I really didn't think it was going to be as big of a deal as people were making it out to be, but my brother has the 4 (I'm still waiting for the white) and the screen is incredible. It is hard to look at my 3GS the same way anymore...

I can't get enough of the screen either. I'm looking at my old iPod touch and I just can't use it anymore. :p Everything looks so blurry.

My old iPod touch is collecting dust on a shelf!

Actually, my shiny new iPad has lost some of its luster, as well. :(

If you don't mind saying, which phone was that? I was searching to find out more about the timeline of pixel density vs cost and haven't found anything interesting yet.

Pretty much all the NTT DoCoMo 905i (Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi... pretty much all had 3xx dpi screens) series and the SoftBank 9xx series (904/910/etc).

I had a SH905i and a SH906i at that time.

I'm sorry, but even if Sharp were the 1st to have a 326ppi display, not only did they not make it popular, but their screen is not a 3.5" screen; it really is more impressive and it'll only be more impressive if we reach those densities on larger screens.

True- but in 2007 and 2008 3.X inch screens were rare outside of smartphones. The 931SH, released in 2008, had a 3.8" HXGA screen. Was pretty large at the time ;)

What's funny is that, despite having had so many superior (specification wise, that is) handsets available for so long, Japanese people are flocking to the iPhone in droves. I guess specs aren't everything.

Seriously... Everything is just so much more beautiful with this screen.

I'm amazed that Apple finally has the best display on the mobile market right now, for a few years they were behind.

iPhone 4 = true beauty.
Terrific display, overshadowed by Apples decision to push out a bug ridden phone. Further exacerbated by the controversy fueled by a rogue CEO.

I think the i4 screen lowers eye strain. I used to get blurry eyed using the 3GS for any length of time.

Best display? World of difference? Beyond amazing? Raised the bar?
Not to piss on your party or anything but my 3 year old phone had an Mobile ASV (AQUOS tech, 170 degree viewing angle) screen with 326ppi. Nothing special.

I suppose y'all think FaceTime is the first video calling technology too?

Cool, what does that have to do with the price of eggs in Shanghai?

No one cares about your "3 year old" phone on an iPhone forum, just saying. Also that 3 year old phone obviously didn't get too much attention back in the day for me or anyone else to have even heard about the 326ppi you claimed it has. Cool it had a great screen...probably the only thing it had going for it. It's a little different when arguably the world's best smartphone gets an orgasmic screen.

Happy 4th of July.

I'm into HD tv, blu Ray movies, just bought a 55" LG LED (1080p/240hz) which is incredible when fed a well recorded blu Ray like Avatar, and looking at the screen on the iPhone is still, really a treat. My laptop has full 1080P resolution and photos on the IP4 are even a little crisper and natural looking. I also appreciate the colors are neutral, not over saturated.

I honestly don't see how any reasonable person can spend a little time with the 4 and say the screen isn't just plain awesome.

+1

Hard to look at my wife's 3G or my iPad for that matter. Like night and day. Love this new phone.

Yeah, that's what I've found too, I'm having trouble being satisfied looking at the screen on my 3gs now, whereas before the 4, I thought the 3gs had a pretty decent screen. :)

It's much like how after watching movies on blu ray for a while, it's hard to go backwards and tolerate regular cable or even a DVD. :)

Couldn't agree more! The display on the iPhone 4 is absolutely beautiful! I thought the iPad screen looked good. Now I find it ugly after looking at the iPhones retina display. Amazing! Loving my iPhone 4. :)

Agreed, the iPhone 4 spoiled me... Hard to look at theipad screen now, even though it's a very good screen.

[see attached] F-06B is currently the best selling phone in Japan. I guess Full HD video recording in a waterproof phone seems better to some people. Probably b/c there are more subscribers to NTT docomo. And possibly because there's Flash support :p

Flash support... does that count as something going for it? CCD sensor with optical zoom? Does that count?

Don't like what I think/say, don't reply. Simple as that.

No doubt Japan has some pretty awesome competitors (let's not get into their internet performance, it makes my blood boil being in this crappy 3G network).

It's hard to tell (just looking at the font rendering and the window design) that it's a HXGA screen.

That attachment says it all. The iPhone 3GS is still in 3rd place for sales despite being over a year old ... :D

Anyway, Japan is a great place to find phones with better specs than the iPhone, to be sure. Yet for some reason I still see dozens of iPhones on the train every day here in Tokyo.

I think the whole phone is the best iPhone ever and the display makes it perfect.

Even though it's a small screen, I rented an HD movie right on the phone and was amazed at how clear things were over the SD copy that I already own.

Go ahead, rent an HD movie on this phone and be amazed on that small screen or at least, sync up a few HD movies or shows. :)

The screen is amazing and no other phone in the US/CA/UK market has anything like it. The compulsion some people have to crap on this phone in every thread possible (and everyone who doesn't crap on it is a fanboysazzxdfss!#!) is freaking breathtaking. True misery.

I have to agree. I had anti-gare film on mine so it didnt really look that great but i switched to a clear film and wow...what. a. display. Bright vivid, great viewing angles and sunlit legibility. Reading txts is no longer a chore too.

Believe me, images and text look far better IRL. I've had both the 931SH and 941SH. The only problem is, the ratio is really weird, making it no good for movies :p

More advertising=more sales. NTT docomo was (is?) advertising the XPERIA X10 (SO-01B) like crazy- far more than any other phone in their lineup. See which place it's in? ;)

It'll probably drop like a stone after another PRO series phone comes out. Until then, it'll probably stay in second or third, as most business users use docomo.

I've always used anti-glare screen protectors. Now using the iPhone 4, I may take the screen protector off my iPad. It looks terrible with it on. At least naked it will narrow the gap.

I also had to go find higher res album art for a lot of my music after I got the iPhone 4. The display is stunning.

Regardless, the push for higher density displays is only a plus for us. I personally believe the iPhone 4 makes the best use of it, despite them not having the absolute highest resolution. Let me know when the next big Japanese phone comes out and we can tango over their display and see if they actually make good use of it and not use overly huge fonts.

You know what they say, misery loves company.

The retina display is great, and unexpectedly the best thing about the new iPhone. I was excited about the battery life, multitasking and the new design, but the screen is far and away the most impressive thing whenever I use it.

Poop on Apple all you want, but without their competition there wouldn't be as many cool smartphones to even compare the iPhone to. I'd still be using my old Moto flip phone.
