Computers don’t always deliver the full power of Apple’s charger.

When I sync with my old white iMac, my iPad 2 doesn’t charge (nor does it lose all that much). There just isn’t sufficient power from the USB port.

Loss of 2% in an hour isn’t critical; it would take over 2 full days to drain, and your synch will be done long before that. I don’t think the issue you’re seeing is the “heavy load” issue, which would be seen in high-end games, for instance (and is kind of to be expected—physics is physics).

This is absolutely correct. Computer ports typically provide around 5W of power, whereas apple's power adapter gives 10W.

Man slow news day. Of course it gets hotter, it has a quad core GPU. It's still under an acceptable level. In other news, Tom Cruise is gay. End or story.

CR needs to report that the sky is blue. Water is wet. Ice is cold, and most of all fire is hot. Specially if you get closer to it or make it bigger. Like a match stick is cooler than a bon fire. :p

Yeah, I said it won't charge while using it in the forums days ago. Other people did too, it's not a major problem for me. But it's true guys/gals so don't think they're making stuff up.

Honestly I agree with CR, both then and now. They were right to ding Apple for the antenna problems with the iPhone 4, and they are right to ding them for shipping a device where the battery drains even when you have it plugged in.

The "iPad 3" may be fantastic, but CR is pointing out valid concerns - concerns that have me waiting to buy the iPad 3 until these concerns are fleshed out a bit more.

I'm with you. I noticed that my iPad will lose charge when I'm using it while connected to the computer and I was surprised and a little disappointed. Seems like a very valid issue to point out by CR or anyone else.

I honestly don't care if it's a limitation of the USB port or not. The fact is that it was a surprise and a disappointment.

It is interesting how defensive people get about these devices though. It's not a member of your family!

Well, Apple has this thing called a warranty. If it fails, go exchange it. If you purchased the Apple care, good for you. If you are going to be OCD about it and can't handle the heat, return it. I personally plan on punishing my iPad and see if I can replicate. I'm not sure they can do much to fix the heat issue though. At least with the charging issue they could potentially make available a higher watt charger.

Not trying to invoke the name of Jobs as an extreme, but I really don't think he would've tolerated all the compromises of this iPad. The larger thickness, the heat, the charging, all very "non-Apple".

Apple products have always stood head and shoulders above the rest because of little refinements that make the product simple and a joy to use. This iPad seems to take a step back from that.

Judging by the development time it takes to build a product like this, I'm sure he was involved heavily. Everyone wants to jump at any imperfection and say "Steve wouldn't have done that!", but it just isn't true in most cases.

My iPhone 4S does the same thing when I use Navigon and Spotify on extreme quality at the same time.

I traveled a 4 hour drive and my battery was 5 percent less then when I started when I was charging the entire time.

I was a little surprised it did that, but I would much rather it do that, then fry my phone.

first time i had to charge the ipad 3 i let the battery drain to about 5% (just incase the theory of draining it totally before first charge works) so i left it charging for a while to come back to it a couple hours later and the thing felt like it was on fire... i mean it wasn't really that hot but to the point where i got worried and took it out of the case and unplugged it from the 10v power source... i then noticed that it never even charged up.. im not sure what was running in the background or if it was doing a wifi sync but called up apple and they told me to do a hard reset (hold and press home + sleep button) and it actually did solve the problem... for now at least... i did notice that it takes a long time charge still though... hopefully it'll be fixed by a system update ....

This is absolutely correct. Computer ports typically provide around 5W of power, whereas apple's power adapter gives 10W.

The iMac should come with enough power to charge an iPad while it's being used, but I could be wrong.

My iPad would charge on a regular USB Port if it's OFF.

I can even charge it with an iPod USB Charger (5W) if not under heavy use.

I bet there'll be a silent revision of The New iPad this year and maybe a recall years later the way it was made with iPod Nano.

These reports certainly will affect iPad 3 sales next months.

The charging thing is accurate in my own experience. I was watching a movie on Netflix while the iPad was plugged into my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 model) and the charge percentage remained constant through the 2 hours it was playing.

Laptops get much warmer than the new ipad, no problem for me there.

But the ability to both charge and use the ipad (in certain instances) is ridiculous for a product on its 3rd cycle like this.

Come on Apple

As I've been told by an Apple employee before, they do not sell "laptops", they sell "notebooks". You are advised against placing their notebooks on your lap.

If the iPad does reach 113 degrees, that would make it someone uncomfortable for me to hold, which would sort of defeat the purpose.

If you wanted the thickness to stay the same then say goodbye to 9-10 hour battery usage. The heat and charge is an issue? Okay say good bye to the Retina display. The iPhone's retina display was much easier to design due to the amount of pixels it had relative to a retina display on the iPad.

People complain when Apple doesn't push new technology and when they do people complain about the tradeoffs.

Indeed. Apple really had little choice - they needed to keep average use about the same as previous iPads or consumers would instantly draw correlation between Apple and most Android phones (for example) that have big screens and battery life that isn't the same as the iPhone or iPad.

Sacrifices must always be made. I think Apple did a decent compromise. Barely thicker, maybe runs a little warmer - but faster GPU and better screen resolution. That doesn't mean the iPad is a perfect device - never was never will be. It's damn good. But if people are looking for perfect - they are deluding themselves.

Wtf is CR's beef with Apple?

I guess Consumer Reports won't recommend the new iPad because of this "excessive" heating.
CR is a joke.

CR is just reporting on what they noticed. You're making this out to be more than it is. Nowhere does that article say to avoid the iPad or does it say they don't recommend it. Sheesh!

consumer "hey my ipad wont charge while playing infinity blade 2"

Apple "Charge it when you have stopped playing, anyways who the hell has more than 5 hours a day to play games??"

Geek "Troll Alert, Batterygate usbgate newipadgate ihaventgotalifegate appleistheworstcompanyintheworldgate thisistheendofapplegate ihavedecidedtotakeupsellingslogansforgatesgate"

Me "I have a MBP and an iphone 4s, and a JOB, guess what i dont have time to play games that long, if i did i probably wouldnt have a gf wouldnt have a job and would probably be borderline anorexic and be anal about everything..."

My GF "why dont they just stop using the ipad when they want to charge it, why do they need to have it on all the time? havent they got anything better to do?"

Reality "There is either a hardware or software bug, if its hardware apple will need to find a way around it otherwise there will be alot more chinese people jumping off buildings, if its a software bug, then geeks will claim they know what the problem is and demand that apple fix it at once, normal people will claim that this is a disgrace and that apple should be hung on a tree *pun*"

Opinion "get a life"

Thank you

It doesn't even need to be "extremely heavy load" to prevent charging while plugged in. In my experience, any use of the new iPad while it is connected to the charger will prevent the battery from charging. It will maintain its current battery status without dropping under normal loads, but I have to leave my iPad alone before it starts to charge.

FWIW, this has not been my experience. My new iPad has managed to charge consistently, if slowly, under moderate load (browsing, marking up PDFs -- though I guess definitions will vary).

I saw the charging issue when using a 5w supply, but the 10w supply seems to always be able to charge it, though it is very slow to charge when running.

I wonder if CR had it plugged into a PC (most are only 5w ports), or had accidentally used an old 5w ipod charger (they look the same) like I did.

Even on a 10w supply though, the charging time is significantly longer. You won't be 'topping off' in between plane flights, particularly if you have it turned on.

+1 I was going to post almost the exact same thing. I also use the 10w to charge my iPhone- sooooo fast.

A lot of modern PC motherboards now support up to 10w- my ASUS mobo has optional software that detects if it is an Apple product and bumps the port from 5w to 10w. http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/

I totally agree on the topping off.

You don't think so? So they came up with this design the day after he died?

Really? Oversimplification much? Jobs was most likely involved heavily in all the products that will be released in the coming years, but that doesn't mean he could predict the technical requirements of every product refresh. He was not an engineer.

Jobs was a businessman with a philosophy - but there is no way he could predict where the technology of displays, processors, battery efficiency, etc would be at the time of march 2012, as all these things are variable and subject to delays etc. Just because he may have been involved in the "idea" of the retina display doesn't mean he would have thought it would have been ready for release with the "drawbacks" (under what seems to have been apple trend; thinner, less battery consumption, cooler) that are required for release at this time.

Although personally I do not think it is an issue, it does seem odd by apple philosophy and pattern.

yeah okay

I love seeing these sort of "hater" efforts. Apple has devices with some of the best battery life in the industry. So what if it doesn't charge as well under high load? (I love how they use Infinity Blade II to test it) When I used Android phones the battery would drain while charging from just playing a video!
