The camera in my iPhone X is superb for a device that fits in my pocket. No complaints.

That's just how it is, nothing wrong-wrong with X it works as intended but if someone goes out to claim it's the best camera on the market that's a bit too much cause there are way too obvious drawbacks and compromises. Once again I'm surprised about how no one talks about video quality that it captures, it's completely unacceptable for a $1000 phone.

The Internet is chock full of people wanting to give their opinion on amything and everything. Some are very well thought out and backed up with evidence. Some, like Consumer Reports, are absolute garbage.

I’m sure the iPhone X has an outstanding camera. But I’m also sure if you lined up photos from the phones on their top ten list next to each other I would not be able to tell how one was any better than the other.

Really doubt it. I love Apple and would never use anything but an iPhone, but the camera always seems to be step or two behind Galaxy. Galaxy pics seem to be more vivid and alive

Consumer reports...horrible... Unless, of course, it’s a positive review... :)

No.. always horrible.

They just over saturate. That doesn't make them better. Apple goes for more realistic colors. It's by design.

You're probably right. I would imagine someone with a trained eye would prefer Apple pictures. Funny, same thing with Samsung TVs, they always over saturate, especially in demo mode at the store

Where's the Pixel 2?
Meanwhile the list from DxO labs.....

Apple's newest flagship device, the iPhone X, has the best smartphone camera currently available according to new rankings published this week by Consumer Reports.

iphonexrearcamera-1.jpg

Furthermore, Apple devices took up most of the spots on Consumer Reports' list of top 10 smartphone cameras, with the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus following the iPhone X. The iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and 6 Plus also earned top 10 spots.
  1. Apple iPhone X
  2. Apple iPhone 8
  3. Apple iPhone 8 Plus
  4. Samsung Galaxy S8+
  5. Apple iPhone 7
  6. Apple iPhone 6s Plus
  7. Samsung Galaxy S8
  8. Samsung Galaxy Note8
  9. Apple iPhone 7 Plus
  10. Samsung Galaxy S8 Active
Introduced in November, the iPhone X has two 12-megapixel rear lenses arranged in a vertical orientation, one that's an f/1.8 aperture wide-angle lens and an f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens. These lenses are combined with features unique to Apple like an Apple-designed image signal processor with advanced pixel processing, improved color filters, a better sensor, faster autofocus, and optical image stabilization for both the telephoto and the wide-angle lenses, a first for an iPhone.

The iPhone X's rear camera is combined with the front-facing TrueDepth camera system that enables neat features like a selfie Portrait Mode, which blurs the background of a selfie image and sets it apart from the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

Apple has also done a lot of work on software to complement the camera offerings on the iPhone X, introducing features like Portrait Lighting for adding studio-quality lighting effects to your images. The result of all of these features is the best camera that's been introduced in an iPhone to date, and it's been highly praised in reviews and evaluations.

Photographer Austin Mann, for example, said the iPhone X camera was the "most exciting" upgrade he'd seen since he switched from a Blackberry 7230 to the original iPhone back in 2007. Photography site DxO gave the iPhone X's camera a score of 97, higher than any other iPhone, while DPReview, another noted photography review site said it is capable of "extremely impressive" results.

Apple smartphones have long been some of the most widely used and popular cameras available, topping the list of Flickr's most popular camera for multiple years running. The iPhone's popularity as a photography device has spurred Apple to make continuous improvements to photo quality with each new iteration, and iPhone image quality is now at the point where it comes close to offering the kind of effects you can get with a DSLR camera.

Consumer Reports' current list does not include the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+, and it will be interesting to see how Samsung's newest devices measure up to the iPhone X. Both of Samsung's latest smartphones feature Dual Aperture 12-megapixel lenses with f/1.5 and f/2.4 modes, with the lenses able to switch between these two apertures depending on the lighting conditions.

This kind of Dual Aperture functionality is useful for finding a balance between light and image quality. The f/1.5 lens is useful in low lighting conditions because it lets in more light, but with a wider aperture comes a compromise in image sharpness in certain areas of the photo. Therefore, in conditions where the lighting is better, the f/2.4 lens that's also included will provide a crisper, higher-quality image.

This news is expected as iPhone X is the best iPhone in the iPhone history up to date due to the redesign including the beautiful notch, the latest and most advanced technology including superb Face ID technology. Fortunate for me and others who are able to have this best iPhone since the launch date without any issues.

That is what I was thinking. From everything I have seen the camera on the Pixel 2 phones are incredible. My friend has one and his photos are always just a little better than my iPhone X. More detail and definitely better in low light. I don't know what magic Google is doing but it is pretty darn impressive. Hopefully Apple can catch up in computational photography.

Here is one explanation from an Android site: https://www.androidpit.com/camera-blind-test-results-samsung-apple-on-top-pixel-2-tanks

In any comparisons to phones such as Pixel2, cameras should have the HDR mode turned for an even comparison, because from what I understand Pixel2 performs HDR style processing to every photo taken. I don't see the information presented as to whether iPhone HDR mode was turned on.

Nowadays overall photo quality in the cheaper flagship phones has gone up so much, that without such a direct comparison, it is much more difficult to notice dramatic differences in photo quality, especially during casual, everyday use.

Just LOL.

Some site comes out and says Galaxy S9 has the best camera, so then MacRumors scrapes the web to find an irrelevant pre-S9 article to boast about how good the iPhone X camera is. What sad Fox like article writing.

Obviously if Consumer Reports didn't test with the S9 this article is irrelevant and just a self-ingratiating placebo for Apple fanbois insecure that someone else might actually make a better phone camera or phone.

Notch adepts are invited to increase the size of the notch with black tape, making it more prominent and galactic in its shere beauty.

As an iPhone owner...Any best smartphone camera list that doesn't even include the Pixel 2 is a joke of a list. It's shots often leave me jealous.

Consumer Reports thought they were clever with their timing right after Galaxy S9/S9+ announcement but DxO just one upped them by taking away their credibility and future product placement revenue. These companies are too clever for the average consumer.

The X camera is one of the reasons I want one, the 8 is very good and blows the 7 away, it doesn’t had the exposure problem as much.

how is it in comparison to current competitors?
[doublepost=1519964480][/doublepost]
It does. Bree Fowler needs her head examined. Also needs to be fired from Consumer Reports.

You seem very upset about a review that doesn't match your agenda :) . It's just toys. Get over it and take things easy.

I don’t know as I hadn’t teies them, I don’t go by the famous review site as it claims the Pixel is a Camera miracle almost, yet when I see its phones compared to the X I prefer the X. I also think the Note 8 camera is extemely good even if it’s colours are a bit over done.
The iPhone has always tended to lean slightly more to natural photos and colours and I prefer that :)
However we will have to see how this variable aperture tech works on a smartphone camera in real life.

While I may not alter a purchase design based on a CR review, I would go to them first before, dxo, displaymate or especially Youtube.
