Color me weird, but if I wanted to fully see my wallpaper I would just bring it up in my pictures.

I don't understand people and their desire for wallpapers or how it is a big deal.

I would say I can see any significant part of my two monitors desktops like maybe .0001% of the time. I have some zebra on there. I don't care.

I certainly can't relate to someone who would condense all their apps into 4 folders and squash them down to the bottom just so they could look at a picture all day.

This. Organization is one thing, but cramming is an entirely different horse.

People want folders. That is a "want" that Apple is striving to meet in this instance even though it's my position that someone who is using their iPhone in the most time-saving and efficient way wouldn't need them.

People use their devices differently. What is time-saving and efficient to you is not necessarily the same for everyone else.

It seems cool for themeing, but maybe just for one page. I would rather take advantage of the 2160 available spots for apps. :D
Would anyone like to temporarily sign my UDID so I can test this out too? :D

I know.

In this case I think it is, provided you can remember the name of apps. For example, I know people who will organize, in whatever order they want, the apps that are on the fifth and sixth pages of their iPhone. When they download a new program they mess around with where to put it for a long time: "which page should it go on? is this my general utilities page? maybe it's a most used app, I should put it near the front." This is all easily solved by remembering the name of the app and then typing it into spotlight. You not only save the time it takes to "organize" your apps, but you also save the time it takes it find them.

Clearly people disagree with me, that's alright. It's not important and I don't really want to argue about this for any longer. FWIW, Apple did a good job implementing folders.

Why ANYONE cares about folders or the order of their icons after the first page when we all have spotlight to quickly launch apps is beyond me. Have fun digging through your folders everyone.

Spotlight is not always quicker.

For spotlight you have to swipe right when your on the home screen then type until you see a match then tap that match.

Now lets say you have 12 folders on your home screen, and 16 icons/apps in each folder. That's a 192 icons/apps that you can get to with only 2 taps from the home screen and without swiping/scrolling.

So for the most part having Folders are quicker than Spotlight, especially if your categorize your folders right. ;)

If you can memorize the position of all 192 of your apps within the folders on the first page, then yes, folders would probably be quicker.

I dont think it's meant to look at the wallpaper as much as it's meant to have a clean, neat, and organized look.... different strokes for different folks is basically what it comes down to.

I dont really think the apps are squashed.... one quick tap will expand the folder and you can see them all at once.

It's not that hard.

For example, lets say I make these type of folders. Now it would be very easy to locate an app. And how hard is it to glance at the screen and find an app's position?

I plan on leaving my dock and page 1 exactly like they are now. If something is there it's because I use it a lot. Why would I want to make it harder to get to?
My dock is exactly the same as it has always been (for the very reason you posted) and most of my Page 1 is as well, with the exception of one folder which allows me to bring frequently used stuff from Pages 2 & 3 to the first page, minus the clutter. Page 2 consists of one row of apps and one row of folders, and other than that, nothing - no more six pages of seldom-sued apps to scroll through. I am really enjoying being able to organize my apps easily now! :)

Though I have other folders, i like it like this. I have my most used on page 1 with the phone, todo, and mail apps in dock and an "Apple" folder (stupid name, I know) that has most of the apple apps, Safari, iPod Google Maps, Photos, iTunes, App Store, etc) available for easy access on any page.

Also made a bunch of other folders but not sure how many will stick.
Is it me, or does the folder appear to not have a reflection in the dock? :(

These folders are going to be annoying if you have multiple programs (unimportant ones) that keep giving off notifications..

Thats a good point I didnt think about that, This is not mine I just found it online as I dont have 4.0.... but now that you mention it, that would be cumbersome to have to first click on the folder then click on the app just get to your phone. Does look nice and clean though.

I think you guys are forgetting about the multitasking dock.

The second you get used to switching between apps that are running instead of choosing them off the Home Screen, it will become more likely that you might choose this layout.

Think about it. You launch one app and it is constantly in the quick launch dock until you choose to close it. Therefore each app you are running is just a double tap of the home button and one tap on the screen away. There won't be much searching through folders and such.

I really like this layout and I plan on trying it out when I get iPhone OS 4.0. It looks nice and clean.

Yeah thats the one thing the multi tasking dock is good for right now, it's essentially a tool for quick switching between apps. Eventually when all developers upgrade their apps to run in the background it will be true multi tasking but for now... great way to switch between apps quickly.

You know, when I first heard of the new folders for 4.0 I thought they would use the Mac 'Stacks' way of piling the icons on top of each other to give a icon that previews the apps on the screen. The mini-icons look better than that.

The 12 app limit sucks, I wonder if there will be more allowed on the iPad.

As for needing 2 finger presses to open a app. right now I have to swipe several times and then press to open some of my apps. Folders will help me have more commonly used icons on my first couple of pages now. And at least one folder in the bottom tray.

BTW, can you put folders within folders?
