It's still new tech for a new year. Which they were working on for a good amount of time before release. New tech is always coming out so it should only be improved from last years upgrades.
Consumer Reports always supports Apple. Do you remember what they said for the Macbook Pro 2016?
they changed all their reports in three days. Members of the Macrumors forum were very angry about it.

They changed their reports as they messed up by testing it wrong.

Consumer reports...horrible... Unless, of course, it’s a positive review... :)
Nope. They're still terrible. They basically lost all credibility listing the non plus models ahead of the plus models and not including either of the pixels, which are just as good if not better than the best iPhone cameras.

Consumer reports saying something positive about Apple? Usually it’s the opposite in some respects.

I can’t attest to other smart phone cameras, but the iPhone X takes stellar photo’s.

Would you like me to literally scan 10 years worth of tech articles from old issues, as a loyal subscriber, and take a highlighter to MacBook Pro, iPads & iPhones rating it highest? I can, but it will take a while.

Seems Apple extremists are still stinging that CR dinged the HomePod for sounding sensational but being limited in use with a sub-sub-par assistant.

hard to take what they say seriously anymore in fairness.

You DO realize they literally buy all the products they test in the wild. Subscrition costs go to fund those purchases.

It's not like ad-based long time (Apple) fanboi magazine Wired getting freebies & also makes their bread & butter from ads from Apple & 2nd party accessories.

It's Apple. You're always doing -something- wrong.

I'm surprised the differences in camera are still considered such points of distinction. They're all bloody amazing and who is actually going to notice much improvement? Plus the X is $NZ500 more expensive than the likes of the S8+, and that surely isn't all paying for the notch lol :D

ok,, but you'd think with all the "verification" (They do verify stuff don't they?) by "other" people cecking others work is correct, you would think the possibility of false tests would be low .

You telling me 5 people could of missed the same thing ?

Where's the Pixel 2?
No kidding. I mean, you can't talk amazing phone camera and not mention the Pixel 2...which is the best anywhere, period the end. It's amazing...DSLR like. Yes, really.

So yeah, this post is instantly dismissed as it's clearly lacking credibility. Nice circlejerk tho.

For those who don't read Consumer Reports regularly: they have tested the Pixels, they just didn't rank in the top 10 for camera performance. They ranked all of the phones in this "Top 10" "Very Good" for image quality (none got an "Excellent" rating), but the iPhone variants pulled ahead of the others because they got an "Excellent" rating for HD video recording.

The Pixels are out of this Top 10 because of their combined scores for other features - i.e., they weighted the camera performance first, but where there were ties (i.e., many of the top 20+ phones scored similarly), it appears they went by their overall rating, and the Pixels are JUST out of the top 10. They did state in the article that the variation between any of the top phones is minimal, in their opinion.

All I could read was that these phone were amongst the top 10.
Not being a paid subscriber, I couldn't read the whole article and it didn't show a 1-10 list.

Is anyone here a subscriber?

Consumer Reports Says Galaxy S9+ Offers the Best Smartphone Camera
[doublepost=1519866941][/doublepost]
I too am surprised by the 8 besting the 8 plus. Makes no sense to me. I have the 8 and to me the pictures it takes seem to have poorer resolution than my old SE. I was expecting sharper and cleaner images.

My understanding was that the regular sensor for the plain 7 and 8 were superior to that used in the small camera in the 7 Plus and 8 Plus

RE: "Therefore, in conditions where the lighting is better, the f/2.4 lens that's also included will provide a crisper, higher-quality image."

NOT true for Motion Photography !

This is a great example of how their reports suffer from sampling bias. They sample their own subscribers. Quite simply the non-Plus models are more popular than the Plus models, and the Pixel 2 which definitely has a camera worth mentioning in the top 10, isn't a phone that sells anywhere near the same number of phones.

So what you get is skewed data where the more popular models end up more highly ranked.

IMO the Pixel 2, iPhone 8/X and Samsung S8 all deserve a place in the top 8. Arguably the X >> 8 Plus >> 8 because of the zoom lens, and this is coming from a Pixel 2 XL owner.

Thank you for this information.

How can they say the iPhone 8 has a better camera than the 8 plus  And how is the 7 so much better than the 7 plus? The plus variants have literally the exact same camera with an extra telephoto lens for Portrait mode, better zoom and better sharpness...
The top ten are all basically the same...

I quote Consumers Reports: "These phones are among the top overall performers in our smartphone ratings. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is our highest-rated model (though the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are due to enter our labs in March). But our lead phone tester, Richard Fisco, notes that from a camera-quality standpoint, there’s very little variation among the top 10 smartphones.

In fact, the differences among this group are so small that they could be chalked up to variations in our test samples, he says."

MacRumors has distorted the CR report by declaring iPhoneX is the best.

I’m as much of an Apple fanboy as you’ll find but the reflections on the iPhone X’s camera make it completely and absolutely unusable wherever there are lights. It’s like shooting through a window.

Here’s an example: https://twitter.com/metromanto/status/967256352228827137
The dancing lights that you can see towards the middle of the video is a reflection on the flat glass of the iPhone’s dual lens setup. There are some videos that simply can’t be used because of the absurd amount of reflections. I can’t believe this shipped.

No, that won’t be necessary. You would just be wasting your time because it doesn’t prove anything otherwise versus someone else having a view contrary to your own. Not to mention, if you would have actually read further in the thread, I commented that having a cynic like Consumer Reports isn’t always a bad thing either. Not everything good has to be said about an Apple product. That said, I will say, Consumer reports seems not to be appreciated as much as they used to be, and I’m not even referring to them with the reviews with Apple products.

Seems Apple extremists are still stinging that CR dinged the HomePod for sounding sensational but being limited in use with a sub-sub-par Assistant.

If you’re going to label me, at least label me a loyalist, not an extremist. That said, reviews don’t affect my perception. The only perception that matters is my own when I actually test the product. I could care less what somebody else says. The only opinion that matters is my own. By the way, you should test the HomePod, you might like it, it’s a great product.

8 better than 8+... 7 better than 7+?

Maybe there’s something that the testers at CR didn’t like related to the double lens setup which apparently was resolved with the enhanced (fixed?) double lens camera setup of the iPhone X. Maybe the OIS caused some issue. As you know, sometimes less is more or in this case, one lens delivered better results in key measurements of photo quality than two.

I know what you are trying to say here, and I agree.. however I think testing is not thorough enough if they were to reach those unlikely results.
