Why do the people with this issue have so much trouble believing it's not universal? Some people really don't have it, regardless of signal strength.

I have friend who claimed the same thing - that it wasn't a universal problem and that his phone was perfect. Then he came over to my house and within 5 seconds I could reproduce the issue on his iPhone 4.

So I'll believe it isn't a hardware/universal issue it when someone comes over with their iPhone 4 and I can't reproduce the issue in my own house, but can on my iPhone in the same timeframe.

Is it really that hard to rotate the phone in your fingers by 2mm or so to prevent the corner from being covered by your fleshy palm? Really?
Do they really have to write on the lid of a coffee mug that the coffee is hot?

Look. We are all tech geeks here. We represent 5% of the population. The vast majority can't be arsed to understand technical nonsense like the location of the antenna on a cellphone. They just pick up the phone and expect it to work regardless of how they hold it, as long as they don't put it in their mouths or try to use it under water. When people have issues with phone signal it would never occur to them to hold the phone differently, instead they would pace around the house looking for the spot with the best signal. Why? Because this peculiar design choice has no precedent, so the thought would never occur to them. Because the worst you could accomplish with holding other phones a certain way was to lose a bar or two, not have your call dropped.

I'm also waiting for a golf club that will give me a good swing no matter how I hold it. Because I deserve it.

There is nothing unreasonable with expecting to be able to hold a phone any damn way you please. Stop trying to make it into an "age of entitlement" issue. Then again, as Kernkraft pointed out, you're one of those people who would side with Apple at any cost. If Apple made a poisonous soft drink you'd go "ooooh, so now you want soft drinks that don't kill you. Boo hoo. Kids today are so spoiled they won't adapt to anything, it's all feed me feed me feed me..."

Disingenuous

Clearly Consumer Reports is being disingenuous by putting on an ugly piece of tape. I use a very nice slim case - looks great and I have NO signal problems. :D

Besides, who... would buy a glass phone... without protecting it? Most people use a case. And yes, there are very nice slim cases available that do not take away from the iPhone's elegance. Everyone likes the iPhone 4 anyway. Nuff said.

How any fanboy can continue to deny any of the antenna accusations are beyond me

There are two types of people, people that love apple and people that hate it and people that criticize it, but love it all the same... no, Three types of people, people that love apple, people that hate it, people that criticize it, but love it all the same, and people that don't really care... Four types of people, people that... I'll come in again...

I have had four iPhone's so far but until Apple fixes the problem or releases rev.b / iPhone 5 or what ever I'm not buying a new iPhone.

He'll with apple fanboys who make $6 an hour at wendys.

If you're going to sell consumer devices, poor communication to your consumers is not a good way to go, especially if you have such visibility.

It's not about slim cases. If Apple is going to make a design statement about how clever the antenna design is, I'd like for them to complete that statement given the data we have about how badly engineered this antenna design is. Look, your body can act as a conductor. You have two externally exposed antennas, exposed to your body that is a conductor. Apple (Jobs) clearly stated that this was part of some brilliant design. It's not the world's thinnest smartphone with a brilliant antenna design if you are REQUIRED to add bulk to it, and cover up (ie: physically modify) this brilliant antenna design.

It's not about the slim cases. Apple's backed itself into this corner. We didn't create this thinness or design expectation, Jobs' keynote did. Making calls is the killer app (2007 iPhone Keynote). If indeed that's true, then how does Apple expect us to associate quality with Apple design? The number one qualifier of phone quality is the quality of its calls, its signal. I'm gonna leave the durability discussion out of it, because it's another problem entirely.

It never ceases to amaze me that an individual without the finger of death problem thinks that really there is no problem.

There's no problem for you. Congrats.

Now back to our story: there's a problem. :p

There is no problem for him, honest people talks about what they know.
Congrats indeed, for telling the truth, in case it's true.
:)

I decided this weekend to go and check out an iphone4 because I really want one. It's amazing and has really solid feeling to it. I couldn't get the reception issues in the store and I live and work in really good coverage. But to be fair I went to Bestbuy to check out the competition. All the top competitors (Evo,Incredible ect..) just looked and felt cheap in comparison Imho. And what is with Bestbuy not turning the units on so you can see what you get like Apple does.BtW the salesman was an Android fan boy big time, he repeated the same crap all the trolls on this forum do. I'll go with the Iphone4 any day of the week over an Android. If I have to hold it different when I'm in bad coverage no big deal.

But you shouldn't have to. You may not like the "feel" of the Android phones...but at least you can hold them anyway you want.

I will agree that the iPhone4 form factor is the best on the market...but at what cost? Apple screwed this up. They simply released a phone with a major design flaw. Apple and its die hard fans should acknowledge that.

What they need to do is announce that a hardware fix is in the works, and that for those that are not satisfied with the pending software fix - a full refund will be offered, or a credit towards the updated hardware due this fall.

Some people are just so hung up on this "but you shouldn't have to" point. Look, this isn't a matter of principle, it's a matter of consumer discretion. If the iPhone 4 is the best phone on the market all things considered, including that you might have to adjust your grip, then buy it. If adjusting your grip is unacceptable, then find another phone that better suits your needs. Stop trying to tell people who aren't bothered by this (because they have a case, don't mind adjusting their grip, or don't have the problem to begin with) to be outraged by something they don't care about. If you care about it, you be outraged - but don't insist that eveyone else is too.

I don't think I can be bought for the price of a Bumper. I love the phone, but I warn anyone who asks about the problem.

I never saw any dropping bars yet. I live in germany and it´s like abolutely no issue to me.
I am sorry for anyone having problems with this.

What the heII are you doing on this forum dude? Why don't you join the other geeks at some fandroid forum... Here you may learn how to install Linux, and download warez on your newborn EVOs (ohh Sorry... I forgot... No battery)
It's not that b&w dumbass! You can like some of apple's product and dislike others. You don't have to love or hate each product a company make.

Don't forget, apple's crap does not smell any better than the 1000 other corporations'.

my droid-loving friends are having the time of their lives bashing on me and my iphone 4 antenna.

The problem is, i can't argue with them, it really does suck.

What is worse is that Apple treats us like the fool.

Yup. Those are the two things I hate most about this mess: Droid lovers are having a great time making fun of me, and Apple is lying to me.

My decision to wait to upgrade to the next hardware revision that will inevitably come out next June is looking better by the day.

Actually I believe something along those lines is what will happen. Think, you need to make 1M+ of something in a short amount of time. You were supposed to dip this part in a coating for 10 seconds, but if you cut that to 5 seconds you can get closer to your production goals. In the short amount of time to manufacture something, seconds can add up quickly in the aggregate.

good point! seems plausible that perhaps they took the lower end of the time range estimated to give a sufficient thickness to the coating to insulate and for whatever reasons, perhaps slight variations in temperature or other environmental conditions that produced many defective phones. I wonder if that led to inconsistencies even within the same lots of phones. Now that would be a nightmare recall. I bet the midnight oil is burning at Apple trying to figure a way out of having a general recall.

Why do the people with this issue have so much trouble believing it's not universal? Some people really don't have it, regardless of signal strength.

If actual download / upload speed drop a little because my hand is over that section, thats some what acceptable. If it drop until my speedtest is below 10kbs and Apple is telling me that I'm holding it wrong, that is a freaking joke.

Signal strength really depends on your location, geographically and how close you are to a cell tower. I can test it out in two different location while one would only slowly drop a bar, another location can drop until an iPhone becomes an iTouch

It´s a shame you´re bringing Gandhi in context with your hateful attitude.
Anyway, what do u mean by "Let´s bring down Steve.."?
Calm down. I still believe for most buyers this issue will never be an issue.
Just hype.

I sure hope it's sooner than that. I purchased a bumper on launch day, so a refund would be all I need.

I could see Steve giving all buyers a $100 apple gift card or something to buy a case and something else for all our trouble.

yeah, they can afford the $170 million in gift cards (1.7 million iphone4 sold the first three days)

I wonder how long Apple new about this BEFORE they released the phone. You can't miss something this bad. No freaking way.
