Regardless, the push for higher density displays is only a plus for us. I personally believe the iPhone 4 makes the best use of it, despite them not having the absolute highest resolution. Let me know when the next big Japanese phone comes out and we can tango over their display and see if they actually make good use of it and not use overly huge fonts.

You know you can actually set the font size?

None of the 12 or so Japanese phones I've owned over the years had accessibility options even remotely close to what the iPhone 4 has.

Just got my iPhone yesterday and the main reason why I upgraded to the iPhone 4 was for the Retina Display. If it did not have it, I would have kept my 3Gs.

WOW! wow woW wOW WOW! It is so sharp and makes viewing web pages so much easier. I can't wait to have a 24"+ monitor with the same ppi as the iPhone 4.

Did I mention.... WOW!

He was wondering why the font sizes were so big, not whether there were any accessibility options.

My 940SH has 'Small', 'Standard', 'Large' and 'Huge' font sizes, which can be set for the entire phone (General), 'Messaging', 'Browser', 'PC Site Browser' and the 'Direct Browser'. I can also set the font weight- 'Thin', 'Normal' and 'Bold'.

My P-01B can, on top of that, set the font and download more from i-mode.

When I heard the specs on the retina display at the keynote, I was impressed...when I saw an actual screenshot off the phone and could SEE how crisp and sharp the text was, I knew I had to get it (I mean, I was planning to anyway, but the RD just sealed the deal for me.)

I was extremely happy with my iPad when it came out, and I still use it a lot of the time, but now after using the retina display on the iPhone, the iPad's text looks blurry in comparison, unless I zoom in close to the text.

I don't read books on the iPhone, because the text is still much smaller (I use the iPad for e-books), but it's certainly clear and sharp.

As Steve said during the keynote, "Once you use a retina display, you can't go back", and he's absolutely right.

'Browser', 'PC Site Browser' and the 'Direct Browser'
Browser. PC Site Browser (what exactly constitutes a "PC Site," anyway?). Direct Browser. Convoluted much? :p

This actually made me laugh, and reminded me why I was so eager to get the iPhone 3G on launch day two years ago. You gotta love Japanese cell phone hardware, but a brain damaged monkey could develop a better, more intuitive UI. Of course, some people obviously care more about specs and less about usability, but it seems that most people don't (hence the iPhone's global success contrasted with Japanese cell phone makers' inability to sell outside of Japan) ... PC Site Browser. Browser. Direct Browser. ****ing classic.

Anyway, back on topic:

I agree 100%! It kind of sucks, really - I thought my iPad's display was great, until I got my iPhone 4 anyway ...

My thoughts when looking at this screen...

LCD design has reached its peak. Apple, you can check off that feature now. You're done. You've nailed it. There's really no farther to go on this feature, unless you're ready to do a hologram or something. Heck, it doesn't even look like an LCD anymore. The technology behind it has disappeared from view. It's just a glossy window into the internet, my photographs, and a lot of wonderful apps.

Now all they gotta do is blow it up to iPad size.

Seriously... Everything is just so much more beautiful with this screen.

I'm amazed that Apple finally has the best display on the mobile market right now, for a few years they were behind.

iPhone 4 = true beauty.

It's not the best screen - my phone has a higher pixel density.

At least I don't drop calls with my keitai.

Neither do I.

Being almost 50, I couldn't really have cared less about the great "retinal display" given it's definition. Hell, a pixel could be a 1/4 inch wide and I couldn't tell one from another. Then I saw the latest update of MLB At Bat on the new phone and the difference really was stunning. Where the scores and stats were little more than whitish blobs at the top of the screen and action was occasionally hard to follow because of the 2 pixel sized ball, the scores and stats are now crystal clear and the action is considerably easier to follow. It's almost like watching the game on my HD TV if I have my glasses with me. Of course, the AT&T Fuze had a high density screen a couple of years ago but it didn't have everything else behind it that makes it what it is on the iPhone. It, and MLB at Bat, are why I didn't return the iPhone 4 despite the antenna flaw and Apple's lying about it.
