I noticed the inability of the iPad to charge last night as soon as I got it. I plugged it in and started to do an iCloud restore and the power kept draining even though it was plugged in. Albeit slowly, but it did indeed keep draining.

I also notice this on my iPhone when I have it plugged into my car AC adapter and have WAZE running. In fact, in this scenario the iPhone overheats and shutdowns after an hour of running Waze. Happens every time.

USB ports don't magically provide infinite power nor does future product releases constitute lower power requirements...especially with retina display and a quad-core gpu, it was going to eventually be surpassed.

Might as well say that you can't charge and use your MacBook Pro using another computer's USB port.

Of course it definitely is a valid concern, but what can Apple can do to rectify it? You have a device which surpasses many people's TV resolutions as well as the ability to produce 3D graphics that can rival console games. Best case but unlikely scenario is that it's a bug in the code, but most likely, it's the limit of the USB port compared to the power the device requires.

Despite all I said, it definitely does make me think twice about whether or not I'm going to purchase the new iPad.

I don't know too many Phoenicians that sit out on their patio in the 110 F heat, warm iPad or not.

So Apple should warn owners with a message: "use it only in climatized environments". Here in Brazil at least it's pretty common using a tablet in a non-climatized room under temperatures around 30ºC.

What a FAIL...

Back to my half the price costing 64GB uber multitasking playbook running circles around ipad.

And no I don't need 1+Million badly written apps...

Steve Jobs in heaven: "Keep talking about it. It's doesn't matter you're trashing it out - just keep talking. At the end, when people figure out it's not a big deal, it ends up being product marketing."

Same problem with the new MacBook Pros... It's quite frustrating, actually. Especially since, to my knowledge, Apple has ignored it. I could be wrong...

I really like to know how much it cost to charge one of these things because my electric bill has been going up real high since I bought the second iPad. Iv'e owned them all day one purchases on all of them. Sure they last a long time on a charge but what is the cost to charge it?

Yeah, a consumer protection and info company taking on a company who markets its products as perfect and the best of the best despite the flaws. the nerve of consumer reports!

/rant.

back to the macrumors motto

NOTHING TO SEE HERE! ALL IS WELL!!!

What company doesn't market there product as perfect? Isn't it common sense for companies to show there products in the best possible light? It's people like you and others who hold Apple to ridiculous standards.

Heat.

So the iPad gets a little warm. Excuse me whilst I fall to my knees, crying and self-flagellating. People need to get an idea of what really matters instead of finding things to moan about.
Mine gets *slightly* warm, and it's inside a leather case. Big bloody deal.
And as for charging, well mine was used pretty heavily on a train, charging from the train's power supply, which will not supply a heavy load, and it charged fine. I wonder if the supply issues are in certain countries? This is just a mindless wonderings from a noob who is on his first ever Apple product after years of resisting them. So I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about, or pretend to do so. All I know is what I have experienced- i.e no problems and an awesome device. I guess there will always be people who will pick faults. I should know. I used to be one of them.:) :apple: convert! :D

that's a point,

if you have the iPad in a case then it will just get hotter and hotter like wearing a coat because it can't get rid of the heat as effectively.

good job I'm a naked fanboy :D:p

Cheaper than a computer.

Honestly I agree with CR, both then and now. They were right to ding Apple for the antenna problems with the iPhone 4, and they are right to ding them for shipping a device where the battery drains even when you have it plugged in.

The "iPad 3" may be fantastic, but CR is pointing out valid concerns - concerns that have me waiting to buy the iPad 3 until these concerns are fleshed out a bit more.

CR didn't just "ding" Apple on the iPhone 4 antenna - they went as far as to specifically recommend *no one purchase* what became the greatest selling and most loved phone in history. It was an absolutely baffling move by CR.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A406 Safari/7534.48.3)

I've noticed when I'm using my iPhone 4s under heavy load while charging, it will sometimes drain the battery.

So as far as I'm concerned this happens in more devices than the new iPad.

So by jury rigging or not using a device under some typical use cases - that makes it a non-issue. Ok.

I don't think it's a big issue. But it's not a non-issue. A non-issue implies that there's no issue. As in Zero. I think that's not accurate here.

It's a non-issue for me as I understand that for my macbook pro and my ipad 3 they won't charge up under heavy load.

This may be an issue for others. I think it's just something to be aware of... if you are going to do some gaming on the ipad 3 make sure that there is some charge left before you start and plug it in.

It's seems that under extremely heavy processor usage, the iPad is unable to draw sufficient power from its USB connection to both power the device and charge the battery simultaneously.

Why is this news? Same thing happens with my 2011 MBP when I play games -- battery goes to zero after a while -- and that's with a regular magsafe power supply.

Does anyone think that the non-charging under load may be by design (as opposed to a bug)? If the iPad is getting hot under load, would charging at the same time make it even hotter? Maybe they are just doing this as a work-around?

maybe im crazy but I have charged every ipad I have owned (all 3) at night well im sleeping. If it wasnt for this report I would have never even knew that this "problem" existed. So anyone saying your going to return it over this.....really? How do you use it on that short ass cord well plugged in anyway haha.

I truly feel sorry for you.

Playbook?? ROTFLMAO :D

Same to you man.. same to you..
Let's wait and see summer when people forget their ipad in the car...

See if it will still be within "apples thermal specification" , certainly not in mine..
