R/RE, DVD±R/RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW and CD-ROM as supported formats.

Also, I found info on Toshiba's slimline HD-DVD drive for laptops: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/10/03/toshiba_notebook_hd-dvd-drive/ It was amongst the MS/Intel claim that BluRay could not work in notebooks.

As well as the rebuttal from the BluRay camp: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/09/30/dell_hp_vs_ms_intel/ However, I could not find info on any BluRay notebook drive efforts.

I can't wait to see the new Dell 30".

I knew nothing about this. Guess I'll have to take a peak myself in person if they'll be showing it off...

A 30" Dell - just in time for Apple to release its 36" LCD in the near future... ;)

The logical step up from 30 inches would be 42 inches. I should know.

Here's to the Crazy Ones

do you mean on X86 natively, or on regular non apple PCs natively ?

I meant non-Apple PCs. ;) Wouldn't that be sweet though? Instead of PC users having to hack OS X onto their boxes as they currently do, Apple makes the OS run natively on PCs, and they release it before Vista can come out. Talk about taking the wind of of Microsoft's sales (pun intended) if this actually would be the case!

I'm only being half-serious of course, but didn't you find it odd that at WWDC, for the entire keynote, essentially all Jobs talked about was the Intel transition except for that one little seemingly useless blurb about Leopard? Why even say anything at all about it? Well, perhaps it's because it's part of the overall master plan... ;)

I think he meant Non-Apple PC's. If Apple released Leopard before Vista came out, and made it available to Windows users for PC's - goodbye Microsoft.

But this would never happen. ...I don't think.

EDIT: ~Shard~, you beat me. But then I was answering a question that was addressed to you anyways.

TiVo will also have a booth at CES. Perhaps we'll see that cable-ready dual-tuner HDTV unit with full OS X compatibility. ::ducking:: :D

Oh sure. Just like Tivo Desktop for 10.4 and Tivo-2-Go for Mac OS X are coming also.

Heh heh - no worries, I appreciate the assistance! Plus, they say that great minds think alike... ;)

Not-So-Great minds also think alike; Windows users proved that. I don't think that applies to us however. :D

Windows users, yeah, that's the "fools seldom differ" part of the saying - as you say, not applicable to us.

guys, that would be TOTALLY sweet, and maybe not as remote a possibility as it might appear...

...considering in a couple of weeks we'll have hundreds of coders at work to run native windows apps under tiger through emulation, dual booting or else...

i mean 2006/2007 = you run XP under OSX, and Apple hardware sales grow exponentially; 2007/2008 = you run OSX on every PC and software sales grow exponentially :)

i'm just wondering if Steve realizes the HUGE market share possibilities behind such a move
