Where's Your Proof MB IG Won't Support All Leopard Graphics?

X1400? Myself, I wouldn't be so picky. Apple could put just about any mobile GPU with its own dedicated memory in the MacBook and I would be ecstatic.

I can't afford a MBP and I don't want to spend $1100+ on a machine that will not even support all the eye candy in Tiger/Leopard, much less play games.
How do you know it won't? Do you have a link to a web page that says Leopard will have graphics in it that the MB IG won't be able to display? I seriously doubt Apple would let that happen.

People think that the only benifet for C2D is speed! Wrong! It also should come close to doubling the batter life, because it uses much less power. That alone is huge in regards to a notebook.

hahahahaha, cannot stop laughing. Dude, you can at least type "Merom" in google and do some research before posting.

Don't Buy Core Duo When You Can Have Core 2 Duo Instead

My wife wants to replace her now deceased, beloved iBook G3. She asked me about the prices of the refurbed (we've had good luck with them in the past). I checked and it looks like they dropped the price $100+ on them. I can get her the black one for $1099 or the white Superdrive for $999. Speedwise, does it make sense to pay for the C2D? She surfs, does a little photo editing and some graphic work and word processing.

I noticed they even dropped the prices on the refurbed MBP's. They've got one on there for $1399!

Whattya think?
I think passing on the 4MB L2 Shared Cache in the new 2GHz C2D would be a HUGE mistake. I think buying a 2GHz CD MB or MBP would be a crime against humanity. :p

I must have the same problem with my eyesight because I had a Black MacBook also, and never saw any discoloring or 'oil' spots on the case of my Black MacBook.. Never got a scratch on it, and absolutely no hint of paint peeling off... The day I sold it, the outside casing looked as good - and clean - as the day I bought it...

I won't say I took better care of mine than you do, but I certainly didn't have the same issues you mentioned.

Sometimes I thought I had scratches (on the bottom), but they all magically disappear when you rub them with your fingertip. My few weeks old G2 black iPod Nano looks bad in comparison, the paint just goes off on the sharp edges (top, bottom, around the clickwheel). My Macbook still looks brand new, except there's some finger-dird and dust on it most of the time, none of which won't go off when cleaning it with some diluted dishwaher (for the finger grease, dilute very well!) and a kleenex (soft surface).

And the case is not painted black, it's aluminum with a latex coat you can peel off (just kidding :p ). It's actually a tainted plastic, you can break a piece off, and the edge is black. I've seen a guy trying to return a black Macbook at the store cuz he had a crack on the palmrest (don't ask me how he did that), and believe me, it really is black plastic.

What I like most is the design of the keyboard. It's ultra easy to clean, just rub a damp cloth over it, pressing down the keys. That cleans the keys and the space inbetween at the same time. I love that.

I have no experience with either color, so I can't comment on the contentious "shows marks" and "easier to clean" issues.

I will point out, though, that the Apple logo on the lid is always white. I think I prefer the all-white case of the whitebook to the black-with-large-white-logo case of the blackbook.

If the logo on the blackbook were black-on-black I might prefer it enough to spend slightly extra for it.

I would go for a purple on black. That would be nuts!

Upgrade prices don't reflect reality?

Why are the upgrade prices so high for the MB? For my MBP I only spent $80 upgrading it to a 160GB drive, but for the Macbook just upgrading it from 80GB to 120GB would cost $135 alone!

Hmmm... That can't be right!

In the Apple Education store, something interesting occurs. When upgrading to 1 Gb RAM, the cost should go up by $117. Instead, it decreases by $30.

Kool!!!

So if anyone could explain this to me in any other way than an error by Apple which will cause the 1Gb RAM upgrade to become $147 more expensive within a few hours, I would be grateful.

The Proof...

best sleeve/case?

While waiting for the new MacBooks to show up on Amazon (ETA anyone? Hoping to avoid sales tax and shipping charges), I've been looking for the right case. Maybe you all can help me.

Here's what I want: a sleeve that zips around three sides and lets you open and use the laptop without taking it out of the case, and even gives you access to the AC, USB and other ports, and has a pouch to hold the power cord/brick. Basically, I want a 13" version of the Wetsuit 1.0 that I use on my 12" iBook (which was passed down to me after a long life protecting a PowerBook 500), but maybe with a little more padding. The Brenthaven Edge I looks almost perfect, but there are some reviews on Apple.com saying it doesn't have a pocket for the power cord or remote, and I don't think you can plug the MacBook in or attach USB/FireWire peripherals without taking it out of that case.

Ideas? What cases are you all looking at?

What is so great about the 4MB cache?

Double the cache only resulted in 10% increase of performance, not a big difference that couldn't be explained by other factors.

Buy an iPod nano, take one of the stickers that are in the box (those stickers are very small to fit in the box, sligtly bigger than the Apple on my Macbook), spray it in whatever color you want, and put it on the Macbooks Lid. :)

Start Menu like

as a recent convert, one thing i can say, is that the program list in the start menu of windows is a nice feature...with finder, to get to a program u dont use much, uve gotta open and close the finder window. one work around to this, which is really great, is the spotlight.

Another work around is to drag your applications folder to the dock. Right click on it, and Ta-Da! A very Start menu-ish list of all of your applications.
Works great!

Totally agree. I see no possible way that any of Leopard's eye-candy-licious eye-candy won't work with the GMA950 or whatever it is.

And if it doesn't, who really cares? Leopard will still work. I would expect Leopard to work well (minus eye-candy-liciousness) with my 16mb RAGE128 and 450Mhz CPU. Is the lack of a few funky wave effects really enough to complain about?

Intel mainly needs the big cache because of the frontside-bus bottleneck. Nice to have but not dealbreaking. I would rather have 1 Gig RAM and a Superdrive option on the 1.83 model - thats what really stinks.:(

Apple said at WWDC 2006 that it Leopard would support 32-bit as well as 64-bit.

fact indeed!
but now i'm wondering how much Leopard we (32-bit based) will loose.
32-bit will not be able to hand Coverflow, for example?

You don't even have to right click. Just click and hold. Do the same thing with your Documents folder (drag it to the Dock). Then remove all the applications that you don't use frequently off the Dock. The more you learn about your new machine, the more you will like it better than your old machine.

Pretty much 'as expected' update. If I were to buy, I'd go black+2gb ram and 'maybe' go 160gb hdd if I knew I could get a seagate or hitachi drive. Otherwise, I'd just upgrade the hdd myself.

The new MB is a SWEET deal I think. I'm going to save and wait till next year and go MBP+10.5 though.

Macbook 2GHZ > 17" PB 1GHZ?

I currently have a 17" 1GHZ 2GB RAM Powerbook for Logic, FCP, and the Adobe CS Suite. Considering that it's three and a half years old now, how would it compare with a 2GHZ C2D Macbook with 2GB RAM? Obviously screen size would be an issue I'd have to deal with but I'm wondering if I would see a decent performance jump, or at least something close to what I have now. Thanks!

I don't think we'll see new MacBooks/MacBook Pros with totally redesigned form factors until after Leopard is released. My reasoning for this is simple: Apple will want to include much higher resolution displays, and they won't look good with Tiger. That's because Leopard, 10.5, will have resolution independence built-in, and Apple can resize the GUI to look appropriate with these new high resolution displays.

I doubt that. Highly. Knowing Apple, they just won't do that.

3. I also predicted 160 & 200GB HD offerings. Excellent. But you can buy a 200GB Toshiba PMR Drive for $260 and put it in yourself instead of giving Apple $350 minus the 80 you can put in an external FW case. You can buy the 160 for $180 instead of giving Apple $250. So Apple's HD upgrade pricing is out of whack with the market. :(
Except that where I live, I have to pay about $100 to have somebody put in the new drive.

Edit: Oups, I was thinking of the MBP, for the MB buying your own drive is definitely cheaper.

I bought a black MacBook from an Apple Store 10 days ago, so I still have 4 days in which to return it.

Obviously, I'd like swap it for the newest model. However, I'd prefer not to pay the 10 percent restocking fee.

My question: Have others who have been in this same situation (new owners of an Apple product that was replaced by a better model within the 14-day return period) been charged the restocking fee, or do the Apple Stores generally let it slide?

I have been looking for shortcuts daily and everytime I find a cool thing I can do in Mac OS X. Thanks Madmic. This is amazing.
