W It's people like you and others who hold Apple to ridiculous standards.

No it's not people like him. Go take a look at threads for the iPhone, iPad and other devices where there are numerous "complaints" about screen color, dust under the screen, batteries not running long enough, yadda yadda yadda. I'd say the die-hard apple fans are the ones that hold Apple more to ridiculous standards than anyone else.

Really? CR saying it can't charge under heavy loads is a non-issue to you?

Consumer reports is hardly a reliable source. When I used to sell digital cameras back when they first came out Consumer Reports consistently rated the worst models the highest and the best models the lowest. They did the same with audio equipment.

The publication is a joke.

Not to mention I was able to recreate their test exactly and my iPad didn't reach anywhere close to 116 degrees nor did I ever have a problem charging it.

Consumer Reports = joke.

I really like to know how much it cost to charge one of these things because my electric bill has been going up real high since I bought the second iPad. Iv'e owned them all day one purchases on all of them. Sure they last a long time on a charge but what is the cost to charge it?

pure guess but it's a 42 watt hour battery so if we say the charger is 80% efficient it would take ~52 watts to charge it.

so you would have to charge it 19 time to use 1kW which is about 25p in the UK.

so it would cost 25p for 19 charges, that doesn't sound right so someone else should probably do the calculations.

edit: no it sounds about right, it's a 10W charger and takes about 6-7 hours to charge that's 60-70 watts used so that's at worst 14 charges per kW, so 14 charges for 25p.

*sigh*
So this is the new antennagate. As many people here have already stated, it gets warm but not anywhere close to unbearably hot. All I can do is confirm this through personal experience.

Yeah, it's just like all those idiots who complained the iPhone 4 dropped so many calls because the phone had an antenna issue, which we now know is true and which forced me to sell my phone and get a 3GS back for business purposes.

Imagine, haters wanting to have a device that works properly after paying hundreds of dollar, the audacity! Better vote their comments down and hug each others like the good little brainwashed fans we are.

Just put some Water-gate on it. It'll be fine.

Connected to my Apple 27" Cinema display (and unused), mine takes 11 hours to charge

As far as the battery not charging and continuing to drain while plugged in ... I own an iPad 2 and have been complaining about this from virtually day one, so this is not new (albeit clearly more pervasive now that people are picking up on it so quickly)... When I run splashtop streamer my battery still continues to drain, albeit very slowly (like it would take about 40 or more straight hours to drain) and has since the day I got my iPad 2.

Good grief. Its an iPad with a quad core GPU. Heat has to be dissipated somewhere and if its gonna be put under heavy load its gonna get warm and that heat has to leave.

Its not like your gonna be playing a game for 5/6 hours non stop on the ipad. You will charge it when your finished.

Its obviously a slow day for rumours so all of this is just another thing to make you yawn and move on. Is for me anyways.

My ipad(3) gets warm but its not burning uncomfortably while in use. And yes ive put it under load.

Another thing...the GPU is in one corner, you can quite easily turn the ipad around...

Just sayin.

So the iPad gets a little warm. Excuse me whilst I fall to my knees, crying and self-flagellating. People need to get an idea of what really matters instead of finding things to moan about.
Mine gets *slightly* warm, and it's inside a leather case. Big bloody deal.
And as for charging, well mine was used pretty heavily on a train, charging from the train's power supply, which will not supply a heavy load, and it charged fine. I wonder if the supply issues are in certain countries? This is just a mindless wonderings from a noob who is on his first ever Apple product after years of resisting them. So I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about, or pretend to do so. All I know is what I have experienced- i.e no problems and an awesome device. I guess there will always be people who will pick faults. I should know. I used to be one of them.:) :apple: convert! :D

All I know is that looks like you didn't make a big deal. However, the screen is awesome.

You do know they include price in their rankings right? So, its very often the case that the "best" is the worst "value".

I think people are also missing the point about how this is a NAKED iPad getting very warm. What about those people who have leather cases? From my experience, the new iPad does get uncomfortably hot when in a case. :(

Anyway, I don't much care for this being downplayed, so we'll see how it pans out. While I agree that the quad-core GPU etc will cause the device to run hotter, it's certainly an issue for some owners, including this one. While playing Infinity Blade 2, I just wasn't very happy with the new iPad in my lap.

This!

I'm still buying one of these. (I'm using the ones at work I'm configuring for the big wigs since they get them before the IT department does  Spoiled....)

My iPad 2 will slowly drain (while plugged in) while in a google hangout. This is nothing new to the new iPad.

CR didn't just "ding" Apple on the iPhone 4 antenna - they went as far as to specifically recommend *no one purchase* what became the greatest selling and most loved phone in history. It was an absolutely baffling move by CR.
What was baffling about it?
CR has a set of criteria they use to test products.
If a product doesn't meet that criteria, they give it a "not recommended" rating.
Popularity of a product should never be used as a barometer for testing a devices functionality.

Some of their recommendations have confused me in the past as well, but when you look at their overall track record, they still give some of the most impartial and objective advice out there.

Oh gawd. Here we go.

Edit: I've owned the iPad in my sig since early on day 1 and have put heavy use on it. I've noticed nothing that concerns me.

Hey folks.....after 45 minutes of Inifinity Blade II, take a break, get a life....I hear there is a 3D World outside with incredible Retina Graphics.

It charges at 10w.
For example, charging 5 hours would be .05 kWh.
Charging 5 hours 20 times would be 1 kWh.
1 kWh in the U.S. averages about 11 cents.
So about 1.1 cents for every 10 hours of charging.

I think something else was raising your electric bill.

maybe im crazy but I have charged every ipad I have owned (all 3) at night well im sleeping. If it wasnt for this report I would have never even knew that this "problem" existed. So anyone saying your going to return it over this.....really? How do you use it on that short ass cord well plugged in anyway haha.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Not just me who thinks the supplied cord is tiny then! Meh....for me an almost insignificant issue since I use it the same way as you- plugged in whilst I'm sleeping.

What a FAIL...

Back to my half the price costing 64GB uber multitasking playbook running circles around ipad.

And no I don't need 1+Million badly written apps...

right. if you choose to use a blackberry anything you are officially not allowed to call anything else "badly written"
