I just wish Steve Jobs wouldn't say idiotic things like "the desktop is dead" now that the iPad came out. I'm sure millions of iMac, mac Mini and Mac Pros owners don't appreciate that. Can't Apple kick ass in desktops AND the iDevices?

Its just such a stupid thing to say, desktops wont be dead untill we have laptops which equal them in power at something like a reasonable price.

I'm one of those people who actually returned their iPhone 4 for a refund.
Simply because it doesn't work as advertised for me.

I understand a simple plastic or silicone case solves the issue.
Yet if I'd wanted a plastic phone I'd have bought a Nexus One.

So you returned your iPhone 4 and got a...plastic phone instead?

What killed the iPhone for me was that I never felt comfortable holding a phone made of mostly glass with just two fingers or balancing it on my palm - which I had to do in areas of weak signal.
If on the street someone would bump into me, I'd easily drop it if I don't firmly grasp it.

I'm extremely paranoid about dropping my iPhone. It's very slippery in my hand (dry skin I guess). I'm on the hunt for a bumper case (though I'd rather use the phone naked) simply to give me a better grip. Not to mention the phone tends to slide off angled things you set it on like a wet bar of soap.

And we have seen the YouTube videos of people cracking iPhone 4s easily by dropping them from a standing height...

Psst...here's a little secret: other smartphones with glass screens also crack when you drop them from a standing height. It's true! You wouldn't know it (unless it's happened to you) because other brand phones with cracked screens don't make the evening news.

You think that you can... smell me... through your computer?

Whoa. How many layers of crazy have you got over there?

I was right, wasn't I?

Remember; anything Steve can do, I can do better. :p

Some people have "magical" abilities. When there's all that magic floating around :apple: it's easy to think different! :D

Inhale for yourself; I don't (and never have) smoked anything. (Probably why I can smell so well.)

2/3 of it consists of juvenile rants and personal attacks. Suggesting that a [long winded] thread on a subject gives it any more merit is faulty logic. A good portion of this thread can be attributed to one poster in particular, who appears to have 6-7 posts per page.

Just a little introduction to you iCrap kids at what goes on in the real world on the posts about Apple COM-PU-TERS. Usually we power users just ignore the iCrap world, but this was just a wee too providential to pass up.

And try multitasking. And real keyboards. Already businesses and people don't answer 90% of their e-mail because they check it mobile, it's too hard to type, they think they'll "get to it later" and never do. Save for spam, e-mail used to have a 98% reply rate. Mobility has completely killed the viability of e-mail for business.

Look. Smart people are going to WANT to be able to leave their WORK at their DESKS.

The dumb? Who cares?

Design feature. Why sell one iPhone to a mark when you can sell 3-5 in the space of one desktop computer? The only thing smart about a smartphone is how smart its consumers aren't.

Smart people like to be incommunicado. And leave their work, and their boss, at their desks. And avoid slippery, overpriced things that don't work when you hold them the way, uh, probably 90% of all people do.

But that's just me and my warped take on the world.

Touché...
I did go back to my old 3G which is indeed a plastic phone.

Never liked the 3G's design as much as my 2G with its (mostly) aluminum body (though EDGE was just too slow compared to 3G).
I was really looking forward to moving back to metal and glass with the iPhone 4.

Psst...here's a little secret: other smartphones with glass screens also crack when you drop them from a standing height.
True that.
But because the iPhone 4 has two glass sides its chance of breaking after a drop is also twice as high. So you should be twice as paranoid!
With a plastic phone you have at least a 50% chance it falls onto the plastic side...

People can rant and complain all they want, but the sad truth is this: The only way to actually hurt (for lack of a better term) Apple, is at their pockets. And let's be honest here, do any of you really think that millions of iPhone 4 purchasers are going to return the phone?

No way in hell.

Do you think that people will stop lining up to buy it, and Apple will just have iPhones sitting on the shelves collecting dust?

Of course not.

People will still buy it. People with issues will either deal with it or buy a case. Sure, a few thousand (I'm being generous here) of level headed people will return the phone. But that's not nearly enough to make Apple even flinch.

Perhaps we can hope for an "iPhone Classic Edition" with the new internals and the original body. I love that thing. I haven't been able to bring myself to sell it yet (the wife had it until she got my 3GS and I got the 4). Just sitting here on my desk, looking pretty and waiting for me to decide what to do with it.

But because the iPhone 4 has two glass sides its chance of breaking after a drop is also twice as high. So you should be twice as paranoid!

Believe me, I am twice as paranoid. :(

I'm more paranoid from its slippery factor than from the double glass jeopardy.

I was really hoping the rumors of some sort of high-tech bulletproof ceramic back panel would come to fruition.

Lunatic. Absolutely ******* crazy lunatic.

Yeah, you're right. You can smell other people through your computer, which is a superability that I suppose comes from being a "pro" user. Not worth arguing with you at this point. You are obviously deranged.

And since you obviously know how to run a better business than Steve Jobs, I don't see why you need to sit here complaining about Apple. Why don't you just go off and found your own computer company, and show Apple how to do things right, hm?

Incidentally, let me give you a tip on how to stop Steve Jobs from "controlling your mind". The tin-foil hats only stop the radio waves, you see. There are also odors transmitted through your computer, as you are clearly well aware. So, you'd best protect yourself from the mind-control fumes. I'd suggest you put a plastic bag over your head, and tie it tight around your neck not to let any of the noxious mind-control fumes from getting through. After about 10-15 minutes, you should be "purified". Seriously. Do it.

Byron, I've done loads of testing (in northern England) with all the iPhones on 3 different networks, the results are always the same.

ANY other kind of phone will hold its signal better (sometimes by a large margin) than the iPhone.

If you can, just speak to the exec relations/complaints guys of any of the major networks in the UK ..... off the record of course. They'll tell you their stats...... its frightening!

You are one of the biggest Apple basher of the forum and do you expect someone really trust you on a "test" like that ?
Sure ....

its not really to do with dropping calls, its where you would get signal on a 'better' phone and where the carrier network maps show you SHOULD get a signal, then on any iPhone you don't.

the level of complaints eg. O2 get about signal issues with iPhone (any) is 20 times higher than they get with all the other phones added together! (adjusted for sales volume) .... of course..they won't tell you that;)
And they told you because, you know, you are a very important people, uh ?
You clearly are an insider, with access to secret statistics.
Sure ....

Nice try, go ahead.

It's even got users dreaming of "software" fixes "coming soon" which may be the case, but who's going to wait for a software fix while their phone can't make calls.

I have 120 minutes on my iPhone 4 which supposedly can't make calls. My spouse has 200 minutes on theirs.

In fact, my iPhone 4 holds on to calls in my office where my iPhone 1 couldn't keep a signal.

My spouse has an iPhone 4 and loves it and has never looked at a discussion forum about anything. I have two coworkers who love their iPhone 4s and they don't go to discussion forums either.

Despite what _we_ might want to think the world does not revolve around MacRumors.

35 year old parents of teenagers? You really think there are that many teenage mom's who are buying iPhone now for their 13, 14 year old kids?

Are you bad at math? I am in that age range, and I have several friends in that age range with kids who just graduated high school. It is not beyond the realm of possible.

Also, I have several friends who have bought iPhones for their 14 or 15 year olds. I would not, ours get the cheapo free phones as long as they have keyboards for texting...

But yes, there are probably a LOT of 35 to 40 year olds who have bought iPhones for their kids.

What part? Sounded spot on to me. CR is a gold standard as far as reviews go. I expect to see mention of this in several upcoming news reports on this issue.

Gold standard? Maybe by you and other misinformed individuals. Nobody takes CR seriously. They are a joke, and their rating system is HIGHLY FLAWED.

Believe me, I am twice as paranoid. :(
Will be interesting to see over time how many more people need a front or back replacement for the iPhone 4 - compared to all previous iPhone models.
Simply because the phone slipped off a surface or got dropped due to people not holding it with their full hands (while trying to avoid the grip of death).

I always found it a bit odd that the iPhone 4's memory capacity is not mentioned on its backside anymore.
Perhaps this is in anticipation of many more cracked backsides that will need replacing - which would be a logistical burden to stock with different memory capacity imprints... Just have one back for all.

Let's just hope Apple can fix this antenna issue with smart software.
Perhaps it is indeed possible to detect skin contact via a specific pattern of signal drop - and then immediately compensate for these changes before the signal is completely lost.
Might not be the perfect solution but perhaps good enough.

In the meantime, as likwidplastik said, I don't think enough people will actually return their iPhone 4 to make a difference.
The sales person I talked to at the Apple hotline told me that I was the 3rd person to return the phone (that this person encountered).
I guess most people would just suck up to it and live with the reception issue, or buy a big case for it, or use tape. After all the phone has so many nice features that it really is tempting to just keep it regardless.

Even if a small percentage actually returns their phones or delays their buying decision, I'd bet Apple is actually pleased as it takes off sales pressure as the phone is still in short supply in many areas.

Currently it's more a mindshare and marketing issue than an immediate financial issue.
Yet that mindshare issue might give Android a boost in a way that could hurt Apple in the longer term.
Apple products could lose their 'gloss factor' in the public opinion.
So the issue should be addressed ASAP and not wait until January's Verizon model...

Relax people. Apple is gonna sell 10 million of these things by the end of the year and 10 million more iPads. It's an :apple: world, we all just live in it.

Its just such a stupid thing to say, desktops wont be dead untill we have laptops which equal them in power at something like a reasonable price.

Desktops don't match the power of mainframe computers (IBM Z series, et.al.). The latter certainly aren't dead. But very few people still care about them any more.

And a few people actually still need large trucks.

And do you know why people will still buy it? Because level headed people understand that the iPhone 4 is still the best phone on the market.

You want to hurt Apple? Make a better product.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good. Go home and finish your Twilight books that you bought from Wal-Mart.

I understand A LOT of people will see this ranking, and CR still holds a lot of clout, but that doesn't change the fact that they are on the decline and their system is in need of an overhaul. Have you SERIOUSLY looked at CR for making a purchase? Savvy individuals just don't use CR.

Easy there tiger.
Some of us are not office based. Does that make us dumb?
I happen to survey buildings and deal with all my enquiries via mobile devices.
Does that make me dumb?
