But if the hardware will support the feature, which my installation of this script has proven it will what would be the justification for not supporting it?....

...Why has Apple chosen to purposely cut 2011 MBAs out of the herd, when the hardware clearly supports the feature? ...

....Poor form, Apple.

My attempt has proven that it does not work in every Mid-2011 MBA. Yes , the hardware is there but the script does not produce the desired result. So, clearly, the hardware may not support the feature in every 2011 MBA. Never mind, the same people who complain about the lack of the feature would complain about erratic behavior or even worse, data loss.

The only thing I did not do was delete my bluetooth pairings. I will give that a try, thanks!

If that doesn't work, try creating a new login account from your Mac with full administrative rights, sign into icloud from there, reboot, let it settle for an hour or so, then see if it will come up from there.

Supporting old devices vs. upgrading old devices to new features are different things. Apple does a great job supporting old devices with bug fixes and security updates.

Why should you expect every old device you own to get all the new features? It doesn't work like that anywhere else. Google only promises 18 months of updates on Android devices.

What a load of boolocks, what world do you live on! apps, computers, servers all have updates year after year, why is Apple any different? Server 2012, Linux, W3techs all go on year after year!
My point was Apple do their best to limit any new feature to only new devices despite being to able to run on devices several years old! How many times have we seen consumers finding workarounds easily to enable devices Apple deem "too old"..FFS some people

Could it be that you missed a step, or made a mistake?

Not trying to be an a**, but when I ran it I got a failure message that told me I had to reboot and run it again. Then I had to sign out of iCloud and back in.

Late 2011 Macbook Pro users, take note: this might work without any diddling whatsoever. :roll eyes: Base install, nothing altered or installed.

FYI: Bluetooth is a Broadcom 2070B0 (Bluetooth v3.0), Wifi is Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0.

Have a look under "General" in Pref Panes, I'll bet you $20 you don't have Handoff. Some features don't require BT, others (like Handoff) do. This is old news.

Gotcha, I think that it probably will not need it because the original BT+WiFi Card did not need the extra data line. I will have to test it out and report back my findings, but like i said everyone is out of stock sourcing these parts or expecting 1 week+ wait times from china.

UPDATE: looking at the old iFixit tear down of the 2011 iMac there is no extra USB data line as was the case in the MacPro (Pre vader design).

https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/xHCrR5KsLXlXNCXw.huge

Sadly iFixit does not have them listed by years. So hard to decide which is which. But in any case I do not believe that there was ever a Mini PCIE Combo card. So BT was always a separate module, hence many of us being amazed when the BT worked in 2008 Mac Pro with no extra wires run. So dig some more at iFixit, if the machine is using the pictured Mini PCIE card, there is most likely a separate BT module. At which point there must be a cut off point where they stopped running the wires to Mini PCIE card. There are a few posts in iMac section, one guy reported trouble and having to run the wires, which then led to an inability to use BT keyboard as the place he got USB didn't have power when card needed, etc.

So it is GREAT to know a 2008 iMac doesn't need wire, but at some point they switched to needing wire. We will eventually offer kits for all of these, as we get a chance to try them out.

My argument stands and like somebody wrote earlier there is nothing your mac could do when you first bought it that it is incapable of doing now!,you lot are treating this like an update! like iOS 8.01 it is not!,it is a new OS which comes with new features that are not essential for the proper functioning of your macbook!

If you were as confidant about your argument as you pretend to be, you'd have brought up what you were called out on initially instead of relying on someone else's post for your argument to have a leg to stand on. I get that you've sworn an oath to Apple, doesn't change the fact that everybody else's argument that counters yours also still stands.

This is such a horrible chart! 'No' actually means 'Yes - this device works'

(The macbook airs and mac minis mid-2011 WORK with continuity)

i cannot get my mac mini 2011 to enable continuity. please explain how were you able to do this?

Does anyone know if I downloaded the patch and bought this http://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Bluetooth-Micro-Adapter-GBU521/dp/B007GFX0PY/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_1

Could I use hand off?

Don't really want to risk upgrading the wifi card myself in my early 2011 MBP as I plan to sell it or retire it next year when the new intel chips are out and I buy a new one.

99% chance that the answer is "no"

(as noted on first page)

We sell one that will work, but it is much bigger, clunkier, uglier, and more expensive. The reason being that the driver looks for the specific hardware that comes in a Mac. We encapsulate an entire WiFi/BT card along with a power supply in a USB dongle.

And you still need to have a Broadcom WiFi card that works with the fix.

There is no need to pretend to be confident i am confident of my argument and i can bring up and cite anybody i want it is absolutely non of your business!,you can keep moaning and crying all you want about an OS that you didn't pay it still does not change the fact that you still have the machine you bought with something more get over it and pls stop sending me silly replies bye!:D

I have a 2011 macbook air and I was so disappointed by the fact that I couldn't use the feature I was most excited about. Cannot wait to go home and set my baby up.
I got it up and running and man I can now use AirDrop with iOS devices with no problem. I'm very disappointed Apple attempted to play unfair with us (I also have a Mid-2011 MBA) and I don't know if they may block this in further updates.

,

lol it has always worked(phone calls, sms) ,the bit that doesn't work is airdrop ,hotspot and continuity with emails

Thing is, it's the same size as the old Mini!

Like I said in the soldered ram thread, maybe this Mini is an interim release, and the new, thinner Mini will be coming out alongside Broadwell. But until that time comes, it seems like Apple did it just so you'd have to buy your ram from them.

OMG... that is pretty funny. I just automatically assumed it was because THIN!!! I think people need to complain directly to Apple. This has been building for a long time and I think Apple thinks most people don't care about upgradeable computers.

It Just works!

Hi,

New to this forum, but, just wanted to say Thank You Doktordok!

It took a little "fiddling" with the settings on my iPhone 5s and My MacBook Pro (early 2011), but, works like a champ.

Just make sure that you order the correct card (in my case BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX). The activation tool worked flawlessly!

And maybe a little "donation to the cause" would be appreciated?

(Check your inbox Doktordok) ;)

Well, I bought the BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX based on the original article and repo which indicated the card was compatible with my 2010 13" MBP, when in fact the card is mechanically different. At least I discovered the problem before tearing apart my MBP. I guess I will list the card on eBay.

What wireless card would be recommended for a 2010 mac mini? Its not listed on the chart. Thanks!

The GitHub repo has updated the compatibility list.

The 2010 Mac Mini apparently requires a BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX. I bought one which is not compatible with my 2010 13 inch MBP. I'll be listing it on eBay once it is delivered on Monday.
