Consumer Reports does a good job reviewing cars, power tools, household appliances.

But for reviews on cameras and hi-fi audio equipment, CR is in a bit over its head. For these items, go to sites that specialize in photography and high-end audio equipment.
But not the blogs and YT reviewers.. they just spew spec sheets and never se
The X camera is one of the reasons I want one, the 8 is very good and blows the 7 away, it doesn’t had the exposure problem as much.
IMO the difference in IQ between 8/8+ and X is VERY minimal. The OIS on a zoom lens on a phone is more marketing than reality IMO.

They don't sell advertising. As such, clicks & views don't monetize unless someone buys a subscription from them. And they are giving away enough of this particular report for free to see where the iPhones rank vs. the other phones rated, so the "meat" of this particular info does NOT require anyone to spend a nickel.

As to "click bait," the point of click bait is to draw eyeballs to maximize ad revenue and/or sell something. We can imply that 1000 times in this thread- and probably will- but there is no typical point of "baiting" here. If we want to spin "click bait" we should be doing that with all of those other articles- including many pre-release "reviews"- that DO make much of their money on advertising and are thus highly motivated to stay on Apple's good side to get advanced peeks at Apple products to be among the very first with "reviews." Do we scrutinize that kind of press so very hard... even imply stuff with tags like "click bait" and similar? Of course not. Think!

My statement was quite concise - I didn't suggest CR was trying to monetize anything, just remain relevant...in a time when more people look to Youtube and Amazon for reviews, not to mention the multitude of tech websites that review product like this. I would bet that if you looked at CR's demographic, it's likely heavily weighted to people over 55 years old, who relied on CR back when they were effectively the only game in town for product reviews of any kind - that were somewhat unbiased.

If mobile camera market consists of Apple and Samsung then maybe yeah but with all other out there it's absolutely not.

Video that comes from iPhone X is utter garbage. When it comes to still imagery, it over exposes very good lit interior scenes, it warms up skin tones and fails, it oversaturates landscape shots like an amateur retouching landscape photography in Photoshop but on top of it all it's image post processing often gets confuses and it just does weird things.

I personally prefer neutral and well balanced shots and that's something Iphon X can't give it to me. But once again Video is a joke.

Maybe you should schedule a visit to the Genius Bar and have your phone checked out?

The camera in my iPhone X is superb for a device that fits in my pocket. No complaints.

Utter garbage is a bit much but he’s right on the saturation vs 7 & 6 models. Some are over the top.

So when the iPhone X Plus comes out this year the older iPhone X will still be better?

I have the 8 and I'm not incredibly impressed with the camera - very contrasty in bright light, maybe I need practice with it. But still a lot better than my old 5S. :)

  1. Apple iPhone X
  2. Apple iPhone 8
  3. Apple iPhone 8 Plus
  4. Samsung Galaxy S8+
  5. Apple iPhone 7
  6. Apple iPhone 6s Plus
  7. Samsung Galaxy S8
  8. Samsung Galaxy Note8
  9. Apple iPhone 7 Plus
  10. Samsung Galaxy S8 Active

Places 4, 7, 8 and 10 use the same camera.
The Note 8 has an additional one that you could use, so how is it worse than the other Galaxy devices?

Same principle goes for 1, 2 and 3.

And WTF is going on with 5 and 9? So iPhone 7 is way better than 7 Plus. Which is the same thing with an additional camera that you could just ignore and not use if you don't want to?

6S Plus > 7 Plus. Dual-lens on 7 Plus was really inconsistent.

How can they say the iPhone 8 has a better camera than the 8 plus  And how is the 7 so much better than the 7 plus? The plus variants have literally the exact same camera with an extra telephoto lens for Portrait mode, better zoom and better sharpness...
They didn't really test it. Just rolled a dice, make a list, publish and call it a day.

The top rated cameras in smartphones today are separated by so little, the average consumer won't know the difference. Now if the Pixel was 30% better (subjective) than the iPhone X, then it'd be something. But if the regular consumer can't stop a massive difference, much ado about nothing.

Consumer reports...horrible... Unless, of course, it’s a positive review... :)
I'd say this is still horrible, even if I like the results of the iPhone X being on top. How does the 8 beat the 8+? How in the world does the 6S Plus beat the Note 8? Where is the Pixel 2? The rankings make absolutely no sense. Buy yeah, I like that my X is on top, but it's a seemingly very flawed analysis.

I honestly think from what I've seen on YouTube and what not that the Google Pixel 2 takes better pictures than the iPhone X.
BUT, have you seen it for yourself?
[doublepost=1519856418][/doublepost]Well done Apple. They've been incredible with the 8 and X cameras this year. But then, I was very very happy with the quality of the camera in the SE.
There's a saying that the best camera is the one that you have with you and my gosh, it's true. Having one device that does everything, really well is incredible.
I once had a beautiful Nikon DSLR camera with fancy lens with a radio station that I worked with and i'll be honest, I never used it as it was so cumbersome that I felt that i'd get mugged walking around the city with it.
Very exciting times!

It is certainly a good camera. Just a pity it sticks out so far from the case! Annoying.

No, just horrible. This is great for Apple but CR lost credibility with their MacBook pro review and HomePod preview stunt. It doesn't matter if I agree with their assessment or not - their motives and methods are suspect. I don't care if they endorse Apple or not. Besides all the top phones are iPhones which I've owned and used so I already know which look best.

CR is showing two articles. One article reviews 58 smartphones. Overall, the Google Pixel 2 comes in at #16 (iPhone 8, 8+, and X come in at #4, #5, #6).

In a separate article CR lists just the 10 smartphones with the best cameras, with iPhone X, 8, and 8+, listed as #1 #2 #3, and Google Pixel 2 out of the top 10 cameras.

There is a period of 4 months between :)
It's still new tech for a new year. Which they were working on for a good amount of time before release. New tech is always coming out so it should only be improved from last years upgrades.
