a free bumper isn't the solution. it's like putting a little plaster on a broken arm. plus many of us want to use the phone naked, the way it was sold to us. a recall is the only way.

Heh - - the Apple h8trs are in total frenzy mode this morning.

It's sad that they can't take all that negative energy and apply it to something useful. :(

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good. Go home and finish your Twilight books that you bought from Wal-Mart.

I understand A LOT of people will see this ranking, and CR still holds a lot of clout, but that doesn't change the fact that they are on the decline and their system is in need of an overhaul. Have you SERIOUSLY looked at CR for making a purchase? Savvy individuals just don't use CR.

I don't agree. Savvy individuals use CR as one of MANY tools to research a product. Nobody should rely on one source.

I haven't caught up on every page of this thread, but I didn't see CR's actual Smart Phone Ratings chart posted yet...

wow. fanboys are amazing. they are mad because CR is not recommending a phone that FAILS on the most basic function?

people would be up in arms if CR recommended a fancy, shiny looking car even though it's incapable of ... *gasp* driving...

Oh please. Do you have any idea how many phone calls have been successfully made on the iPhone 4? I've yet to drop a call. I'm not arguing this isn't a very real problem for some, but I will argue the hysteria dwarfs the reality right now.

This CR things is all over the mainstream news now and is sure making Apple look bad.

Apple PR is really bungling this issue. It's amateur hour over there. Steve needs to trigger a reset and fast. Fire some people, make a public statement, take some positive action, put out the fire.

You better believe the PR departments at Motorola, Verizon, Google, etc. are working overtime right now to pour gasoline on the fire.

I agree. Their stock price is down over $8 so far today. Apple has to step to the stage and address the CR report. Silence is defting.

I'd love to know what a slightly more unbiased poll tells us. I have 5 friends with new iphones. All are aware of the issue, all have worked around it and love their phones.

Apple definitely has an issue on their hands, but I'm fairly certain the sentiment in this board is a bit overblown compared to the rest of the world.

For me, if Apple today issued a recall, I wouldn't bother. Works great for me, and the experience compared to my sisters Droid is not comparable.

And for all those wishing ill-will on all things Apple, your reaction should be quite the opposite. The smartphone market is where its at because of Apple. We now have a viable competitor in Android, and a motivation by other companies to innovate because of the work Apple has done with the iphone.

Damage to Apple's reputation and to it's company as a whole is a lose for everyone regardless of your allegiance.

I don't wish ill-will to Apple, nor did I want to see them damage their reputation, but they are digging their own hole with this ongoing denial of the problem. I think most of us just want to see Apple back up its reputation by coming clean and issuing a real fix — not a kludgy workaround (bumper) and not some smoke and mirrors (displaying bars differently).

Psst...here's a little secret: other smartphones with glass screens also crack when you drop them from a standing height. It's true! You wouldn't know it (unless it's happened to you) because other brand phones with cracked screens don't make the evening news.

Psst... Here's another little secret: other smartphones are not making the outrageous claim that they are made out of the same glass used in the Space Shuttle or Stealth Bomber or whatever aircraft it was (I don't recall off the top of my head). So yes, when dropped from a standing height, it is rather alarming and YouTube worthy when such strong "gorilla" glass shatters just as easily as any other smart phone with regular strength glass.

Agree completely.

Yea I can agree..... questions: 1) do you have an IP4 without the signal problem? 2) are you holding out for the "fix"?

1) No, reception and proximity sensor problems
2) Until just before my 30 days it up, then it's going back for a refund if they don't fix it.

I hate to go back to my 3gs, but I need a PHONE

It is really unfortunate that Apple is removing the consumer report threads on the i phone 4 reviews, i found this entry quite useful for the unfortunate iPhone 4 users

cheers

I think Apple makes some of the most elegant products around, but their arrogance is and has always been disgusting. Apple loves to represent itself as the so called hip, cool, anti-establishment company, but you can see their heavy handed, arrogant, and true attitude in their actions like deleting posts from their support forums. It’s a practice long employed by Apple.

If your post is too critical, there is a good chance it will be deleted and you will receive an email warning that your support account may be terminated if you don’t “change your ways”. When MobileMe was released, it was a complete fiasco. Many people complained via the Apple forums and subsequently had their posts deleted as well as receiving a “warning email” that their account may be terminated.

Apple’s position has been that their support forums are a place to ask questions and receive answers, but support forums are also a place to point out problems in the pursuit of seeking answers. True, sometimes a support forum thread can descend into a “bitch session”. This is going to happen and is simply part of an open, unfettered discussion. Instead of deleting posts, Apple should have the guts to face their critics directly instead of telling them to “hold the phone in a different manor” and deleting posts.

#1 - a person should not have to hold the phone in a special way
#2 - a beautiful device like this should NOT have to be covered up in a bumper case; it should be a choice made for protection rather then enabling functionality

Discuss.

But in the end it's all a nothing issue. There are no reports of mass returns and Apple continues to make obscene profits. They have exceeded MSFT net worth and soon to exceed profitability as well. the iPad is a runaway success, this iPhone 4 thing is just a tiny blip.

Agreed.

If anything, this news will accelerate the progress of the firmware fix and antenna insulation solutions.

With the earnings report coming out a week from today, things are likely to be more clarified, by then.

AAPL down almost 2% when the S&P is up round 2%.. can't be good.

AAPL up 6 points from earlier this morning.
