Can anybody explain to me why I’m losing 10% to 12% battery per hour when I’m not even using my phone? I go to bed with 100% battery and wake up to only 2% or 3% battery or my phone has gone completely flat, spoken to apple who did a diagnostic check and said everything is ok yet didn’t question why the contacts app has used 64% of battery with only 3 minutes use! I’ve turned off contacts so instead of contacts being in the cloud they are now on my phone but still my battery is draining 10 to 12% per hour ALSO in the picture you can see it says “low signal” for the contacts app any idea what that means or what I have to do to fix it?
I’ve tried……
Force restarting my phone
Resetting network
Resetting all phone settings
Nothing works and apple told me to monitor it for 48 hours and get back to them if it’s not improved well I’ve been monitoring it for the past week since the problem started so I definitely don’t need to monitor it I need to fix it I can’t even rely on my iPhone to wake me up for work

Go into settings, cellular, look for contacts and uncheck. Somehow contacts is trying to sync over a bad cell signal and eating battery, if you have wifi that should be sufficient to sync.

Ok I’ve done that I’ll check what battery it uses while I’m asleep and not using the phone thanks for your help hopefully this will sort it 👌

I'm facing same issue since Tuesday also on my iPhone 11(16.1.1). I wanted to try Whatsapp message-to-self feature, but can't. So I added country code to myself via Contacts, still no luck. But after that my battery consumption increased maybe 5x. Saw contacts use %57 of battery that day.

Wednesday also same excessive consumption continued, called Apple but they provide no solution. At evening, tried backup&restore via iTunes.

Today also same excessive battery usage, but nothing unusual on the battery consumption list, Contacts app not on the list even.

My battery health is %83.

Tomorrow I'm gonna try clean setup.

Only thing that’s worked for me is to turn off contacts access to data in settings and also turn off contacts access to iCloud, with those two setting switched off my phone will lose around 5% battery for the whole time I’m asleep whereas with those two settings switched on my phone either dies by time I wake up or it’ll only have 4% or 5% battery remaining! Something is very seriously wrong with contacts, I’ll leave these two settings to off until the next iOS update then switch back on and see if contacts again eats battery or not.

those are my energy and data consuptions on my iphone and my ipad....from my CONTACTS app..excuse my greek but you can understand from the icons what i mean...i dont know what to do...this is crazy... i dont want to close my contacts sync from icloud ..i just want to work normally...apple help desk said its normal///(wtf??)

Same here, massive battery drain at night. Siri showing 100% battery usage in the battery app until the phone is dead while I’m sleeping. Makes me wonder why these obvious battery bugs persists…many people tend to buy a new phone when their battery doesn’t hold a certain amount of charge. It almost seems intentional, but that’s just me 😀🌸

Same problem here, Contacts app has been using 56% of battery in last 24 hours. If you switch to 'active time' you see that is has only been used for around 2 mins in the last 24 hours, so almost all 56% was idle time.
I've tried the solution above to turn of Contacts app in mobile data and iCloud but doens't work for me. Been having the problem for three days now. Anybody has a working solution or reply from Apple?

I've tried to restore fw via iTunes and use it clean, only installed Whatsapp and Telegram, also signed into iCloud so it grabbed Contacts etc. Same issue appeared again, excessive battery drain, high Contacts battery consumption(%50-70). Issue appeared on 22 Nov.

Maybe try - settings - privacy- contacts and switch the slider off for every app you don’t need to be using your contacts, I don’t know if this has helped me as I’d already turned off contacts data access and iCloud sync though I have since turned data access back on and my battery is fine so I think in my case it’s the sync that is the problem as that is still switched off

i am having this problem too. Apple support is very confused. There is no problem on the same device with different icloud account. Contacts cellular data consumption is terrible. When people turn off cellular data, the problem is fixed. damn interesting.

EXACTLY....ICLOUD ACCOUNT HAVE THE PROBLEM...DONT TURN CELLULAR DATA OFF...IT WILL CONTINUE DRAIN YOUR BATTERY THROUGH WIFI CONNECTION...try to turn of the contacts from your icloud account... settings--name---icloud---show all--contacts--->turn off.... you will see that everything will return to normal.. except the sync of the contacts.... apple mechanics here in Greek department try to work it out...they say that they have never seen something like that before.... when i put my account to another NEW device just to check it made the same problem..so its an icloud issue and not a device issue...

I have this issue too on my ipad pro m1 12.9 WIFI 16.1.1, so it's not isolated to Celullar data. In my case, Contacts didn't even show up in Battery status, I had to trial and error to find the app that's consuming network/battery.

My iphone 13 pro max syncs to the same icloud/apple id without any issues... Very strange.

''My iphone 13 pro max syncs to the same icloud/apple id without any issues''... ARE YOU SURE? TO CHECK IT...CLOSE THE WIFI /...USE ONLY CELULAR DATA...AND THEN CHECK EVERY 5 MINUTES THE DATA THAT CONACTS APP HAVE USED. YOU CANT CHECK THE CONSUPTION OVER THE WIFI NETWORK PER APP...SO..TRY TO DO THIS AND REPLY AGAIN...

OK, seems this fixed it for me:
1. Turned icloud sync for contacts off.
2. And also turned off mobile data for contacts (not sure this is also needed).

THATS NOT A FIX...THAT IS A PAUSE OF THE PROBLEM...TRY TO CALL APPLE HELP DESK AND EXPLAIN THEM...I KNOW MANY PEOPLE WITH THIS KIND OF BUG BUT THEY JUST STOP SYNC CONTACTS TO ICLOUD AND APPLE DOESNT TRY TO RESOLVE IT.....

I just wonder if you guys have high amount of contacts or additional data, like pictures etc? This definitely seems like a bug of some kind.

Only 350ish, and not many with pictures… wonder if it’s got to do with foreign characters…

same man. icloud problem.no problem on my wife's and son's devices. It will take 1-2 years before apple fixes this because it is a problem that very few users come across. If there is a developer here, please report this issue.
