Believe me, I am twice as paranoid.
Will be interesting to see over time how many more people need a front or back replacement for the iPhone 4 - compared to all previous iPhone models.
Simply because the phone slipped off a surface or got dropped due to people not holding it with their full hands (while trying to avoid the grip of death).
I always found it a bit odd that the iPhone 4's memory capacity is not mentioned on its backside anymore.
Perhaps this is in anticipation of many more cracked backsides that will need replacing - which would be a logistical burden to stock with different memory capacity imprints... Just have one back for all.
Let's just hope Apple can fix this antenna issue with smart software.
Perhaps it is indeed possible to detect skin contact via a specific pattern of signal drop - and then immediately compensate for these changes before the signal is completely lost.
Might not be the perfect solution but perhaps good enough.
In the meantime, as likwidplastik said, I don't think enough people will actually return their iPhone 4 to make a difference.
The sales person I talked to at the Apple hotline told me that I was the 3rd person to return the phone (that this person encountered).
I guess most people would just suck up to it and live with the reception issue, or buy a big case for it, or use tape. After all the phone has so many nice features that it really is tempting to just keep it regardless.
Even if a small percentage actually returns their phones or delays their buying decision, I'd bet Apple is actually pleased as it takes off sales pressure as the phone is still in short supply in many areas.
Currently it's more a mindshare and marketing issue than an immediate financial issue.
Yet that mindshare issue might give Android a boost in a way that could hurt Apple in the longer term.
Apple products could lose their 'gloss factor' in the public opinion.
So the issue should be addressed ASAP and not wait until January's Verizon model...
