It does work with all of them, Ive troubleshooted with many many many people and the ones that didnt work ended up being user error at one point or another. Another thing is sometimes after "enable handoff" shows under general you either have to wait for devices to "handshake" or you can sign out of iCloud and reboot a bunch of times to force the "handshake".
Airdrop also works fine with the 2011Mba as well but you either need to make your computer a contact or on the computer change "Allow me to be discovered by" to everyone.
People seem to have a misconception about how handoff/airdrop/continuity works. This isn't a "hack" its simply erasing apples code that says "do not allow these machines to use handoff" nothing more.

I think the "IT" in my sentence is different than the "it" in yours, you're talking about the "patch" (while I'm talking about continuity). Right?

Ok, so I'm a newbie here as far as posting.

I retired my old Mid-2009 MBP and "upgraded" to a refurbished Mid-2012 MBP which I figured would allow me to use Handoff but I do not have the option in System Preferences>General. I checked the Bluetooth version and it's 4.0 but next to Handoff it states "No".

I also read parts of this thread and the activation tool article to see if anyone else was having this issue. So far I'm at a loss as to why I don't have the option.

Would this activation tool work for me and are any other 2012 MBP owners experiencing this limitation?

cant seem to get my 2010 mbp to pair with my iphone 5 or iphone 6. shows up but when i hit connect it says "make sure mbp is tuned on and near by"

i can airdrop to my iphone from my mac though, but cant seem to pair the two. any ideas?

handoff does show in settings on mbp

Ok, after a lengthy call with Apple Care I've decided that I'm going to return this 2012 MBP since for some reason it isn't compatible to use Handoff.

I hope they get more 2014 models in the Refurbished store! Otherwise I suppose I should wait for Black Friday deals.

I can't seem to find any suggested hardware to buy in the linked article to enable continuity features on iMacs. I have a late 2009 iMac 21.5" and would love to enable continuity features on it but don't know what model of bluetooth/wireless card to purchase :( I realise it's a 5 year old machine but it still works as well as it always has, anyone have any suggestions?!?!?!

BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX not recognized

Just installed BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX ran the tool with results incompatible bluetooth detected. Looking through the threads for a solution. Early 2011 MBP. Any suggestions?

Thank yooou!

A quick (and rather huge) thank you to all involved in helping my early 2011 macbook pro use the newest features of Yosemite. I have also ordered the same bluetooth card for my early 2009 mac mini.

iFixit was also helpful in showing me how to install the bluetooth card I bought from aliexpress.

Careful when ordering stuff from china however - I ordered 5 cards and received one - the dispute function of the site worked well however. Just be prepared to weigh what you have received and post pictures of what arrives in support of your claim if the wrong thing gets posted.

I must say that considering the age of both machines, maxing out the ram and putting SSDs in them, they are quicker than many machines half their age. I am so glad the net exists so I could learn to do these upgrades myself, I can't afford to continually upgrade apple hardware.

Thanks to all here - this is fast becoming my favourite place to be :)

That's such B.S. My Mid 2011 MBA came out 3 years ago. I bought it exactly 2 years ago and it was relatively fresh when I got it. It also has bluetooth 4.0 LE in it. Can you please explain to me why you think it shouldn't support handoff?

This is from my early 2011, if you have a mid 2011 it does have BT LE, so there is exactly ONE generation of MBPs with BT LE that doesn't support handoff. Get off your Entitlement Horse.

What is 3 and a half years for a computer??? A Mac is not an iPhone getting replaced every 2 years.

My Mac Cube was in use for 6 years, same with my white MacBook which I used for seven years. I expect my new MacBook Pro to last me at least 6 to 7 years.

and it WILL last you that long. But you expect your computer to magically get a BT LE upgrade?

I used this activation tool and after that I got airdrop working, I am also able to send/receive calls from/on my Macbook Air Mid 2011, same for sms, but I am not able to use handoff (I open safari, notes, reminders or mail on my phone and it doesnt appear on the left side of my macbook's dock) and I am not able to use Instant Homespot either..

Apart from this, I'm experiencing something a little weird. When I try to transfer a file using AirDrop, it works like a charm in one direction (Mac to iOS) but it does not work the other way around. I don't see my Mac from my iPhone.

Any clue of why is this happening? Is everyone else experiencing the same problem as me?

Thanks!

To let you know, I tried this on a macbook pro 15 mid 2009, which is in the list in the topic start.

It does not work, because:
1. the wificard is physically too big, doesn't fit in the screen section where the wifi card is located
2. it's a different connector
3. this model has a separate bluetooth and wifi device, so replacing the wifi card does not change the bluetooth at all.

Maybe the topic starter, should remove this model from the list? This also means I have a wifi/bluetooth card for sale, please pm me if you're interested and live in or close by the netherlands.

Do I still run the latest CAT if mine already activated using the older version?

OS 8.1.1 Update?

Hi,
I've been using this tool successfully ( and donating via Paypal) for a while now. Have had to reinstall, predictably, after the last two 10.10 updates. Anyone know if updating iOS 8.1 to 8.1.1 will kill the Continuity/Hand-Off functionality again between my mid-2011 MBA & iPhone 6?
Thanks

Hello, I have been using this tool successfully on my mid 2011 Macbook Air with my iPhone 5S since it became available, anyone any idea if it will continue to work if I update to OS X 10.1.1 ?

many thanks

Same hardware, same issue. A uninstall and reinstall of CAT resolved in instant hotspot issue.

Still can't work out the app handoff feature but can live with that. The one issue I would love to sort out if the one way Airdrop functionality. Its really strange as the Phone (5S) is seen by the mac and be sent files, but the phone won't see or send to the mac.

Happy to test pilot any changes.

Ha! If you truly think it's ok for people who bought an MBA as late as the beginning of 2013 to be arbitrarily barred from a new feature which their machines fully support, then I don't know what to tell ya. I think it's a very reasonable expectation for a $1,200+ computer to perform to its full capacity for a few years. In fact, it's one of the Apple brand computers selling points, so let's not act like people are asking for charity over here. In any case, I used the activation tool on my 2011 MBA and handoff works like a charm.

If I understand it right, when you updated your system, this tool stopped working and you had to re-patch, right? I was hoping this little think would survive across updates, but it looks like it doesn't... bummer...

Good news though, you got it back up and running :) I may jump the gun too :)

So since you bought a 2011 computer in 2013 you should get all the 2013 features? It was one "generation" mid 2011 that was barred.

The feature can be supported by the hardware. I have it enabled through an easy software hack (which un-blacklists your device) and it works. You call it MBA 2011 but in reality, unless you bought it right when it launched, everybody who bought an Air before June 2013 has it - it was the latest and only MBA on the market until not too long ago. Imagine if you buy the latest, 2013 MBA in the next couple of months and the next OS X comes out with cool new features which its hardware can support. Now, imagine apple excluding your months old device from using these features for no good reason, only allowing the mid 2015 MBA to run them. Would you not be frustrated?

After installing the 4ACX BT card, I have no wireless...

it shows that the hardware is not there. system info shows that the bluetooth card is there but no wifi. I have swapped back to the original card and it is working again. Bad card or do I need to reset something so that it sees the new card, I assume this is because the MAC changed?
Thanks

Cannot logon to WiFi networks after upgrade

Hello, on my 15" MBP mid 2010 I've installed the BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX adapter. After running the CATtool it show the BT and WiFi available. It also shows available WiFi networks, but when I try to logon to my preferred network it takes some time and then it reports 'Timeout'. With my iPhone I can connect to that network. Already reset the WiFi router, but still no luck. Also tried the manual procedure. At point 27 when you execute the sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel you should get 2 lines with .....signature -67061 ...... But only one line shows up. Tried the procedure again but got the same result. Advice on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.
