I Don't Think You MUST Necessarily Install RAM In Sets Of Two

ddr2 has to be installed in sets of 2 not 1. so 1 ddr2 1gb would not work as I understand it. hence 2X 512mb ddr2
Not true. You can install one stick at a time and even mis-match them One 1GB and One 512MB if you like.

However the external monitor support might be effected. Anyone know about that? AV says it's effected not at all.
I'm not a RAM expert but the low-end MBP has a single 1GB ddr2 so-dimm so you can't be correct. Pairing of dimms is for a small performance boost and is not mandatory.

Good updates Apple. I just couldn't see them going into the shopping season without an updated MacBook. I hope those who firmly said this wouldn't happen keep there mouth shut from now on.
possible, not sure...
I should clarify that this isn't an problem with the type of ram, but a restriction caused by the itegrated graphcs card.

the same ram is used in macbook pro and it does not need to be pair there
So are you saying the display won't work at all without two identical sticks in the RAM slots?

A 2GB C2D MB Is One Hell Of A Professional Video Editing Workstation Snide

How much "professional editing" will be done on Macbooks?

In any case, it's simple enough to connect a top-quality monitor (up to 24").
Just guessing - perhaps a lot. A 2GB C2D MacBook is an excellent field Mac for capturing and editing news, HDV, documentaries etc.

same speed C2D with TWICE the L2 shared cache up from 2MB to 4MB - big difference in performance right there.

That's probably the main reason I opted for the 2GHz model. I was initially only planning on going for the low end and upgrading the RAM on my own to 2GB. I have a large file server, so HD space wasn't a big issue, but since Apple also lowered the upgrade prices for the RAM to prices that actually made sense to get them, the incremental cost of getting a 2GHz with Apple upgraded 2GB RAM wasn't much more than getting the 1.83 and buying third party RAM (cheapest I could find was $260 CAD for 2x1GB, even ebay didn't have much cheaper than that). So with the EDU discount, it was essentially $85 CAD to get double the cache, a slightly faster processor, 20 extra GB, the superdrive, Apple installed RAM, and have all my parts arrive together. I didn't count the resale value of selling the 2x512MB pieces because I would've kept them to reinstall them if I wanted to send it back for Applecare.

So by lowering the RAM upgrades, I think Apple is getting back some of the money that they were previously losing to third party manufacturers. From what I've heard, the majority upgrade the RAM on their own. I think the RAM upgrade prices were outrageous before because I don't think it was worth their time when they were selling lower volumes of machines. Now that they've got production up (evidenced by their last quarter results and the new Foxconn plant), they'll have enough RAM upgrade orders to make it worthwhile. Just from me they've made an extra $346 that they wouldn't have received otherwise.

as a recent convert, one thing i can say, is that the program list in the start menu of windows is a nice feature...with finder, to get to a program u dont use much, uve gotta open and close the finder window. one work around to this, which is really great, is the spotlight.

Some of us like to use the mouse as little as possible. Keyboard shortcuts are where it's at.

If you're on the desktop, simply hit Command Shift A which will take you right
to the Applications folder (Command Shift U for Utilities folder). If you aren't
on the desktop, use my all-time favorite shortcut Command Tab to get to the
finder, and then do the Command Shift A (or U). If you like, you can start
typing in the Spotlight window within the finder instead of scrolling to the app you want.

This is way better than any solution I've found in Windows for quickly finding apps,
especially ones which aren't used all that often.

So will the new MacBooks have the funky vents and awesome cooling that the new C2D MBPs have?

Nothing related to external monitor support is affected. The only thing you lose by installing a single module (or two mis-matched modules) is the dual-channel support. In other words, your RAM runs about 10% slower for high-bandwidth transfers when you don't have two matched modules installed. It's not really a big deal - the RAM isn't normally the bottleneck in these systems.

Anyway, Apple did the same thing with this Macbook update as they did with the MBP regarding RAM. They priced the RAM upgrade to 2GB right where it's still a bit overpriced, but makes little sense to buy elsewhere. With current prices, it will cost you $210 to buy 2GB of good RAM somewhere else and then you can try to sell the 2x512MB modules on eBay or wherever. Their current value on eBay is about $15 to $20 each. Or you could just pay the $175 (or less for student and ADC discounts) to have 2GB right off.

If I were buying a Macbook now, I would buy the stock 2GHz white one and upgrade the RAM to 2GB right from Apple. Then I would buy a 120 or 160GB hard drive from a good vendor along with an external USB2/FW enclosure to put the included hard drive in. I like the blackbook, but Apple is still charging too much of a premium for it. If you upgrade the white MB to a 120GB drive through Apple so it matches the blackbook, there's only $50 between the two, but you're paying too much for the HD upgrade.

white vs. black

I wouldn't get the black. I had one, and it looked great fresh from the box, but looked old and tired 30 minutes later with grease marks all over it. Stick with the white as the smooth plastic finish doesn't show marks and is easier to clean.

I have no experience with either color, so I can't comment on the contentious "shows marks" and "easier to clean" issues.

I will point out, though, that the Apple logo on the lid is always white. I think I prefer the all-white case of the whitebook to the black-with-large-white-logo case of the blackbook.

If the logo on the blackbook were black-on-black I might prefer it enough to spend slightly extra for it.

For me it's exactly the other way around :)

if the logo were black, how would it glow the way it does?

macbook keyboard

I would prefer the matte screen but, with my educator discount, I'll save a good chunk of change if I get the MBook and swallow my ego. I have to see how I like the keyboard.

I was expecting to dislike the macbook keyboard, but I tried
one out at the showroom and decided I liked it. It seems most
(but I guess not quite all) of the complaints about the macbook
keyboard have come from those who hadn't tried it yet.

So give it a try and let us know what you think.

With any luck, a Core 2 Duo macMini before MWSF.

Some people see new iPods before MWSF, but I dunno.
As for myself, I'm still waiting for at the very least, Leopard. And a Xeon processor, post-n Airport card, plus built in microwave and floppy disk drive in the iMac....

Come on Apple, give me a reason to get even further into debt! Come on!:p

I've tried teh MacBook Keyboard and I think it stinks to high heaven.

eye candy and Intel GMA 950

I can't afford a MBP and I don't want to spend $1100+ on a machine that will not even support all the eye candy in Tiger/Leopard,

I'd like to hear more about this. What kinds of Tiger/Leopard eye candy won't show on GMA 950?

I hadn't realized that another Quartz vs. Quartz Extreme type of situation had developed.

Prices of Refurbed...

My wife wants to replace her now deceased, beloved iBook G3. She asked me about the prices of the refurbed (we've had good luck with them in the past). I checked and it looks like they dropped the price $100+ on them. I can get her the black one for $1099 or the white Superdrive for $999. Speedwise, does it make sense to pay for the C2D? She surfs, does a little photo editing and some graphic work and word processing.

I noticed they even dropped the prices on the refurbed MBP's. They've got one on there for $1399!

Whattya think?
