exactly. nothing more to wait for

I was so tempted to get the blackbook, but an extra £100 to upgrade from 80gb to 120gb and being black wasn't worth it, so go the white 2ghz

I did, I did, the order is in, it ships from macmall (which is giving a $100 rebate, no tax and free ship) tomorrow! :D

I'm quite sure Apple will announce Leopard early. They like to look like overachievers. They showed it with their quick transition to Intel. And you see it with their conservative earnings estimates. I'd put some money on it that they'll announce early availability.

Here's my prediction: At Macworld in January, Apple will announce Leopard will go on sale in February. Stab in the dark, for certain, but that's how I imagine it.

I actually think that there is a very good chance of this happening... I was aiming at getting a MacBook Pro the 2007 edition, but if the new OS comes in Feb, which I think it might, we might also get one of those nice little coupons saying if we bought a Mac between a certain time period, we can get some discount. They have done it before, and if they wanted to role out the macs before to be able to cash in on the new OS then this is what they would do. Otherwise they would preload all their macs with the new OS.

My hope is that they will release the New OS in Feb (which often times offer new products from Apple) and with Leopard, they will also introduce iTV.

Now, iTV I bet is tied in with the new OS and that is one of those features Steve didn't want to share at the last expo. It might be something that makes the iTV unique from all other devices that resemble it.

In any event, iTV (or whatever it will be called) and MacOS X 10.5 will be released on the same day.

MacMini's might see a jump in their specs, but that would only be to make all macs 64bit.

Pure speculation, naturally, but, this is what I see most logical and realistic.

Cause with the latest updates there isn't much room for new products to announce in Jan. Which leaves iTV, MacOS X. 10.5 and a bump in the Minis...

Only time will tell...

For now, I am just waiting to get my MacBook 2Ghz Core2Duo.

And hope for a new MacBook Pro in Jan 2007, though I doubt it...

PS. I'd like to see that chip in the MacBook Pro's that can boot the computer super fast! Forget the name of the chip...

how come i hear that he rpm speeds on the hd are 7200 but the website says 5400? Also does anyone know if the battery life is better?
Last question, does anyone know if this integrated video card will play WC3 Frozen Throne on Bnet?

You can install a 7200 RPM drive yourself. Apple only offers 5400 RPM's as their top speed.

WC3 should run but you'll want 2 GB of RAM since it's via Rosetta.

you're lucky, I have to wait until 22-23 Nov :( I did order via a Higher Education link though :)

as a recent convert, one thing i can say, is that the program list in the start menu of windows is a nice feature...with finder, to get to a program u dont use much, uve gotta open and close the finder window. one work around to this, which is really great, is the spotlight.

No, first thing for all windows switchers to do is open Finder, select the Mac HD, then drag the Applications folder to the right had side of the dock. That effectively becomes the same as you start menu if you right-click, ctrl-click or left-click-hold. If you merely left-click, it opens up that folder.

Works the same for all folders. Just be careful not to drag any alias' there. like a folder alias from the Finder sidebar. If you do, they move rather than creating an alias.

I am almost wondering if Mac OS X 10.5 will be released sooner than expected... perhaps at MacWorld Expo 2007 in Jan. I only wonder because Apple has its entire product line transitioned to feature a 64-bit Intel processor (except Mac Mini). Apple said at WWDC 2006 that Leopard would bring enhansed 64-bit support beyond the UNIX level. So could this mean that Apple is getting ready to release Leopard soon???

so the Leopard will not run FULLY with my 1.66ghz Mac Mini ??

"i have to admit its getting better..."
thanks!
i kno lots about hardware, but im still far behind on lil OS things like this...thanks for the tip!

Nice first post.

What changes would you make to Finder?

What applications were your Mac collegues running (besides Office) in science?

Rocketman

The most important app that we ran was IDL, which is a scientific programming platform similar to Matlab, although the OS X version of it was a step backward from the OS 9 version as far as the IDE went, since its essentially the unix version running under x11 and they haven't bothered to make it look good yet. The other main app that we used was KaleidaGraph, which our group preferred to use over Excel for most things. We also used Audacity for some things, but others usually used Adobe Audition when they needed the full fledged deal. Illustrator was another Adobe product that we used, but more for editing ps graphs, not drawing works of art :)

I'm not sure of the exact changes I would make to Finder; I used it for 16 months and I just guess I couldn't shake the Windows Explorer paradigms and always felt that I could do file management much better in windows (also used a Dell Precision m60 P-M 1.6GHz w/ 2GB RAM at work) and I never bothered to hook up a two button mouse. It's been a year and a half, so I can't really remember specifics. I also finished my term before everybody got upgraded to Tiger, so I never got to use spotlight. Hopefully it works as good as the search in iTunes, which was the main feature that got me to switch from winamp.

Makes the black MacBook look a little better...if you add the 120Gb harddrive on to the high end White MacBook you get 1450, and you can't add a Duel Layer DVD burn, so I'd say it all works out

Plus new hardrive sizes!

wut do u mean u cant add a Dual Layer on the white macbook? aside from the 1.83ghz, all macbooks now, white or black, have the same dual layer drives

Double The L2 Shared Cache From 2MB to 4MB Is A Huge Performance Improvement

cant believe it. the upgrade was well worth the wait for all who did. the blackbook now has same speed C2D, 40gb larger HD, and twice(1gb) the ram.
same speed C2D with TWICE the L2 shared cache up from 2MB to 4MB - big difference in performance right there.

and with this comes the new refurb prices!

Discoloration

Does anyone know if the new white MacBooks will have the discoloration problems like the ones produced six months ago?

Thanks,
Rob

Great - Now I just need to wait for 10.5 to release, since Apple does not give free upgrades even if the machine is purchased close to the release, and then I'll buy. $100 for the upgrade (if that's what it'd be) is nearly 10% of the cost of the MB, so that's significant.

these problems were already solved. if u have a macbook with issues, apple has said they'll replace it, and yea, dont use such a big font. makes it seem like ur begging for attention, or angry

Thanks. I understand that they will replace it. Though, do you know if they have solved the problem? I am hesitant to send my white MacBook in, have it replaced, and the encounter the same problem 3 months from now. Is it possible to have it replaced with a black macbook?

Thanks,
Rob

they wont replace it with a black book, unless u get escalted real high in customer relations. to the best of my knowledge, they've actually fixed the problem.

I have clean hands thanks.

You however must have a problem with your eyesight. The matte black finish picks up oil from normal clean hands and it shows, period. The paint can peel off too - I had 2 new units that were showing this already from small scratches. This is old news.

If you get a scratch on the black MacBook it can puncture the paint. It just isn't a durable finish. I wish this wasn't true but it is. The white MacBooks can also scratch, but there's no finish to rub or peel off. The gloss plastic can be polished with Brasso or suchlike if necessary - this cannot be done on the black.

I must have the same problem with my eyesight because I had a Black MacBook also, and never saw any discoloring or 'oil' spots on the case of my Black MacBook.. Never got a scratch on it, and absolutely no hint of paint peeling off... The day I sold it, the outside casing looked as good - and clean - as the day I bought it...

I won't say I took better care of mine than you do, but I certainly didn't have the same issues you mentioned.

Zap 2 Lives In Bizarro World

Makes the black MacBook look a little better...
Not Really.
if you add the 120Gb harddrive on to the high end White MacBook you get 1450
Which would be an INSANE choice as you give Apple your 80 PLUS $150 for a 120 which is more than the street price of any 120 alone.
and you can't add a Duel Layer DVD burn, so I'd say it all works out.
Only in your Bizarro world.
Plus new hardrive sizes!
All offered at rediculously overpriced upgrades that you can do yourself for way less money while retaining the base drive it comes with as an external. No thanks.
