I currently have an ATT Tilt that my dad wants and is willing to buy me an iphone to get mine. However, im not quite sure i want an iphone.

Currently I can:
email, messaging, internet(3G so i can quickly browse at school), etc.
watch tv on the go
stream radio/xm radio
two navigation systems (telenav and tomtom)
GPS
3MP video
microsoft office mobile
a more detailed weather system(radars, text forecasts, etc)
and a nice large keyboard.

Convince me to give this up for the average phone features I would find on an iPhone. I see them as nothing more than a normal phone, i certainly wouldnt class them as 'smartphones.'
wow, you are gonna dump a lot of features if you switch to the iphone. i say keep the tilt. more features than the iphone. wait until the SDK comes out next month, then make your decision. the iphone is cool, but the features are seriously lacking

It's Steve Jobs place to convince you to buy an iPhone. I love mine. My wife loves hers and the kids love theirs. If you don't like it, or want to go with something else, then have at it. After all, it's primary function is to be a cell phone and you can get a free one to do that. The Tilt has a lot of nice features. Of course its OS is Microsoft. Some people need to know nothing more.

One word - pinch!

On the seriouse side...I never heard of Tilt, just saw now that it is a Windows device. The most important feature of both of these is that they are platforms.

The iPhone is a smart phone. It is a platform for apps to be delivered, as is WM. That means that the iPhone (and Windows mobile) can and will be expanded over time. You should look at today's features and capabilities but also look down the road to the future. Which device/platform do you see growing? Which has an OS that you enjoy to use? Which has the developer base that you look to to develop apps that you need?

The simple break down would be Windows Mobile is more for corporate users and iPhone for consumers. But each is adding features on the other's side of that fence.

Here is a break down of your feature set today:

email, messaging, internet(3G so i can quickly browse at school), etc.
iPhone: has all these minus the 3G. Mail needs improvements, hopefully coming in 1.5/2.0, which I expect in late Feb with SDK. SMS now has multiple recps in 1.3. Safari is excellent. I find EDGE ok in some spots, bad in others. Wifi helps there.

watch tv on the go
Is this some 3G streaming? I'd rather sync exactly what I want to watch. With iPhone you have iTunes stuff and your own content in MPEG4. It's a great media player (maybe the best out there?)

stream radio/xm radio
To each his own but again, I'd rather program my own media content. Radio (even XM) is dead to me.

two navigation systems (telenav and tomtom)
GPS
iPhone: you may win here. 1.3 added Locate function, which is nice. finding stores, restaurants in Maps is great on iPhone. But no turn by turn GPS.

3MP video
iPhone: 2mp stills, a bit lacking. Do you really use this though? 3rd party proof of concept has shown video app on iPhone.

microsoft office mobile
That is a nice feature, if reliable. Again hopefully coming via 3rd party app. You can use some of the web 2.0 online office suites on iPhone though. Files2phone looks cool:
http://www.apple.com/webapps/productivity/files2phonesandmore.html

Zoho Office:
http://www.apple.com/webapps/productivity/zohoofficesuite.html

a more detailed weather system(radars, text forecasts, etc)
There are a bunch of web apps for this.
http://www.apple.com/webapps/weather/

and a nice large keyboard.
iPhone: keyboard that guess what you are saying! And it's only there when you need it. To me that is huge.

You should wait until the SDK comes out, which I'm hoping also brings us another big update to 1.5/2.0. I think the iPhone is going to continue to amaze. YMMV.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A93 Safari/419.3)

Moving away from Windows Mobile should be much enough of an argument...
Be prepared for a strong fast stable usable interface.
you il never wanna come back

I think his phone is what I have. I'd like put in my 0.01 about it.

Before everyone calls me a troll or I'm assumes me to be evil incarnate, I'd love to have an iPhone. I'm simply waiting for 3G connection speed that I think is essential to productivity. (Is Apple listening?) I'll buy it the day it comes out now that Apple is allowing 3rd party software.

iPod function:
The ability to watch movies is not exclusive to Apple. Our phone has a Mini SD slot. I can rip movies (from a DVD -- Take that iTunes; yes I have handbrake for my iPod) and play it on my phone. No issues. There is less space given my 2GB card although larger cards are probably out there. You can import MP3s as well. It'll play them fine.

Internet works fine, will load web pages, you have to scroll more manually. There is no cool zoom. I think trying a pinch would cause the OS to crash.

E-mail works OK, not as pretty.

iPhone has no excel, word etc. You'd sacrifice this for a couple of months while people write software. This should all be available soon.

But, then you look at the iPhone. The movie actually looks good when it plays. No other phone plays TV/Movies nearly as good as an iPhone. The interface to play music actually works well. Windows media player is HORRIBLE. The internet is not this revolution that Jobs talks about (as many other phones do have the "real internet", but it is the most beautiful interface for a small screen. The packaging and battery life are much better.

Finally, you'd be able to forever get rid of Windows Mobile. Arguably the worse OS ever made (except, perhaps, DOS 3.1). It crashes constantly. The load times can be forever. It locks, you have to quit applications to play movies and sometimes even to play music. I've called my provider with these bugs and they say you need to do a hard reset frequently, one techie said he resets his daily to maintain optimal function. WHAT KIND OF OS NEEDS THIS? I don't know of any Apple product that requires a regular hard reset.

In your situation where you'll always have Wi-Fi to connect to the internet, you should get an iPhone. If I were on a college campus all day and had reliable Wi-Fi, I'd have already switched.

Or, don't, just realize your phone is as horrible as mine.

This ISN'T the phone you're looking for.

You can go about your business.

Buy the tilt.

Move along

the iPhone is fun...

I just picked one up two days ago. I was holding out until it supported 3G and GPS, but my Tilt was just killed in a tragic snowboarding accident.

So, I picked up an iPhone. I like it. It's fun. I like the simplicity.

It's small. Lite. Functional. Good audio quality.

Yes, it has it's limits. No instant messaging. (Yes, I'm aware of Meebo. I don't like giving my password out to a 3rd party) No GPS. The new Locate me thing is cute, but there is no way it's ever going to give you turn-by-turn directions. Still no 3rd party support, and we don't know what it's going to cost when it does come.

and the big one for me... I can't type worth a crap. I'm sure it will get better, but the Tilt spanks the iPhone when it comes to the keyboard.

So. if your current phone does what you need. Save the money. It's $400. That's a lot of f-in money. I am able to write it off on my taxes, so what the hell. It's only $100 more than the tilt.

Use the iPhone for a month or 2 then see how you feel about using a real kb versus the one on the iPhone.

Like I said. I'm sure I'll get accustomed to it. I'm 6' tall, and as such I have good size hands. I can't seem to get my thumbs on the correct keys. It's going to take some relearning and muscle memory to get going fast again.

ill take a real keyboard vs the iphone version due to the fact that i can focus on one thing while texting. with the iphone, you have to pay attention to make sure you dont mess up. thats a pain in the asss in my book

The amount of fanboyism in this thread is alarming.

First of all, I own an iPhone.

Feature wise the iPhone lacks. My Treo could do everything that the iphone can and more (3g), plus I paid for unlim text, unlim nights and weekends at 6pm, 500 mins, unlim data (3g) unlim photo/video msg, for .. 20 bucks a month.

My treo had direct access to the youtube collection through kinoma (a good media player).

I also used the push e-mail from the treo.

Bottom line, the iphone isn't going to beat the treo, nor surpass the speeds of 3g. The iphone does not compete on features with other smartphones like the tilt.

It is overpriced and the att plans are way too much, but that's not the reason most of us got it. The reason we bought the iPhone because it's sexy, it's fun to use, and very enjoyable.

That's the bottomline. The fanboys need to stop parading around claiming the iPhone can compete with high-end smartphones, because it can't.

Hopefully when the SDK comes out, we'll see some improvements, but for now, it isn't there.

Go to the Apple store and use one for a while.

I had no plans on buying one back on June 29 and I didn't....

Till I saw someone with one who got his on June 29. I still waited one week to get mine to really decide and also to see if there were any huge bugs with the thing. Once I saw one in person, I knew there was no question I would buy one.

hmmm...you forgot to mention that the sound sucks on the treo...had to buy an app to increase it. you forgot to mention that the Treo constantly locks up and has to be reset because the apps to work together, that customer support was non-existant, that there is now a class-action against palm for failing to take care of repair the Treo, that the web browser was slower loading then dial up and then you couldn't see anything, that i didnt use half of the apps because they either didnt work or couldnt find them....I can go on but won't since I threw mine in the trash! I am far from being any fanboy as I will never give up my PC but the iPhone will always be a part of me now because of what it does and has the capability to offer. The Treo could never keep up with what the iPhone can and will be able to do.

Enjoy your Treo and I'll keep my iPhone any day of the week!

I too once had a Treo along with a two year contract with Sprint to go along with that phone. But to me it was just another phone. I didn't care about half the stuff it could so and the things that it could do, I was not happy with. The included email program at the time was garbage, it would not stop downloading the same email over and over till my box was filled with hundreds of copies of the same email. Then there was the music playing app, I think it was real player. Horrible horrible player not to mention that I had to take it out of my pocket, unlock it to change songs or playlists.

Then my contract with Sprint ended in June so I only had a few weeks to wait to get the iPhone and I happily did so! I have not been disapointed. Finally a phone that I use practically all of it's features and it's made for me. I don't need no SD card to store music on and it actually has a browser that I can use and even on edge, it kicks the old Treo to the curb along with Sprints crappy internet service. It was so slow that I would give up on viewing a page half the time. I have never had that problem with AT&Ts edge, it's always fast.

Give me an iPhone over a crappy Treo anyday. Been there done that and in the end the iPhone wins.

I'm telling you I was in the park pulled out my iphone and some hot chicks walked over. It works, chicks dig the iphones.

You should not have an iPhone. From your post, it's clear that you are setting yourself to hate it. Life's too short, and you like the phone you have. I strongly recommend that you drop the iPhone and go on to the next problem.

I used the Tilt for 2 weeks, it is an impressive phone but it does become rather non-responsive because of the stock ATT ROM in it. It isn't as snappy as compared to other normal mobile phones, taking almost half a second to respond to rotate the screen and open context menus.

The Tilt also looks very good but IMO, it feels too geeky for me.

The iPhone has much better design and after 2 weeks with the Tilt, I have decided that I am going to get the iPhone as soon as they release the simcard unlocks for 1.1.3.

So,
Tilt for functionality
iPhone for looks and style.

that pretty much sums it up.

Well for the people that want a Tilt I am making a killing on you through eBay. I know the iPhone is a personal preference, but man they are paying 460+ on ebay for a tilt. Craziness. I got three tilts for 150 a piece and sold for 400+ each one.

What's a Tilt? I'd like to buy and sell some of those so I can make more money for the next gen iPhone and give this one to my wife.

Anyway, directed to the original post, it already sounds like you already have your mind set that the iPhone isn't worth it. I had the same frame of my mind when it first came out. I wanted to wait to see what the next gen had to offer. Anyway, my wife got me the iPhone for Christmas. This thing is awesome. I'm glad I have it.

Like another person posted, you can only decide if the iphone is right for you. Granted, there are pros and cons of every phone, no phone is perfect. Is the iphone worth the price, plus month bill, and worth a 2 year contract with AT&T, in your opinion? In my opinion, it sure is, worth every penny (but then again I have never had an apple product that I haven't liked. Probably slight bias, but take it for what it's worth).

It's not about what others think or feel about the iphone, because to each their own. Will you be satisfied with a phone that is capable of music, video, internet and is a "unique" piece of art? I'm not trying to be negative, or say that you won't like it, but nobody can fully answer your question. Test it out at an apple store, if you like it, write down (or mentally remember) what you like about it. Then go out and test whatever phone you're looking at and see what you like about it. Hands-on is always better than reading about it online.

Remember, there is always going to be people that don't like something that you are looking to get. Take video games for example, there is never a universal though (there is a majority thought), meaning that 8/10 people say the game is amazing, while the other 2 people hate it. Would you not buy the game cause those 2 people don't like it? You wouldn't know till you played it and decided for yourself.

I'll end this in saying, nothing and nobody is ever perfect, but it can be the right thing for you, personally.

You're right. Treo was not meant for the mass consumer market, it was meant for people who appreciated technology like me.

It wasn't a "hey look at this product, it's perfectly fine from day 1" type of product. You had to know how to work it right, and once you found out how with your custom apps, you would be fine.

Need I mention, I have not had a single lockout or phone deletion like others have posted? Maybe it's because I know how to use a phone to the fullest extent.
