On a related note. I was thinking of making coffee this morning. Someone convince me why I should.

I have never liked laptops for the reasons I thought I would. I commute a lot and fly every now and then too. I am a very "plugged in" type of person. I have NEVER liked laptops for traveling. They're a pain to get through the airport, they're a pain to use in your airplane seat, they're a pain to maneuver on the train without being really annoying to whoever is sitting next to you. When I use my laptop, it's usually at home at the kitchen table, but when I'm home doing heavy computing, I'd rather go downstairs and use my tower anyway.

For this reason, I'm probably going to sell my laptop once I get my iPad. Right now I use my iPhone for movies, books, games, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Soon, my iPad will take over most of those duties. Call it a giant iPod if you will, but most of the stuff I do on my iPhone would be a lot better on a bigger screen. My iPhone will now be more for calls, texts, and if I need a 3G signal for my iPad.

EDIT: Just a footnote--If you couldn't tell, for my life and my usage, I find a laptop to be even more unnecessary than an iPad.

I don't know. You spent all this time getting it and you already have it. Youre gonna lose value. If you want it why not? This is the good parts of capitalism everyone is too bashful to talk to about.

It depends. I am 17, have a new desktop in the house, a decent working laptop, an I got the iPad. I had this dilemma before purchasing but I couldn't bring myself to return it now. I was discussing this with my friend who has the original iPad in their house, and he said he doesn't use it because he doesn't see the point, but it depends if you are going to use it to its full potential. I use mine for air video, forums, genera, browsing, kindle for reading books, newspapers, magazines and games. I hardly use my laptop now! It is just so much more convenient to use the iPad and is battery life is amazing.

I have the Apple wireless keyboard which works a treat for typing out longer things, but this I am typing on the touchscreen at the moment, I have also pre-ordered a case for my iPad which let me stand it up so I can use it as a laptop to type essays, etc. The thing I like about this is its so light and portable and can do so much and the screen doesn't give me a headache or strain my eyes like the laptop, so I can use it for ages unlike the laptop, and the laptop gets uncomfortable on my laps after a while because it's obviously heavier. I still use my laptop and desktop but the iPad is always by my side due to it's portability and battery.

If you are not going to use it to it's potential, or if you need the money then return it. it really depends how much you find yourself needing to use the Internet. For simple tasks such as essays the iPad is fine IMO, you can browse the net, type essays, etc. How about you see if you can live with the iPad and then cancel the laptop?

But at the end of the day, only you can answer this question, and if you feel like you will not use it, then return it, as others have said, you an always buy it at a later stage. But I cannot imagine living without my iPad now, it will always be a must have for me. :D

I am guessing you are "young", so I just thought I would recommend the nylon cases at Maroo.com, they have funky designs :D, I have ordered a grafiti one, there is a thread on the cases in the iPad accessories thread.

If you download movies/tv then get air video, you can stream music, etc from your computer, well if you have a proper commuter in the house.

Trust me, I used to say the iPad is a waste of money and overpriced, etc, and when others were saying they were going to buy it, I used to tell them it is rubbish, but now I am the first one of those people to get it and I am sure they will follow suit. The great thing about it is that it IS a big iPod touch! The kindle app is also fantastic, the brightness can be decreased to a very low level in the kindle app itself so you don't strain your eyes.
How long have you had it for? I doubted my purchase in my first few days as well (please ignore the terrible grammar), but now I don't know why I ever did. I admit it is expensive, but its so worth it.

Well, regardless, you still need a computer for your iPad.

I don't know what kind of laptop you have but I don't find my MacBook Air (original version, 13") to be cumbersome. I have previously owned a MacBook Pro 15" and a PowerBook G4 15" and definitely find those things HEAVY and cumbersome to lug around. But with my MacBook Air, nope I don't feel that at all.

I really use my iPad as a digital reading and movie device which I use while "ahem" on the "throne" or eating at my breakfast table or while at leisure. My MacBook Air I use at home and in the library to work on my dissertation. I cannot imagine using my iPad to write my dissertation.

And finally, in bed, I use either my iPad or iPod touch. I find the iPod touch to be less cumbersome when I'm lying in bed though. The iPad is a bit heavy for that and besides, I often fall asleep with my i-Device in hand which then sometimes fall on the carpeted floor (no damage, because we have very plush carpet) :)

I don't know. It's cool and all. But having a computer, getting a laptop in a month, and having an Android phone makes it seem like I don't really need it. My sister was asking me why I would get one if I'm getting a laptop and I saw her point.

Why should I keep it? What will the iPad 2 be capable of and all?

Not trying to be mean, but if you need complete strangers to decide for you then you probably aren't old enough to have one. Really man??? Who cares?

Take it back clearly you made a mistake buying it.

And these posts will only annoy people. Ipad does not replace a Laptop but means you won't sit on it all day. I use my PC less. Ipad for web browsing is better than any phone. :D

Just to be clear though 99% of people love Ipad. I could never be without one now and everybody I know loves it.

Give it to me. I'll make sure to give that thing a good workout. You can check in on it every now and then, make sure it's doing alright. Let me know what you think.

I have a 27" desktop, a 13" laptop, an iPad and an iPhone.

I use the iPad primarily for reading, it's a GREAT RSS reader ect. and has some awesome apps for that. It's also great for viewing media, pictures, youtube, ect.

It has some great games on it, and it's ridiculously portable and can be used when your walking/standing ect.

My laptop is more for portable work. if i'm about and need to get work done, it's on my laptop. if I'm home and need to get work done, it's on my desktop (unless I want to be in a different room, then I grab the laptop).

The iPad is basically a great device for consuming media, and fooling around with.

The note taker app is great, especially if you have a stylus, and overall it's an excellent device.

It's in between a phone and a laptop, so it's probably the least necessary item I own, but I love using it.

Ipad2, 17inch MacBook pro, IBM think pad, toshiba laptop, 5 iPods atv2 and still could use more toys....

ditto!

i just don't understand it..

I think the OP is just trying to get other people's opinions. Perhaps s/he asked the question in he wrong way but I think s/he was just trying to get us to post what we use our iPads for, whether we love them, etc, helping them to decide. I'm sure there are many people out there who would ask others for help about whether they should buy or return something but they may not necessarily post them in the way the OP has and they probably don't post on the forums but ask friends & family. This is what forums are for -discussion, and if you think the thread is silly, steer clear of itz.

I know I sound like I am havin a go but people shouldn't be put down when asking for help even in 'trivial' situations like this
